Best RV Parks & Resorts near Benton, IL

Benton KOA provides year-round RV camping with full hookups, making it a central option for motorhome travelers exploring southern Illinois. Located directly in Benton, this campground accommodates big rigs and offers both water and sewer connections alongside electric service. Just 15 minutes north in Sesser, South Sandusky Campground features 119 sites with electric hookups, including 16 full-hookup sites with both 30 and 50 amp service. The campground operates from late March through early November and caters to larger RVs with spacious sites. "Most sites are fairly level, but some have an incline to get into. Sites have water and sewer, and a picnic table," notes one RVer about the North Sandusky area. Gun Creek Campground, situated near Whittington, provides concrete pads for RVs but campers should be aware that "the sites are not very level," according to visitor feedback.

Reservations are essential for most RV parks in the region, with recreation.gov handling bookings for the Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Rend Lake. Dump stations are available at most locations, though Marion Campground & RV Park lacks this amenity despite offering full hookups. Cell service varies throughout the area, with most campgrounds reporting adequate coverage for AT&T and Verizon users. Pet-friendly policies are standard across all RV sites near Benton, with designated dog areas at some parks. Interstate access makes these campgrounds convenient stopover points for travelers on I-57, though highway noise can be noticeable at locations like Marion Campground. During peak seasons (April through October), RV campers should secure reservations well in advance, particularly for waterfront sites which tend to fill quickly.

    Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

Many lakeside sites, extra long drives for boat trailers, quiet and scenic

Rend Lake is a large COE recreation area with 4 campgrounds, some with full hook ups for $28 a night, two dams, 2 beaches, several boat launches, a marina, golf course and a restaurant.  Not all facilities were open when we visited in March.  Hiking and biking trails and close to town for gas and bait.  Each site has a stone picnic table and fire ring.  Showers, bathrooms and  playgrounds in multiple places and convenient locations.  Some sites do have steep grade, originally booked Bluejay 48 and moved.

    Coles Creek Recreation Area

    Nice lake, quiet campground

Coles Creek Campground on Carlyle Lake has 219 sites, most with full hookups, and shade. (There is 30 & 50 a as no service). Internet is spotty. There are also 2 group campsites with cabins. There are showers, flush toilet, a playground, fish cleaning station, boat ramp and a dump station. There is also a laundry area. All the campsites are either on the shoreline or a short walk to the lake. The whole campground is fairly flat, so the sites are level and easy to get into. There are a few pull through sites. Comes Creek is on the east side of Carlyle Lake, away from the larger, more crowded Hazlet State Park area. It’s a great place for fishing and boating or just enjoying the lake. The lake is a prime fishing and boating lake, and is recognized as one of the nation's top ten inland sailing lakes.

    Quiet camping convenient to I-57

    South Sandusky Campground

    5 Star COE

Using your GPS of choice, you can reach this campground off I-57 via Benton or the IL-154/Sesser exit. The area includes both North Sandusky and South Sandusky COE campgrounds, clearly marked and easy to find. We arrived around 2:00 PM and found the check-in gate closed, but since we had a reservation, we proceeded directly to our back-in site 123 with full hookups. Most sites here offer water and electric (50/30/20 AMP), while the Dogwood loop features several full hookup sites in its upper section. Note that the loop has low-sloping ditches on both sides of the road, so precise backing is needed to land on the asphalt pad. There’s one full hookup pull-through site in the Dogwood loop—a long, slightly curved pad with sewer and power connections on the yard side, and water on the standard side. Both North and South Sandusky COE campgrounds offer a wide variety of site types, including lake views, varying utility setups, and well-spaced sites. Paved bike trails run throughout the area. We've been coming here for years, and this campground remains one of our favorites close to home.

    Timber Ridge Outpost & Cabins

    Not bad

Paid $35 per night for 2 nights after our Passport America discount. Not sure it would have been worth the full price. Full hookups. 50amp, water (55psi), and sewer. Cell coverage for AT&T and Verizon were both adequate to stream and work. The check-in process was a bit slow. We kinda expected that since it took us a dozen calls just to get someone to pick up the phone to make a reservation. We were first in line at check-in and spent at least 10 minutes going over all sorts of rules and information. Luckily we showed up at 3:05pm because they charge $25 for "early check-in" any time before 3pm. We're full-time RVers and have stayed at nearly 140 campgrounds and that's the first time we've seen something before 3pm called "early" and that's a pretty steep price for check-in. Our entire section of the campground was empty. Our neighbors actually showed up at 2pm and opted to wait an hour in the parking lot to go to their un-occupied site rather than paying $25. But besides the check-in, the campground was beautiful. Plenty of tree cover. The roads are paved and easy to navigate. Many of the amenities are closed for covid but there were still people riding around on their bikes. Definitely a bike-centric park with trails and bike paths around. It's not located next door to Traverse City but it's not far to get to most things. We camped at Timber Ridge Campground & Recreation Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

We come here often. $25.00/night.

Guide to Benton

Rend Lake near Benton, Illinois sits at an elevation of 405 feet with over 160 miles of shoreline surrounding the 18,900-acre reservoir. Camping options cluster around the lake's extensive shoreline, particularly along the western and northern edges where most developed camping facilities operate from late March through early November. Winter temperatures in the region average 30-40°F while summer months typically reach 85-90°F.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Gun Creek Campground offers excellent lake access with fishing directly from lakeside sites. "Site 30, located directly on the water in the Nighthawk campground" provides water views and direct access according to one camper, who noted "I like to camp at lakes because I enjoy kayaking and this lake would allow for all kinds of water activities."

Biking trails: South Sandusky Campground features paved bike paths throughout the property. "Paved bike trails run throughout the area," notes one reviewer who's been visiting for years. Another visitor mentioned "There is a paved bike trail" that doubles as a walking trail with "beautiful scenery along the way."

Disc golf: The North Sandusky Recreation Area provides a disc golf course for campers looking for recreational activities beyond water sports. "There is a boat dock, boat ramp, playground, and disk golf course," notes a reviewer who appreciates the variety of activities available at the campground.

What campers like

Spacious sites: North Sandusky Campground receives high marks for site size. "The sites all seem to be fairly well maintained and roomy. Site 42 is very spacious," reports one camper. Another notes "Campsite sizes vary, but all are reasonably spaced."

Wildlife viewing: The natural setting around Rend Lake attracts diverse wildlife. "We have had deer playing on an adjacent site to us. Fun place to camp with family and friends," shared one visitor to North Sandusky. The natural shoreline features "exposed roots of trees along the shore, erosion at work," providing an interesting landscape.

Lake views: Many campsites throughout the rv campgrounds near Benton offer water views. "South Sandusky campground is a Corps of Engineers campground on Rend Lake, just off I-57 in Southern Illinois... Most of the sites are wooded with space between them, and many have lake views," explains one reviewer who appreciated the setting.

What you should know

Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at some campgrounds. At Arrowhead Lake Campground, "The tent sites were adequate and semi level," according to one visitor. At South Sandusky, a reviewer noted "They are not very level so some adjustments were needed," while another explained "Our site (#90) had a drop off between the drive way and the picnic table/fire ring. We had to use blocks so our camper stairs would reach the ground."

Seasonal considerations: Most Benton area rv parks operate seasonally. South Sandusky runs "from March 28 to November 2" while North Sandusky operates "from March 30 to October 28." For year-round options, consider Archway RV Park or Benton KOA which both operate throughout winter months.

Highway noise: Some RV campgrounds near Benton experience road noise. "It's a KOA. Convenience of being easy off an interstate has its tradeoffs," noted one Benton KOA visitor. Another camper mentioned "One of the down sides is that you can clearly hear the highway from the campground, and of course if you have a lake site, you will have plenty of boat noise."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Archway RV Park offers dedicated play areas for children. "There is a nice playground and dog park as well as a pond at the location," reports one visitor. Similar facilities exist at South Sandusky where "There is a sand beach, boat ramp, 2 picnic shelters, a paved bike trail, and playgrounds."

Swimming opportunities: Several campgrounds feature swimming beaches. "It's also just a short drive from the South Sandusky swimming beach. It's sometimes pretty rocky in the water so we usually wear water shoes," advises one regular visitor.

Kid-friendly activities: Arrowhead Lake Campground features "large childrens playground" along with a lake full of waterfowl. "We walked a nature trail and down by the lake. There were ducks and geese, and it was a lovely reprieve from our travels to walk along the edges of the lake," shared one visitor.

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Marion Campground & RV Park offers full hookups for those needing complete services. "Pull thru, 50 amp, full hookup. Bar, gaming, laundry, wifi, and showers on site," reports one visitor. At Archway RV Park, "Sites are nice, although all sites face each other meaning you will be 5-10 feet from your neighbors if you are sitting out front. Full-hookups with only a 50amp connection so if you are using 30 make sure you have a 50/30 adapter."

Internet access: Cell service and WiFi quality varies between rv parks in Benton. At North Sandusky, campers report "We had ATT and Tmobile service at our site. Signal was strong enough to stream video and work remotely." At Archway RV Park, "The WiFi works great as I was able to stream anything I wanted on Hulu," though another location warned "Internet on this side is non-existent and I only have 1 or 2 bars on Verizon."

Easy access locations: For travelers passing through, several campgrounds offer convenient highway access. "We travel between Charleston, SC and Omaha, NE several times a year and always stay here on return trip," notes one Archway RV visitor. "Easy on and off Interstate 64," mentions another, while Marion Campground & RV Park is described as "very handy to interstate, well maintained, dry pads, easy connections."
