High in the Caribou–Targhee National Forest, 90 miles northeast of Idaho Falls, Henrys Lake is a stone’s throw from the Continental Divide and the western boundary of Yellowstone National Park. Situated in a wide, flat basin, and surrounded by 10,000-foot peaks, this shallow alpine lake is as popular with migrating birds as it is with local sport fishers. The small state park at Henrys Lake is a great spot for spending a few days fishing, lounging and wildlife watching, or for exploring some of the area’s other attractions, including Yellowstone, Harriman State Park, Mesa Falls, and various hiking, horseback, and ATV trails. Campers visiting Henrys Lake State Park will find more than 80 tent and RV sites situated near the lake’s eastern shore. Sites are equipped with electrical and water hookups, picnic tables, and fire pits with cooking grills. Some sites are ADA accessible. Campground amenities include flush restrooms, showers, picnic areas. A dump station is located onsite. The park also has a few camping cabins for rent. Dogs are permitted in the park, but must remain leashed. Camping is available from mid-May through mid-October. Sites are $20–$31/night; cabins are $50–$55/night; reservations are accepted. For fishing on the lake, the park has a boat ramp and fish cleaning station. Yellowstone cutthroat is the most common at Henrys Lake, but there is also a significant number of cutthroat-rainbow (cut-bow) hybrids. Paddlers can launch from the beach area; kayak rentals are available. Wildlife watching from the park’s 3 miles of hiking and biking trails—as well as the lake’s shoreline–can be exceptional. Besides the prolific number of migrating birds, including waterfowl, eagles and hawks, there are frequent sightings of deer, moose, and antelope. The park also hosts seasonal nature programs.

      Overview

Flat Rock Campground is located 22 miles south of West Yellowstone, Montana and 30 miles north of Ashton, Idaho in beautiful Island Park, Idaho. Flat Rock is adjacent to U.S. Highway 20 and the Henry's Fork of the Snake River at an elevation of 6,400 feet.

      Recreation

Henry's Fork has great fly-fishing for rainbow and brook trout. The river's headwaters are at Big Springs, one of the nation's largest springs, just 4.5 miles from the campground. Tubing, canoeing, kayaking and rafting are also popular on the river. The Big Springs National Recreation Water Trail begins at Big Springs and ends just northeast of the campground at Macks Inn. It offers a lazy three-hour float or canoe trip through beautiful scenery. Wildlife, including moose, bald eagles and Sandhill cranes, is often seen along the trail. Hiking, biking, horseback riding and ATVing are popular activities. Many miles of trails crisscross Island Park, including the 2.5-mile Coffee Pot Rapids Trail, which begins at nearby Upper Coffee Pot Campground and meanders along the riverbank. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and the Nez Perce Trail are in the area. Island Park Reservoir and Henry's Lake are nearby, both offer boating, water skiing and excellent fishing opportunities.

      Natural Features

Island Park is composed of two areas of extinct volcanic activity. The Henry's Fork Caldera sits inside the larger Island Park Caldera. The area is known for its dense forests of lodgepole pine, broad grassy meadows bursting with summer wildflowers and a wide variety of wildlife, including black and grizzly bears, moose, elk, deer, bald eagles, Sandhill cranes and much, much more. A mixed growth of lodgepole pine forest provides partial shade. A portion of one loop is fairly close to the river and some sites have river views.

      Nearby Attractions

Mesa Falls Scenic Byway is 11 miles south of the campground. This 28-mile road leads to scenic overlooks and trails at 110 foot Upper Mesa Falls and 85 foot Lower Mesa Falls. Harriman State Park is 13 miles south. The Henry's Fork meanders through the Harriman, offering excellent fishing. Over 20 miles of trails are available, and wildlife is abundant in this scenic park. Henry's Lake State Park is 10 miles north, offering fishing, a fish cleaning station and boat ramp. Yellowstone National Park's west entrance is just 22 miles north in the town of West Yellowstone, Montana. Visitors enjoy day-tripping to the park for unparalleled wildlife viewing and the beautiful and unique scenery.

Cabins could be so much more

It's an hour drive to Jackson. Around 1 1/2hrs to GTNP and 2+hrs to YNP. Cabin needs a few minor details to be better. Full length mirror, towel racks, instructions on how things work like washer/dryer combo and propane stove.

      Fabulous little park

This park has very clean bathrooms, great showers, and grass so thick you don’t need to wear shoes! Great setting, helpful staff and out in an area of dark skies. Electricity went out at one point our first night here but we have solar panels so we’re ok.

      State park

Really enjoyed the stay. Really nice shower are. Nice electric hook-ups at the rv sites. Only some sites have septic, and unfortunately, the dump station was down during our visit, but we got to hear stories from a native American. It was truly an amazing stay. We also enjoyed bird watching and kayaking. Of course, our main point of the visit was Yellowstone not very far away. ( gas and other stuff is cheaper in Montana)

Slightly Below Average and Very Dusty

This place is about half full-time residents in the back and the rest short term overnighters. Everything is gravel and dirt. This place is very dusty and it's easy to see no gravel has been laid down for years. It rained the first night I was there, and the roads ( and my site) were a muddy mess. I had the windows open the next day and within an hour, my counters were covered with a fine layer of dust from the Yahoo's driving by at 30 miles an hour. The full-time portion of the park is very trashy. You can tell no maintenance has been done on this place for years. But the prices are reasonable. I only stayed two nights, and it was okay for a stopover.

      Great spot

We pulled in and was greeted right away by the camp host who directed us to an open spot. We had a site with an electric hook up for $26 a night. Spot was great and very clean with bathrooms close by. We fit our 33’ pull behind easily. Close to the main road so you can hear traffic but it was tolerable!

      Beautiful park

      Staff friendly, view lovely.

Definitely peeved that there is a $30 upcharge for non-residents and they only give discounts to Idaho military. Interesting!! North Carolina should consider doing this since we have BEAUTIFUL state parks too. Do what Idaho is doing to everyone else...kind of sad...would have given five stars if wasn't for this....army vet of 22 years.

      Wind Willows RV Park

      Nice park, but needs manners!

I was torn on what to rate it. The park is nice and quiet and a good majority of the people that stay there long term are wonderful. I would rate it a 5 stars on that! I stayed about 7-8 months and in the last month it went down hill fast. Double standards for a lot of campers... It honestly needs someone for the camp host that will actually be there and truly will take care of it. Not threaten to lock everyone out of the laundry room and showers all the time. Actual have a set type of rules that everyone including camp host have to abide by. They need to up their screening process, so that the RV park can be safe for children and other guests. A full grown person running around naked and screaming, isn't safe for anyone let alone children! What's worst is when complaint are filed, they let them stay... A proper maintenance crew, so when things are broken they can be fixed in a timely manner and not when the camp host feels like it. Also, the group texting is fine if there was a proper amount of manners involved. I was wondering whether or not to attach pictures of the messages and everything. I believe they have the right to know and honestly I don't think they do. I dropped the rating because yes I do believe this is a nice park and other guests help each other out, but after everything this pass month and the amount of cops doing searches and rude customer service I had to drop it down. I hope anyone who stays here has a good experience there are a lot of nice patrons. Have a nice day.

Suitable Stopover, But Limited For Kids

We recently used Westlake RV Park in Rexburg, ID as a quick stopover during our travels. It's a quaint, older campground with well-maintained facilities and noticeably clean surroundings, which we appreciated.

The campground is on the smaller side, yet the spots are generously wide, providing ample space for our RV. However, it's worth noting that our site was only equipped with a 30-amp service, which may be an issue for larger rigs requiring more power.

Unfortunately, there isn't much in the way of entertainment or activities for children. This could be a drawback for families looking for a more engaging camping experience.

All in all, Westlake RV Park is a practical choice for a brief stay or a stopover, but perhaps not the best fit for those seeking a more kid-friendly environment or requiring higher power service.

      Great Campsite

I noticed that another review said there was not much space, but if you’re just hiking or biking and have a smallish tent, the host allows you to camp in a large open grassy area with a clear view of the Tetons. Great facilities, friendly and helpful host, just off highway 20. Highly recommended!

      Great campground

We were thrilled to be camping in the trees after being in the deserts of Utah and a city RV park in Cody. Sites were easy to access, even for big rigs. We were greeted at the road, escorted to our spot, and expertly guided into our spot. On one of our days, we did a 7 hour road trip to Old Faithful and down through the Tetons.

Easy to find. Short drive from the campground to some restaurants, gas stations, grocery store, etc in the area. There are 2 bar/grills walking distance from the campground. Has a Heated pool. Fenced in dog areas. we were just there for one night while we were passing through. So im not sure how the amenities were, i never used any of them. I thought it was actually on the snake river when i booked it. But its not quite on the river. Lol but it was still a nice stay for the night. The staff was friendly, and the lady at the desk gave me a little stuffed snake for staying at “snake river”. It was cute.

      Lake camping with great views

We stayed here as a one night stop over to rest between Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. It’s on a beautiful lake with Mountain views all around. It’s extremely peaceful out here and east access to the lake for kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing. There is a hiking trail through the park and it is very close to multiple trailheads in the national forest nearby. Only downside is the mosquitoes, but it’s summer so I expect them almost everywhere right now. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is the price. When I selected this site it was $37 but when I put in my info and booked it was over $80. For that price we typically get full hookups, and I never pay that much for a state park in the south.
