    Massacre Rocks State Park Campground

    Great little place to stay

This beautiful state park is located right off of the freeway about 7 miles outside of American Falls, Idaho. There is a little bit of road noise at the park because of the proximity to the freeway but it wasn't a bother at all. The views of the river are beautiful and the sunset was amazing. There are a lot of trails to walk on here, and since the park is pet friendly our three big dogs walked the trails with us. There is a disc golf course, although we didn't try it out. The camp host was great. The bathrooms were clean, although only half of them are open in the off season. The only draw back we could see is that the spots aren't very spacious, so if you're new at parking your rig, or if you have a really large rig, it could be a tight fit. We were in a 33 ft TT and the pull through spot (17) was plenty long, but kind of narrow. Spot has 50 and 30 amp hook ups as well as water if you camp during the summer-no water in the off season.

    Downata Hot Springs

Great place to stay in the winter

Cold winter months and you need to get away? Wow we rented a cabin three times this last winter. Great little cabins with bathrooms the hot pools were 100 feet away and a heated swimming pool. In the summer time the pool is nice and cold and there are water slides. There is RV and tent sites as well as group sites and 3 small cabins, 3 medium cabins and three large cabins/houses. They also have several yurts. This year they also have covered wagons you can stay in(cute idea on a tent cabin). The staff is friendly and courteous. There is a small cafe and store. There is a restaurant that has a great sirloin dinner if you call ahead to make dinner reservations. Over all a great place to camp summer or winter.

    Massacre Rocks State Park Campground

State Park on the Snake River

    PROS:

    • Easy access to the interstate
    • Host and Visitor Center worker were extremely nice
    • All sites have E/W
    • Sites were private, generous and clean
    • A lot of the sites have great views of the Snake River and canyon wall
    • Great historic area on the Oregon Trail
    • Disc golf
    • Easy access to the River at the sperate boat launch area 1 mile away
    • Day use area away from campground
    • Bathhouse on both upper and lower loop. Showers. (Very dated, but clean)
    • Hubby said to mention there are ample Pokémon opportunities.
    • There are a couple of cabins with great views.

    CONS:

    • Not a lot of shade
    • Closest shopping is American Falls which is very limited. Pocatello is about 40 min away but has great breweries, food, Gander RV (large retail store) and large town stores.
    • Bathhouse is dates and has heavy oxidation in the shower which makes them appear dirty, but they are not.
    • If in the upper loop, you do hear the Interstate noise. Not in the lower loop at all.

    We would definitely stay again

    Lake Walcott State Park Campground

    Waterfront Campsite

This is a State Park with beautiful landscaping and walking trails. There are plenty of RV and tent sites. The lake is absolutely beautiful with views of mountains in the distance. We stayed in space #13 with a lake view. The space had its own bbq grill, fire pit, picnic table and full hook ups. The park was about 1/3 full and quiet. We definitely want to go back. We highly recommend, especially if you want to include boating or fishing.

    Snow

Took the long drive up and arrived at the campground at night. Didn’t see the snow and almost got stuck. Currently (5/10/24) there is snow blocking the entrance and impassible.

    Massacre Rocks State Park Campground

    Great Stopover

Despite living under 3 hours from here, we had never visited. We came during the off-season. No host, only two other campers there, and no tag on our reserved site but it was empty. The visitor center was closed. Bathrooms and showers were very clean. You definitely want a lower loop site to get away from the freeway noise, plus you will have more shade during peak summer heat. I think we had the best campsite (#31) for an RV,  a pull-through that has a nice view of the river and big rocks. Be aware that you have to go down a steep set of steps to the picnic table and fire ring, though. Site 25, a back-in, looked like a great one for tent camping with more privacy. All sites have electricity and water, and there is a free dump station. Most of the other sites bordering the river look good too. There are many great trails through the rock formations plus a trail along the river, and there is a disc golf course here. If you do have to stay in the upper loop, sites 13 & 14 looked best.

    2nd Cabin Only Bigger

We had returned but had got a cabin with a loft. There are only 3 loft cabins. They are super cozy, and come with a full kitchen. The loft above had 2 twin beds, the main floor had a full size bed, futon, closet, full kitchen and a bathroom with both shower and tub. Close walking distance to the hot pools and restaurant. The 3 of us were comfortable and not felt like we were in a tiny space.

    Lava Hot Springs West KOA

    Not camping, but still great

Don’t get me wrong. This is not camping. But it’s the perfect spot if you want to be around all the fun action of Lava Hot Springs. You’re walking distance to the river, restaurants, the pool and all the fun stuff in Lava. We were on site #1 which is by the playground and dog park, because we had both on our reservation. At first we were upset at our location, but it was actually great. Everything is clean and well managed and management made sure people kept to the quiet time.

What to do

Sites have electric and water and there is a dump station," notes Ashley M. about the park's educational opportunities.

Fishing: The Snake River provides good fishing access at multiple campgrounds. Massacre Rocks State Park Campground offers several fishing spots along the water. As Betty G. mentions, "Great fishing in the Snake River," making this activity accessible directly from campsites.

Disc golf: Several campgrounds offer disc golf courses for visitors looking for recreational activities. What campers like

Hot spring pools: Indian Springs Resort and RV offers a vintage hot spring swimming pool on site. Scott B. describes it as "fantastic although entry to the pool is not included in your camping fee so be prepared to pay extra to get in the pool but totally worth it."

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain high cleanliness standards. "Showers/restrooms clean and great hot water. Good place to ride bikes," says Rachel G. about Massacre Rocks, while another visitor notes the "clean bathrooms and showers" at Mary's Campground.

Creek-side camping: Several sites offer water features beyond the main attractions. At Indian Springs, one camper reported, "We were given a full hookup spot in a giant field area all to ourselves! Our spot backed up to a small running creek filled with fish."

What you should know

Train noise: Some campgrounds experience railroad disruptions. At Lower Portneuf Campground, "The train runs by and must blast the safety horn. Latest was 11:30pm, earlier was 5am," warns Evan D., while another camper counted "about 8 trains coming through between 1am-6am."

Seasonal considerations: Many campgrounds have limited operating seasons. The Indian Springs Resort operates from April 1 to October 31, while Lava Hot Springs West KOA runs from May 5 to October 31.

Insects: Some areas experience significant insect activity. One camper at Lake Walcott noted, "There were non-stinging flying insects all up in our face and flying up our nose. We got a few Mosquito bites but nothing above normal for a summer evening—the insects go away if you start a smoky fire."

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature playground facilities. At Downata Hot Springs, families appreciate the water slides and hot pools, with Jennifer H. noting it's "Fun for kids, groups, families" and offering "Great groups there during our stay, easy to get around."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose sites carefully for adequate space and level ground. At Indian Springs, one RVer noted, "Our site was not the best. Big ruts, we had to level quite a bit, 120 amp didn't work. But they were cleaning up getting ready for season."

Yurt camping options: For RVers looking for alternative accommodations, yurt camping near American Falls, Idaho offers comfortable options. Lava Hot Springs West KOA provides yurts within walking distance to amenities. "This campground is within walking distance to the hot pools, store, and places to eat," mentions Shani C., making yurt camping in American Falls, Idaho convenient for those without RVs.

Full hookup availability: Availability varies by campground. Downata Hot Springs campers note "No sewer, electricity and water at most sites," while Indian Springs Resort has "Spacious, full facilities" according to Edward R.
