Best Campgrounds near White Plains, GA

Campgrounds near White Plains, Georgia include a variety of options centered around Lake Oconee and surrounding state parks. A.H. Stephens State Park Campground offers tent sites, RV hookups, cabins, and yurts approximately 5 miles from White Plains. Several Georgia Power-managed recreation areas like Lawrence Shoals Campground and Old Salem Park Campground provide waterfront camping with electric and water hookups. The region features both developed campgrounds with full amenities and more secluded sites for those seeking a quieter experience. Most campgrounds in the area accommodate both tent and RV camping, with several offering cabin rentals for those preferring more comfort.

Camping is available year-round at many locations, though some campgrounds like Hamburg State Park operate seasonally from March through November. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially for waterfront sites which fill quickly during summer months. One camper noted, "This campground is all about the lake. Not just because it's on a lake, but because with no real trails or other sites to see in the nearby area, it's definitely this park's main focus." Road access is generally good with paved roads leading to most developed campgrounds. Cell service can be spotty in some areas, particularly at A.H. Stephens State Park. Weather conditions are typically mild with hot, humid summers and mild winters, making spring and fall ideal for camping.

Lakefront sites receive consistently high ratings from visitors, with many campgrounds offering direct water access for fishing, swimming, and boating. A reviewer of Lawrence Shoals Campground mentioned, "The Georgia Power park is amazing, the hosts were great and the park was very clean. There is a boat ramp, several docks, pavilions, and a beach." Bathroom facilities vary in quality and age across different campgrounds, with Georgia Power parks generally receiving praise for cleanliness. Most developed campgrounds provide showers, flush toilets, and laundry facilities. Wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant, with deer commonly seen at several campgrounds, particularly at BoMax Ranch and Retreat. Campers seeking more privacy should consider the tent-only walk-in sites at Mistletoe State Park, which offer secluded waterfront locations on a peninsula jutting into the lake.

    Wildwood County Park

Recreation is the name of the game

I would caution those who arrive on a weekend and expect a quiet respite. It is wall to wall huge RV’s and trailers. People are here with boats, golf carts, big outside TV’s and LOUD music that went on until 9:45 at night (camp hosts finally shut down the party scene). Many groups were clearly gathering for a good time. Weekdays may be an entirely different experience. That being said, the bathrooms were outstanding. Great showers (complete with shelves and hooks), and even heated. No complaints here.

Petersburg - J Strom Thurmond Lake

    Overnight stay

We needed a last minute site for an overnight stay only. Used Dyrt app and found a few sites available. Not able to make reservations online at recreation.gov, so we pulled into the campground hoping one was still available. The gatehouse attendant confirmed there were a few sites available, but she said that the camp staff was not allowed to register a new camp guest or take payment. She directed us to a phone number so we pulled over and spoke to an agent by phone. We only needed one night as we were just using this as a stopover on our way home, but there is a minimum of two nights. We were tired & not willing to drive to another campground, so we paid for the 2 nights. We had site #93 which is not waterfront. More than enough room on gravel pad for our van. Be careful of poison ivy at back of site beyond the pad. A bit of a walk to the restroom. It was ok. Basically clean but needs some general upkeep. Campground gates are locked from 10pm to 7am, but campers are given a code in case they need to go in/out at other hours.

Winfield - J Strom Thurmond Lake

Winfield waterfront campground is open again...

Winfield Campground is open, upon arrival we were told that after 2+ years closed they are finally open again.

This COE park is beautiful, has approximately 80 site of which about 90% of them are lake front. Most sites are VERY large and provide a decent amount of privacy.

Each site has a picnic table, fire ring/grill combo, as well as a separate standing grill and food preparation table. All have electric/water hookups, no sewer, but there is a dump station.

The bathhouses are slightly dated but during our stay were cleaned well daily.

There is also a boat ramp and dock/fishing pier, playground, and unstaffed swimming beach. (All located near sites numbered in the 70's)

    Skulls Shoals Park & Campground

    Beautiful Property

I stayed here during the flame festival and camped in a tent! Even with lots of people at the event the trash on the property was so well maintained you wouldn’t know it was going on. Great food at the concession stand and the bath houses were TOP TIER. I would totally come back for my own stay anytime.

    Great campground!

This is our favorite campground on Lake Oconee! The bathrooms are always clean as well as the rest of the campground. It is peaceful, well-kept, and surrounded by beautiful nature. The perfect place to relax and unwind. We can’t wait to come back!

Petersburg - J Strom Thurmond Lake

    Beautifully Spacious Sites!

We initially booked this campground because the nearby state park was full. And we are so glad that it was! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this park. All of the sites are spacious and the lake is beautiful. Our site was across the street from the bathhouse (which was nice and clean) with a trail up the hill, but it is like your own private trail since the parking lot is around the corner and everyone just goes in that way. The trail from the site down to the lake is a bit of a hike in the woods and downhill, but nothing we couldn't do. It would probably be easiest to take your canoe or kayak down to the boat dock a few sites down to put in and paddle to the beach at the site. We were able to drag our inflatables down and set up at the beach. We love it here and are thrilled it is open again. We will definitely be planning more trips to this campground.

    Broad River Campground

    One of my favorite campsites

I am an avid sportsman. Both hunting and fishing opportunities are very good here.

Guide to White Plains

Camping sites near White Plains, Georgia offer diverse terrain options around Lake Oconee and Clark's Hill Reservoir. The area sits at approximately 500-600 feet elevation with distinct seasonal patterns, including foggy spring mornings and cool fall nights. Most campsites remain accessible year-round, though water levels fluctuate seasonally, impacting shoreline access at waterfront locations.

What to do

**Fishing opportunities: Access premium bass fishing at Lawrence Shoals Campground where the lake attracts serious anglers year-round. "The lake is very large and welcomes boaters of any kind, including jet skis. There is a small swimming beach, of course no dogs allowed but if you walk around the edge of the lake, you can find plenty of spots to take a splash with your pup," notes one camper.

**Historical exploration: Visit the museum at A. H. Stephens State Park Campground to learn about Civil War history. A visitor explains, "The park is the home of the VP of the Confederacy and features his home and Civil War artifacts (check for open hours). Ask camp host for tour of CCC built fire tower."

**Fall foliage viewing: Experience autumn colors at waterfront sites from mid-October through November. "Autumn is beautiful but we were probably a week or two early for the full color change of the trees. The weather was a little warm for Oct./Nov. but we're from Florida and anything cooler and less humid is welcome," reports a Lawrence Shoals visitor.

What campers like

**Spacious campsites: Mistletoe State Park Campground offers well-separated sites that provide privacy. "We really like campgrounds that have a lot of room, space between each site and easy sites to get in to. AH Stephen's fits that bill! Comfort station was very clean, hosts available if needed and the campground wasn't overly packed with campers on top of each other."

**Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain exceptionally clean bathhouses, with Hamburg State Park Campground receiving high marks. "Wonderful campgrounds. Very clean and well kept. New clean bath facilities. Almost all sites are in the water with half shaded. Highly recommend!"

**Waterfront access: Most sites at Hamburg State Park provide direct lake access. "All most all sites are literally right on the lake. Extremely quite and literally in the middle of nowhere. If you want to rest and relax in solitude, this is you place."

What you should know

**Cell service limitations: Reception varies significantly between camping areas. "The park located in small town. It is very quite, nothing is nearby. Walmart is 33 miles away, so you should stock up before camping there. No WiFi," notes a camper at A.H. Stephens State Park.

**Seasonal insect activity: Prepare for ants, particularly at Old Salem Park Campground. "Spray WELL for ants as they are abundant we had no issues but our neighbors needed some assistance in mitigation," advises one visitor. Another adds, "Nice amenities bathrooms very nice kept clean we stayed at 53 real flat easy set up wish we would have stay at a site on the water because we like to bank fish be prepared for the ants!"

**Limited hiking options: The region focuses primarily on lake activities with minimal trail networks. "This campground is all about the lake. Not just because its on a lake, but because with no real trails or other sites to see in the near by area its definitely this parks main focus."

Tips for camping with families

**Beach activities: North Shore Landing offers excellent swimming options for children. "The campground is clean, quiet and right on beautiful Lake Oconee. It has it's own private little beach, boat slips which you can rent for your boat, a lots of fun for the kids."

**Holiday events: Several parks host seasonal activities. A visitor to A.H. Stephens notes, "We stopped here for one night in December, passing through. The park had a beautiful Christmas light display with hot chocolate and a Christmas movie playing on a big screen."

**Wildlife viewing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds offer chances to spot deer and other wildlife. "We stayed at the esquirion site which was large and had stables. Beautiful place and clean... Kind of tight and up hill a little getting in and out," reports a visitor about the equestrian camping area at A.H. Stephens.

Tips from RVers

**Leveling requirements: Pack leveling blocks for certain sites. "While the tropical storm weather cut our trip to AH Stephens Historic Park we still very much enjoyed our visit. Site 12 was a very nice straight site with the picnic table and fire ring down a few steps off the back of the main pad. Both sites were nicely graveled and level."

**Site selection strategy: Choose carefully when booking at Oconee Springs County Park. "The campground was very difficult to park in, as the spaces were right on top of each other. There's not much privacy as you're right next to the other person (which is fine if you're camping with friends)."

**Dump station logistics: Verify dump station locations before arrival. "The only thing that may be lacking are hooks to hang your towels. If I could give it 10 stars, I would," mentions a visitor to Lawrence Shoals commenting on the otherwise excellent facilities.
