    Riverview Campground

    Beautiful Views

Riverview campground is a clean, quiet, family friendly campground. It overlooks the Ohio River and provides amazing views at sunset. The stargazing is also great. There are 30 amp and 50 amp sites with water, and a dump station is on site. Firewood is also provided. This was the perfect place to spend the weekend!

Kaskaskia Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam (formerly the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam

    Hidden gem

This is a very clean campground with electric only hook-up. It had nice big concrete pads, a large picnic table and large fire pit/grill at each site. Water was available close to the restrooms and is accessible to fill campers. Parking area at each site could accommodate two vehicles. The capsites were located next to the Kaskaskia River. There is a recreation area with a large pavilion and fishing is accessible from here. By the camping area there is a hiking trail through the woods that ends at the confluence of the Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers. This trail is paved for walking, bicycles and wheelchairs. There is also a boat ramp close to campsites.

    Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground

    Quiet camping convenient to I-57

Wayne Fitzgerald State Park is on Rend Lake, just off I-57 in Southern Illinois. It’s a great place for camping, fishing and bikes. It’s convenient for a short stop if you are traveling through, or as a destination. Although it’s right off the interstate there is no traffic noise. The campground has 40 tent sites and over 240 modern campsites, which offer electrical hookups, water and sewer facilities. Modern sites are $20/night, with 30/50 amp service. Primitive sites are $6. There is no internet. There are a few pull through sites.. there is lots of room and the sites appear to be level. There are 3 shower buildings. Many sites can be reserved online. There is a playground, and boat ramp. The park has hunting, fishing, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, hiking and boating. there is a golf course nearby and a lodge. Rend Lake is well-known for crappie, particularly in the early spring, as well as largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill.

    Timber Ridge Outpost & Cabins

    Not bad

Paid $35 per night for 2 nights after our Passport America discount. Not sure it would have been worth the full price. Full hookups. 50amp, water (55psi), and sewer. Cell coverage for AT&T and Verizon were both adequate to stream and work. The check-in process was a bit slow. We kinda expected that since it took us a dozen calls just to get someone to pick up the phone to make a reservation. We were first in line at check-in and spent at least 10 minutes going over all sorts of rules and information. Luckily we showed up at 3:05pm because they charge $25 for "early check-in" any time before 3pm. We're full-time RVers and have stayed at nearly 140 campgrounds and that's the first time we've seen something before 3pm called "early" and that's a pretty steep price for check-in. Our entire section of the campground was empty. Our neighbors actually showed up at 2pm and opted to wait an hour in the parking lot to go to their un-occupied site rather than paying $25. But besides the check-in, the campground was beautiful. Plenty of tree cover. The roads are paved and easy to navigate. Many of the amenities are closed for covid but there were still people riding around on their bikes. Definitely a bike-centric park with trails and bike paths around. It's not located next door to Traverse City but it's not far to get to most things. We camped at Timber Ridge Campground & Recreation Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

    Shawnee Forest Campground

    EV Car Camping

I’m a novice car camper, sleeping in my Tesla Model 3. This campground is quiet and clean. The host is very friendly and knowledgeable. Each site has 50 amp electric service (so you can charge your EV with a NEMA 14-50 plug), fresh water, fire pits, and picnic tables. A nice stop to visit the Shawnee National Forest.

    South Sandusky Campground

    5 Star COE

Using your GPS of choice, you can reach this campground off I-57 via Benton or the IL-154/Sesser exit. The area includes both North Sandusky and South Sandusky COE campgrounds, clearly marked and easy to find. We arrived around 2:00 PM and found the check-in gate closed, but since we had a reservation, we proceeded directly to our back-in site 123 with full hookups. Most sites here offer water and electric (50/30/20 AMP), while the Dogwood loop features several full hookup sites in its upper section. Note that the loop has low-sloping ditches on both sides of the road, so precise backing is needed to land on the asphalt pad. There’s one full hookup pull-through site in the Dogwood loop—a long, slightly curved pad with sewer and power connections on the yard side, and water on the standard side. Both North and South Sandusky COE campgrounds offer a wide variety of site types, including lake views, varying utility setups, and well-spaced sites. Paved bike trails run throughout the area. We've been coming here for years, and this campground remains one of our favorites close to home.

Guide to Bargerville

Camping options near Bargerville, Illinois include several facilities within Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge where sites are positioned directly on the lakeshore. The region features rolling hills with elevations ranging from 400-600 feet above sea level and experiences hot, humid summers with winter temperatures that regularly drop below freezing. Most campgrounds in the area maintain gravel or concrete pads with variable spacing between sites.

What to do

Fishing at Crab Orchard Lake: Multiple access points allow for bank fishing and boat launches at Crab Orchard Lake Campground where anglers frequently catch catfish and crappie. "Fishing was good (especially catfish and crappie)," reports one camper who stayed five nights at Site A5.

Hiking nearby trails: Several hiking paths within 10-30 minute drives from campsites offer varied terrain options. "There is a nice trail across from the primitive camping site which also has a pond for fishing as well," notes a visitor to Giant City State Park Campground who stayed at the primitive site area.

Local wineries: The Alto Pass region (approximately 30 minutes from Carbondale) features multiple wineries worth visiting. "Locals told us they are open more hours during summer," mentions one camper who found them closed on a Tuesday in early April.

What campers like

Spacious lakefront sites: The waterfront camping areas provide generous spacing and natural settings. At Crab Orchard Lake Crab Orchard NWR, "We spent 5 nights on Site A5... The 2 nearest to us we saw on Sunday (Easter) and the only 1 more time during the 5 days," indicating minimal crowding despite full occupancy.

Clean facilities: Most campgrounds maintain well-kept shower buildings and restrooms. "The main bathhouse is older, but nice and clean! There is a vault only bathroom at the back of the campground," reports a camper who visited Giant City State Park during Easter weekend.

Affordable pricing: Campsite rates run lower than the regional average. "Cheap campground that is clean and quiet. The back in site we had overlooked the lake. For the price, you can't beat the view," writes a visitor to Crab Orchard Lake describing their value assessment.

What you should know

First-come, first-served availability: Several campgrounds don't accept advance reservations. "The biggest thing about this campground is first come first serve..and one loop is closed for renovations. Most you can spend here is 14 days, which lots of locals do," explains a camper about the system at Crab Orchard.

Highway noise varies: Traffic sound can affect certain sites more than others. At Perryville RV Resort By Rjourney, one reviewer noted "The highway is also extremely close and can be heard at all times," while another mentioned "It is right off from the interstate, so there is some noise."

Wildlife considerations: Snake sightings occur occasionally in warmer months. "Someone in one of the sites by the lake (A9, A11 or A13 I think) said they saw snakes but we never saw any and our dogs would have noticed," reports a camper who stayed at Crab Orchard in early April.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several rv sites near Bargerville, Illinois offer dedicated play areas. At Archway RV Park, "There is a nice playground and dog park as well as a pond at the location. Great place to stop traveling through or for a weekend," according to a recent visitor.

Recreation options: Some campgrounds provide unique entertainment features. "The park is clean and well maintained. They put in a new swimming pool in this past summer. I did not try it but it looked nice," writes a September visitor to Perryville RV Resort.

Educational opportunities: Rangers sometimes provide activities for younger campers. "Friendly staff sometimes host little educational presentations for kids," mentions a reviewer about Giant City State Park Campground's programming.

Tips from RVers

Pull-through site availability: Several campgrounds offer drive-through spots that eliminate backing requirements. At Saline Creek RV Park and Campground, "Sweet RV campground! Very clean, quiet, and beautiful. New sites, tables, and a beautiful creek," reports a camper who stopped while traveling to Florida.

Site spacing considerations: Some properties provide more room between units than others. "Sites are nice, although all sites face each other meaning you will be 5-10 feet from your neighbors if you are sitting out front. Full-hookups with only a 50amp connection so if you are using 30 make sure you have a 50/30 adapter," advises a visitor to Archway RV Park.

Cell service quality: Remote work capability varies by provider and location. At Crab Orchard, "We have AT&T and had full bars (we also have a booster, which may have contributed to a strong signal)," reports a camper who visited in April 2023, indicating viable connectivity options.
