Red Rock RV Park by Open Road Resorts

    Not worth the money...stay elsewhere

Booked 6 months in advance and based it on many good reviews. Was promised a new, upgraded campground with a premium site. Found new section is not completed and under construction. Was placed on site 40, which is terribly unlevel, a muddy mess with no crush, no patio and a tree that lays disgusting bushy bug-like buds every day all over everything. The only site like this. We could not enjoy it outside at all. No dog park as advertised. Paid a good deal for a week and was very disappointed. It was far from all the attractions at Yellowstone. It takes 30 min to get to the west gate, and over an hour and half to any points in the park. People seemed nice enough. Did see a moose close by and the laundry room and store were nice. The store was way overpriced tho. West Yellowstone seemed much nicer and closer to NP. Wouldn't stay here again. So disappointed that we booked a week here. The site was horrible and I was told it was a nice site when I questioned it by staff.

    Sugar City RV Park

    Sugar City RV

Very nice "state of the art" RV Park. Clean showers, nice clothes wash facilities, dog friendly with fenced run area, cat approved by "Liza", just in her trailer trash tabby space. Great access to Tetons and Yellowstone, good shopping overall in Sugar City and nearby Rexburg. But ! It's not boondocking or cheap, so we'll live with it for our Yellowstone and Teton visit

    Grand View Campground (Targhee NF)

    Hidden Gem!

I’ve lived in Idaho Falls almost my whole life and visited Ashton and Island Park countless times and had no idea this was here! I lucked into a first come spot because someone had cancelled their online reservation and was able to stay two nights here. Dog friendly, zero cell service like at all.

I got spot 4, right next to the delightful camp hosts! Electricity at each camp site, two double sites, all the trees you could ever want! A very very quiet and peaceful campground. 10/10. Will be back.

It’s steps away from Lower Mesa Falls! Not far from Ashton if you forget something and close enough to West Yellowstone if you want to stay somewhere further from the park!

Red Rock RV Park by Open Road Resorts

    Great Views

We were here to attend the 2023 Lippert Getaway and the staff did an amazing job making sure the park looked it's very best. As we had been here before, the campground (CG) was easy to find, but some people did say that their RV GPS wanted to take them down a dirt road on the other side of Henry Lake. Campers coming to Red Rock RV Park should come in on US-20 to Red Rock Pass Road. Check-in was very thorough, and we were escorted to premium pull-through site 69. Our daily rate reflects Lippert’s special RV rally rate plus two extra days at the full rate averaged out. We stayed here in September 2019, and now, under new ownership, the CG has doubled in sites and added a nice-sized fenced dog park, plus a second laundry and bathroom facility. The water here is very good pressure-wise, and we didn’t need to use our softener. The sites are pretty close together, so try to get an end site to have more yard area. The section we stayed in did not have mature trees, so using the satellite was no problem. The original section, sites 1-54, has many mature trees, so using satellite would be iffy. We got two bars on Verizon, and their WiFi was okay. The CG is about 30 minutes from Yellowstone’s west gate. We did get double charged for a propane tank fill and didn't catch it until after we had departed. I reached out via email with the proof of the double charge and they immediately credited my card. This is a very nice park with awesome views, but their normal rates are really over-priced in our opinion.

    Darby Canyon Dispersed

    Darby

I have not personally spent the night camping here, but I do work for the Forest Service and wanted to give more information about the Darby Canyon dispersed camping sites. I also had a friend stay here for three nights last September and they had a good time. There are about 10~ sites (I will check and edit when I can) all along the canyon road, some are just right off road and others require a short drive down beaten paths to find the sites. All of these sites (except 2 or so very close to the road) are past the cattle guard. Depending on the time of year, many of these sites may not be accessible. Snow typically stays in the canyon until mid-June and starts collecting in October. The area may also be buggy at the height of the summer (July 2024 had been atrocious). There is limited cell service down most of the road and it completely disappears the closer to the Wind Cave trailhead you get. This area has a 14 day stay limit, meaning that once 14 days (13 nights) have been reached you must move at least 5 miles away to continue camping on forest service land and cannot return to this canyon to camp for 30 days. This is in a bear food storage enforced area and any bear attractants (food, pet food, soaps, sunscreen, etc.) are required to be stored properly in a locked hard sided vehicle or other bear resistant containers. Fires are allowed but must be put out dead (cold to the touch) before leaving a campsite. This canyon is regularly patrolled by Forest Service staff and ranger law enforcement officers, especially on the weekends, to keep up with the food storage and fires out dead orders. Hope this helps weary travelers that are deterred by low-rated reviews.

    USFS Teton Canyon Campground

Beautiful oasis away from it all!

Teton Canyon was an amazing getaway! Travel up to the camp ground by truck or 4 wheel drive. There was still snow and ice at the end of May! This was a beautiful campground settled in the mountains alongside a stream running with freshly melted snow. The hikes are breathtaking! We even came across an old avalanche. Super relaxing place. This is an off the grid campground. No showers or running water. There were some exceptionally clean bathroom outbuildings though. Bring plenty of firewood. Make sure to use the provided bear proof boxes too! We didn’t come across any bears, but we had a moose that frequented our site every morning! Lots of beautiful wildlife to see and hear. Pet friendly campsite and hiking!

    Henrys Lake State Park Campground

Amazing Views & Great Yellowstone Base

This campground is situation on Henrys Lake and provides amazing views from the campground. There are trails to explore without going too far. The park is ~20 minutes from the West Yellowstone entry, but nestled away from the hustle of the tourist town. Clean shower house. Super friendly staff/hosts/rangers.

    My only negative is it’s $71 a night if you’re a non-Idaho resident.

Overall we’d stay here again hands down!

Guide to Saint Anthony

Near Saint Anthony, Idaho, dispersed camping options range from riverfront sites to sand dune adjacent areas at elevations around 5,000 feet. The region experiences hot summer days with cool nights and generally dry conditions from late spring through early fall. Winter camping restrictions apply at several locations with seasonal closures from February through September.

What to do

Sand dune sledding: At St. Anthony Sand Dunes, visitors can sled down the 400-foot high dunes for a unique adventure. "If you love Sand dunes then you'll love this campsite. Obviously quite sandy but if you know how to manage it, it's not an issue. Great place to stay if you are down for some serious adventure. Had a lot of fun sliding down the Sandune's on sleds," notes a camper at Sand Hills Resort.

Fishing access: Many campgrounds offer direct river or lake access for fishing enthusiasts. "Great place to fish, kayak, or float the river. Some campsites will have a picnic table," shares a visitor to Warm Slough. For families, Beaver Dick Park offers convenient fishing opportunities with "a great little spot where the river slows at the park where you can sit on the dock, fish, and even play in the water."

Water recreation: Swimming, boating and paddling options exist throughout the area, though caution is advised in some locations. "If you swim in the water, there are leaches. But if you stay on the shore edge they won't bother you," warns a camper about Egin Lakes. The Snake River provides multiple access points for water activities, with Warm Slough offering "great water access" according to reviewers.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Campers appreciate the privacy and separation between sites at several campgrounds. "Each site has a fire ring and plenty of privacy. Toilets are operating and clean. Right on the banks of the slough," notes a Warm Slough visitor. At Beaver Dick Park Campground, campers enjoy that it "feels safe (close to other campers) while still having your privacy (trees between most campsites)."

Budget-friendly options: Free and low-cost camping appeals to many visitors. "Good for the price($0). As many free sites are it hasn't been maintained or respected by those who use it. But there's some picnic tables and fire pits and plenty of space," shares one Warm Slough camper. Beaver Dick Park offers affordable camping at "$10 a night" which "isn't bad" according to reviewers.

Recreation amenities: Many sites offer additional activities beyond standard camping. At Beaver Dick Park, visitors enjoy "disk golf! Excellent short course" and "a fun, little park for the kids." The campground also features "trails at the back of the campsite" and a "playground" making it versatile for different interests.

What you should know

Navigation challenges: Finding some campgrounds requires careful planning. "This place was hard to find - I almost gave up. The GPS directions and coordinates on this app are both wrong. Take Warm Slough Rd off 4000 N. Ignore the no trespassing signs- they refer to the land on either side of the road," advises a visitor to Warm Slough.

Bathroom conditions: Facility maintenance varies widely between campgrounds. At Eagle Park Campground, "Pit toilets none seem to lock and nine had TP so bring your own." Similarly at Warm Slough, "the main one is pretty dirty" and at another location "there are 2 pit toilets. The one at the front is truly disgusting. The one further in by the boat launch is clean, but no TP."

Seasonal restrictions: Several campgrounds have specific operating seasons. Warm Slough permits "camping only allowed Oct 1 to Jan 31. 10 days max," while other campgrounds may close during winter months or have different seasonal operations. Check current regulations before planning your trip.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Families appreciate dedicated play areas at certain campgrounds. At Wakeside Lake RV Park, "My only complaint was that their website says there's a playground and I could not find one. My kiddo was entertained enough by the water though so it worked out." In contrast, Beaver Dick Park offers "a playground and picnic areas that I'm sure would be great for families!"

Safety considerations: Parents value feeling secure while camping with children. Beaver Dick Park is "the perfect place to camp if you are looking for a campground that feels safe (close to other campers)." It's also noted as being "especially [good] with little kids because you are still close to civilization!"

Water play options: Children enjoy swimming areas, though parents should exercise caution. At Egin Lakes, "The beach area is nice and can get pretty busy on the weekends. Be careful though, if you swim in the water, there are leaches." Beaver Dick Park offers safer water play with "a great little spot where the river slows at the park where you can sit on the dock, fish, and even play in the water."

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Different parks offer various levels of utility connections. At Jolley Camper RV & Cottages, "Full hook ups were nice to have, but the camp spots were very tight. Our sight was basically on the road, we couldn't even put our awning out." For those needing higher power, Wakeside Lake RV Park provides "only a 30-amp service, which may be an issue for larger rigs requiring more power."

Site spacing: RV campers should consider site size when booking. At Jolley Camper, "the camp spots were very tight. Our sight was basically on the road, we couldn't even put our awning out." In contrast, at Egin Lakes "Individual campsites with electrical hookups. Very accommodating" and sites are "big sites (plenty for a big motor home and trailer)."

Pet-friendly considerations: For RVers traveling with dogs, most campgrounds are accommodating. The dog friendly campgrounds near Saint Anthony typically require leashing pets. Sugar City RV Park is particularly "dog friendly with fenced run area," providing a dedicated space for pets to exercise safely.
