Best RV Parks & Resorts near Oakwood, GA

Several RV parks near Oakwood, Georgia provide varied accommodations for recreational vehicles. Wesley Oaks RV Park in Cumming features full hookup sites with 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections year-round. Twin Lakes RV Park accommodates both standard RVs and larger rigs with full hookups and picnic tables at each site. "If you are staying a week or longer this is the park to stay. Less than a mile to Ga 400 at Exit 13. Short drive to Downtown Cumming and Lake Lanier," noted one visitor about Wesley Oaks. Georgia RV Park in Commerce supports big rigs with 50-amp service, offering water, electric, and sewer hookups alongside amenities like showers, toilets, and an on-site market.

Reservations are recommended for most RV parks in the area, particularly during peak seasons and holidays. Lake Lanier access points are available near several parks, with many visitors noting the proximity to water recreation as a key benefit. A recent review warned about tight turning areas: "After parking our 40ft 5th wheel, we realized where we needed to turn around was going to be tight... It was so tight that the 5th wheel was only 1 inch from hitting the cab and the axels on the RV were in a bind." Most parks maintain sanitary dump stations for guests, though specific sites with these amenities vary by location. Pets are generally allowed throughout area campgrounds, though restrictions may apply in certain common areas or beach locations.

    Shoal Creek Campground

Beautiful lake front AND lake view camping spots; friendly staff

This was our first RV camping experience -- testing out a new pop-up camper during a two (2) night stay. Reservations were made through Campspot -- about $120 with fees. Communication with the main number for the campground went through the Margaritaville Campground nearby. Separate direct lines to the camp office and security were provided after arrival. Overall communication was good with both, and the staff were always polite.

We skipped our first night reservation due to high winds. We had concerns about damaging the pop-up roof during first-time setup. We decided, instead, to visit the campsite we'd reserved and pick up our paperwork. Site 56 was our first choice, and we were NOT happy with it. I selected the wrong size on the Campspot website -- a 20' campsite. It was not big enough to park both the camper AND the tow vehicle, AND the camper would've been facing away from the lake anyway with water and electrical hookups.

The next morning, we called to arrange for a different site. The camp office was very accommodating and blocked off four (4) available sites to choose from. We moved to site 55, which was a large circular pull through. Probably too big for our pop-up camper, but also probably too close to trees for a larger trailer or even a 5th wheel. The campsite was large, with the picnic table, fire ring and sand pit away from the camper. There was lots of room to set up and enjoy the beautiful lake views.

Electric and water hookups worked just fine. The camp office lent a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter free of charge. We had no issues with either service. The showers and bathrooms were about 2-3 sites down and up the road from 55, and they were reasonably clean for what they were.

I WAS disappointed that the main gate was broken, and the key code locks on the showers and bathrooms were duct taped shut. However, I did not feel that the campground was all that insecure, and there did not appear to be a lot of traffic coming through. Security DID come through overnight on Sunday morning -- probably due to some noise at 1-2 of the campsites across the cove from ours. Things quieted down after. The camp host was cleaning bathrooms on Sunday morning, and he was very polite when we talked. I saw him regularly coming through to check on campsites and clean up.

Overall, we liked this campground and will be going back. I will likely request to scout out some different sites in person before selecting one, as I don't want to be in a position to have to give up my spot when it's very busy.

    Shady Grove Campground

    Great lakefront spot

We stayed at site #82 pull through. $30/night. 30' hybrid travel trailer. We will come back here again

    Pros:

    • easy to level trailer
    • excellent lakefront view (many of the sites have lakefront views)
    • private with plenty of tree cover
    • quiet
    • large site area
    • friendly gate person
    • good cell reception with t-mobile
    • clean restrooms
    • good water pressure

    Cons:

    • 30 amp issues on pole with EMS readings. 50 amp was fine
    • steep hill to get to the lake

Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground

    One of the BEST!

We were back at HLC this past weekend and, as always, top-notch park! We have tent camped for several years but recently upgraded to a new (to us) pop up and we had a blast!

We camped at site 26 (one of the newer sites) and it had full hookup (our PUP does not have a bathroom but does have a galley). The site has electric (50 amp and 30 amp service) as well as free cable TV!!

The sites at HLC are well spaced and the bath houses are spotless!!

The park staff is amazing and the camp hosts are always cleaning up and are available if you need anything!

HLC is our go-to spot for a weekend getaway because of the above-mentioned reasons and it is close to home!!

    Twin Lakes RV Park

A place to park with no bath, no amenities and mostly long term residents

The 5 star reviews are perplexing. We're not new to RVing and have stayed in plenty of lovely mom& pop parks. This is a family owned campground, but it is basically a parking lot with hookups for people who live there long term. Our site was on the side of a road about 50 yards away from the Dump Station. It was referred to as a premium, pull through rather than what it is... a pull to the side of the road. There was no grass or picnic table. I'll post pictures that show the condition of our site and how close the spots are to one another. The pictures online and YouTube videos of this park are very deceiving. The grassy areas beside and between the lakes can only be accessed by walking though other camper's sites.

** Use caution navigating the park because the roads at the back have no way to turn around if you get back there.

    Tallulah Gorge State Park Campground

    Incredible place to hike

Took my boys after studying the 7 Natural wonders of GA and this gorge is one of them. Did not disappoint. The hike to the bottom is not for the faint of heart. And the steps back up will challenge the most fit among us. But the views and experience is well worth the pain. Campground while being big rig friendly is a little tight ( we have a 42ft motorhome). If your large try to book sites 34 or 35 pull through. No sewers, but easy to use dump station next to the exit. Make sure you add this stop to your Must see list

Watson Mill Bridge State Park Campground

    Great little state park

Real friendly staff. Nicely laid out, but I guess could be challenging for really big rigs. W & E with dump station and pretty good facilities

Cell coverage a little challenging but managed to get enough download for Visible to stream Netflix. Too many trees to break out Starlink

    Trails are a fun walk.

Empty camp ground host side byhind 47 cannot be used unless site 47 is emprty due to sloping road. One single use dump station. One campground host presently in the park- their site was not marked. Appears that most sites are back-in and set sideways to a hillside and lakefront leaving very little level space for chairs. Fire rings are frequently located 12-20 feet away from picnic table and 3 to 9 feet below site level on a slope. Reservation Software used by office was down upon Saturday arrival with no IT help until Monday- two days away leaving office staff frustrated and using their own phone to access the reservation system customers use instead of management side of software. Staff stated it goes down frequently with no IT support on weekends. Six bathhouses in park. Bathhouse nearest beach closed awaiting replacement of fixtures after renovation. Shower has outdated fixtures- several shower heads had significant mineral deposits restricting flow. Men's side closed at another bathhouse. Many shower stalls had no hook or fixture to hang a towel or clothing. Several showers had broken shower valves making them unusable. Stayed 9 nights and did not see anyone working on bathhouses. Beach area parking is limited to 6 or 7 spaces and one handicap space however, there is a larger parking lot a little further away. Bathhouse showers have a pull string valve next to the shower head that had to be held down to get water with many strings broken, missing and too short to allow shorter people, children, or handicaped wheel-chair use. Some sites have precarious/dangerous sloping driveways for RVs to get into. Newly installed sites are near completion but they make sites very close together. Many sites do not have a fire pit and many do not have a grill. Many sites arer too small to park a second vhicle even if the camper is small. Parking on dirt or grass is prohibited by rules but appears to be selectively enforced. The campground has a boat ramp and reasonably large parking area. Extra careful site selection is warranted. Four docks in River Forks Park. Firewood is available at the office. CHECK-IN: 01:00 PM CHECK-OUT: 12:00 PM RIG: 42ft- 17,000 lb 5th Wheel"

    Don Carter State Park Campground

Love the view from our site 13

Really nice state park located at north end of Lake Lanier. Site 13 was great. Had woods and lake view. Paved pull through site with gravel pad for picnic and fire pit area. Plenty of room for camper, cars and boat trailer. Bathroom facilities were extremely clean, well lighted, no spiders or bugs, etc. Enjoyed fishing and kayaking. Nice beach and swim area, boat docks and 2 boat launch sites, playground, etc. Saw lots of deer and enjoyed walking some of the trails. Will plan a trip in cooler weather fall or spring. Camp hosts were helpful and visitor center staff were very nice. Great cell service too.

Guide to Oakwood

RV sites near Oakwood, Georgia offer camping options within 30-60 minutes of Lake Lanier and the North Georgia mountains. The area sits at approximately 1,200 feet elevation with a mild subtropical climate featuring humid summers and moderate winters. Most campgrounds remain open year-round with peak season running April through October when temperatures range from 70-90°F.

What to Do

Lake recreation access: Twin Lakes RV Park features lake views with swinging seats overlooking the water. "They have several swings overlooking the lake for a very relaxing view. You're allowed to fish in the lake, but no swimming or kayaking," notes a visitor who appreciated the peaceful setting.

Hiking opportunities: Currahee RV Park offers easy access to mountain trails. "5 mins from Currahee Mountain and 10 mins from downtown Toccoa," mentions a recent visitor, making it convenient for day hikes.

Downtown excursions: Nearby towns provide shopping and dining options. "We went during the Ellijay apple festival, so they were busy, but the campground was great!" explains a Diamond Lure Campground guest who enjoyed combining camping with local festivals.

What Campers Like

Clean facilities: Pine Lake RV Campground receives praise for maintenance. "The bathhouse & laundry facilities are super clean! It's quiet & well taken care of property," reports a camper who stayed in a pull-through site.

Level sites: RVers appreciate concrete pads at Currahee RV Park. "Nice concrete pads in a former pasture. Not a lot of shade for most sites," notes one visitor, highlighting the ease of setup despite limited tree cover.

Pet amenities: Some resorts cater specifically to dogs. "They have things for dogs! (Dog bath, dog beach, dog park, etc). I'd recommend this place 1,000 times over!!!" enthuses a Diamond Lure visitor who brought their pets along.

What You Should Know

Reservation requirements: Most parks need advance booking, especially during peak times. "We stopped here as an overnight on our way to our final destination. They were very hospitable and put us into an easy pull through site," explains a Pine Lake RV visitor who planned ahead.

Campground styles: RV accommodations range from basic to resort-style. At Talona Ridge RV Resort, "There are 3 levels/areas to this CG with the more premier sites on the top level however the downfall is if there's wind there's no wind block."

Site selection considerations: Some parks assign sites rather than letting you choose. "You do not get to pick your site. You get to pick what style of site but not the exact site," explains a Talona Ridge visitor, recommending communicating your specific needs.

Tips for Camping with Families

Age restrictions: Check campground policies before booking. "Great little campground just minutes from Helen GA. Super clean and quiet, ADULTS ONLY," notes a Creekwood Resort visitor, highlighting that not all parks welcome children.

Entertainment options: Some campgrounds offer minimal recreation for kids. A Pine Lake camper observed, "If you're traveling with kids though-there's not much to do other than bike through campground or fish in the pond. But locally there are parks & playgrounds."

Transportation needs: Larger resorts may require additional planning. At Margaritaville, "You will have to drive around the resort or rent a golf cart. They also have a tram from rv resort to water park," explains a visitor, noting the $20 one-time vehicle entry fee.

Tips from RVers

Navigation challenges: Some campgrounds have tight turns. A Twin Lakes visitor warns, "Use caution navigating the park because the roads at the back have no way to turn around if you get back there."

Site length considerations: Verify that your RV will fit comfortably. "Our site (12) was an easy pull through right by an exit," reports a Pine Lake camper who appreciated the convenience for a shorter stay.

Payment policies: Check accepted payment methods in advance. Twin Lakes RV Park accepts limited payment types: "Just FYI they only take cash or check payments," notes a visitor who stayed over Memorial Day weekend.
