Best Dog-Friendly Camping near American Falls, ID

Massacre Rocks State Park Campground accepts pets in both tent camping areas and cabin accommodations. Located along the Snake River near American Falls, the campground provides electric hookups, water, and sewer connections for RV travelers with animals. Picnic tables and fire pits are available at each site, with drinking water stations throughout the grounds. Leashed pets must remain attended at all times while in the park, with waste disposal stations positioned near the main camping loops. Indian Springs Resort and RV offers similar pet-friendly facilities with additional amenities including a small stream running behind some campsites where dogs can cool off. The sites at Indian Springs back up to a small running creek filled with fish, creating an ideal environment for pets that enjoy water.

Snake River Vista Recreation Site provides primitive camping opportunities for visitors with dogs, offering several dispersed camping spots near the water. The free camping area features multiple sites along the riverbank with established fire rings, though the access road can be challenging with deep ruts requiring vehicles with reasonable clearance. Pet owners should bring all necessary supplies as the site lacks amenities like drinking water, trash service or hookups. Beautiful views of the Snake River provide a serene backdrop for overnight stays, though summer temperatures can become extremely hot for animals. Willow Bay Resort presents another option with pet-friendly cabins and spacious sites that include large grass areas ideal for exercising dogs. Trails around the resort accommodate both hiking and biking with pets, though the water level in the reservoir fluctuates seasonally, occasionally limiting shoreline access.

    Massacre Rocks State Park Campground

    Great little place to stay

This beautiful state park is located right off of the freeway about 7 miles outside of American Falls, Idaho. There is a little bit of road noise at the park because of the proximity to the freeway but it wasn't a bother at all. The views of the river are beautiful and the sunset was amazing. There are a lot of trails to walk on here, and since the park is pet friendly our three big dogs walked the trails with us. There is a disc golf course, although we didn't try it out. The camp host was great. The bathrooms were clean, although only half of them are open in the off season. The only draw back we could see is that the spots aren't very spacious, so if you're new at parking your rig, or if you have a really large rig, it could be a tight fit. We were in a 33 ft TT and the pull through spot (17) was plenty long, but kind of narrow. Spot has 50 and 30 amp hook ups as well as water if you camp during the summer-no water in the off season.

    Lake Cascade/Curlew Campground

Pretty Campground Surrounded by Grass anand a Reservoir

Coming from the Snake River Plain and eastern montana this campground was just like visiting home for us!  (Idaho is one of my homes)  It was a beautiful site of rolling grass underneath the dark grey skies of an encroaching storm.

At the campground there are a variety of campground from huge 200+ person group sites to single, double, and triple sites.  We really enjoyed having a quick lunch on the far north side of the reservoir where there are awnings with metal fire rings and numerous bathrooms.  Just a warning however that the road leading north towards American Falls was closed when we were there in early July

    Snake River Vista Recreation Site

    Wonderful secluded spot

This site is right above the snake River so you can hear the water, wonderful way to fall asleep! You are in the High Desert of Idaho so this site is amongst sagebrush but has good shade trees also. When I was there I could start a tent but this ground does tend to get pretty hard during dry season so staking may be a bit more difficult.

There are actually 2 sites you can pitch a tent or park a vehicle. There is also a firepit. I got really good cell reception. There are fun trails to explore with beautiful scenery. This would also be a great spot if you like to pole fish. You can walk to the river and cast in! This spot os about 8 miles to the American Falls Dam where you can kayak, SUP, fish, and picnic

The directions were spot on. I recommend a vehicle with relatively high clearance. It os closer to the interstate than you would expect so you can hear vehicles but was super quiet at night

    Massacre Rocks State Park Campground

State Park on the Snake River

    PROS:

    • Easy access to the interstate
    • Host and Visitor Center worker were extremely nice
    • All sites have E/W
    • Sites were private, generous and clean
    • A lot of the sites have great views of the Snake River and canyon wall
    • Great historic area on the Oregon Trail
    • Disc golf
    • Easy access to the River at the sperate boat launch area 1 mile away
    • Day use area away from campground
    • Bathhouse on both upper and lower loop. Showers. (Very dated, but clean)
    • Hubby said to mention there are ample Pokémon opportunities.
    • There are a couple of cabins with great views.

    CONS:

    • Not a lot of shade
    • Closest shopping is American Falls which is very limited. Pocatello is about 40 min away but has great breweries, food, Gander RV (large retail store) and large town stores.
    • Bathhouse is dates and has heavy oxidation in the shower which makes them appear dirty, but they are not.
    • If in the upper loop, you do hear the Interstate noise. Not in the lower loop at all.

    We would definitely stay again

    Willow Bay Resort

    Nice Location

We stopped her in October and  the water level was extremely low.   The boats were dry docked and could not access the marina.  We chose this campground because we wanted to visit American Falls, which we did.  The area was beautiful, but there was not enough water to create a fall.

The campground is very peaceful with very large spaces and well kept.   We has a large grass area with a picnic table and fire pit, fires were prohibited while we were there because of the low water conditions.  Behind our space was the river/lake area that was dry.   Still the park had great views of the mountains and was very pretty.   There are many trails around for bike riding or off road vehicles.

The sites are full hook up, there is a bath/shower house and a laundry.  The staff is very helpful.  We were a bit early and when we arrived Jason was mowing our space.  It was completed very quickly.  There are restaurants in town about 5-10 minutes away and a grocery.  Wifi was excellent on T-Mobile and Visible.

    Lava Hot Springs West KOA

    Not camping, but still great

Don’t get me wrong. This is not camping. But it’s the perfect spot if you want to be around all the fun action of Lava Hot Springs. You’re walking distance to the river, restaurants, the pool and all the fun stuff in Lava. We were on site #1 which is by the playground and dog park, because we had both on our reservation. At first we were upset at our location, but it was actually great. Everything is clean and well managed and management made sure people kept to the quiet time.

    City of Blackfoot RV Park

Simple spot to stay in Blackfoot

This is for RV parking with electrical hookups for 20 bucks at the airport. 18 hookups and awesome dog park. Also a bike ride away from a very nice park on the lake with lots of play space for kids during the day. No toilets or showers but a simple stay and there is Wal-Mart everything else you need right in town. Blackfoot Wal-Mart does not allow overnight parking. There is water hookup during season. Also free dump station at fire station.

    Bingham County Park Sportsmans Campground

Please do not hunt in my campsite.

Very cool locally managed park with a wide variety of day use activities, in addition to about 20 campsites. It’s huge and has the feeling of being very rural. The American Falls Reservoir is right there and affords visitors a good handful of water sport options, including ice fishing in the winter. There is a boat ramp for boaters and fishermen.

I liked the family feeling of this campground; there is a playground and horseshoe pits, which my kids always enjoy. The way things are laid out, it’s easy for them to walk around and make friends without feeling like they’re intruding on anyone. There are deer and elk in the area that will walk right through your campsite.

But the other thing that will walk through your campsite is hunters. Don’t get me wrong, I get that this is a big duck and goose hunting area and that comes with the territory, but for goodness sake, please do not discharge your firearms within the campground where there are kids playing. There are lots of signs that hunting is not allowed inside the campground, but you know, people don’t always adhere to the rules. It made me incredibly nervous the whole time I was there.

There are three restrooms, which was a little inadequate for the number of people there (especially when you include the day users). Five sites have electric hookups and there is a dump station. I think all sites that I saw had water hookups. An easy, level, paved trail leads out from the campsite and loops around, ADA accessible.

    Pocatello KOA

    Good for a quick stay

Campsites are a little close with no privacy and there are no sewer connections at the individual sites. There are two dump sites on the backside of the store. Pretty much gravel throughout with some grass at the smaller sites. Amenities: kids playground area with grass, a small fenced dog park, horseshoes, picnic table at each site (no fire pits at the pull through sites). Inside the store: pool table, table tennis, and a foosball table. Overall a good clean campsite to hold you over for a day or two.

Guide to American Falls

Dispersed camping options near American Falls, Idaho provide alternatives to established campgrounds for visitors traveling with pets. Located at 4,400 feet elevation in southeastern Idaho, this region experiences hot, dry summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F, while winter brings freezing conditions. The Snake River dominates the landscape, creating both recreational opportunities and seasonal challenges for campers seeking pet-friendly accommodations.

What to Do

Fishing the Snake River: Access prime fishing spots at Massacre Rocks State Park Campground where multiple shore fishing locations attract anglers. "We showed up during the week so it wasn't too packed. Brought our fishing poles and although we didn't catch anything, was well worth it," notes camper Kali D.

Disc golf course: Enjoy the course at Massacre Rocks State Park during your stay. "Bring your disc golf, your fishing pole, and your chair for the evenings!" recommends Phillip C., highlighting the variety of activities available within walking distance of campsites.

Historical exploration: Visit Register Rock near Massacre Rocks to see preserved Oregon Trail history. "Be sure to go up to Register Rock up the road! So much history here," advises Kali D., pointing to educational opportunities beyond the immediate campground area.

Creek cooling: Let dogs splash in the small creeks at Indian Springs Resort and RV. "Our spot backed up to a small running creek filled with fish," notes Kellie, describing an ideal natural feature for pet relief during hot weather.

What Campers Like

Spacious sites with privacy: Many campers appreciate the generous spacing at Willow Bay Resort where sites include large grass areas. "This campground has plenty of trees, and shade and access to the reservoir," notes James B., highlighting the balance of natural coverage and open space.

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms and showers receive consistent praise. "Showers/restrooms clean and great hot water," reports Rachel G. about Massacre Rocks, emphasizing a key comfort factor for campers with extended stays.

Hot springs access: The natural hot spring pool at Indian Springs Resort provides a unique amenity. "We enjoyed the hot spring fed pool. Again, we were the only ones there. The pool is huge!" shares Kellie, noting both the size and occasional low crowds during shoulder seasons.

Natural water features: Streams and river access enhance the camping experience. "Great place to camp and swim. We have a great campground with a fire ring and all of the other things that we need. We have shade, and a small stream running nearby," explains Bill B. about his stay at Indian Springs.

What You Should Know

Access road conditions: Several dispersed camping areas require careful navigation. At Snake River Vista Recreation Site, camper Imerie T. warns, "Definitely a 4x4 or high clearance vehicle only now. It's very rutted and low clearance would drag badly."

Summer heat intensity: Temperatures regularly exceed 95°F during peak summer months, making shade essential for pets. "Camped here on Sunday, we were the only ones there. Beautiful and scenic room for multiple sites, no amenities," notes Chris B., highlighting both the isolation and exposure.

Seasonal water fluctuations: Water levels change dramatically throughout the year, affecting shoreline access. "The water level had returned and the park was enjoyable," reports Richard T. about Willow Bay, indicating the importance of timing your visit when water access matters.

Limited cell service: Coverage varies significantly between campgrounds, with higher elevations typically offering better connectivity. "We had T-Mobile internet," reports Thomas R. about Snake River Vista, providing valuable information for remote workers.

Tips for Camping with Families

Playground access: Sportsmans Park offers recreational amenities that appeal to children. "Nice walking path, fishing & quiet guests," notes Bekki M., highlighting both activities and the peaceful atmosphere families appreciate.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The region supports diverse bird populations and small mammals. "The spring on one side, the river on the other. Lots of birds and I saw two muskrats!" reports Valerie M. about her explorations near Batiste Springs.

Educational history lessons: Incorporate learning with camping by visiting visitor centers. "Must tour Visitor Center! Fascinating history of this area well presented," recommends Phillip C. about Massacre Rocks, suggesting an educational activity suitable for school-aged children.

Swimming options: Natural water features provide cooling recreation during hot months. "We have a great campground with a fire ring and all of the other things that we need. We have shade, and a small stream running nearby," describes Bill B., highlighting features that enhance family camping experiences.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: At Goodenough Creek Campground, arrival timing matters for securing the best spots. "Only one pull through in the first loop most sites are a bit smaller. Beautifully tree covered area," advises Starla R., providing crucial information for larger rigs.

Road steepness considerations: Access roads to elevated campgrounds require adequate power. "The hill up is a bit steep but doable. We drove a 38ft schoolie up here no problem," notes Starla R. about Goodenough Creek, offering reassurance for drivers of larger vehicles.

Full hookup availability: Some campgrounds offer complete services while others provide only partial hookups. "We had a full hookup spot in a giant field area all to ourselves!" reports Kellie about Indian Springs, describing an ideal RV camping scenario with both hookups and space.

Dump station locations: Not all campgrounds with hookups provide on-site dump stations. "The sites at Indian Springs back up to a small running creek," notes a camper, highlighting the natural features rather than the utility access, which requires advance planning for waste management.
