Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Fairburn, GA

Sweetwater Creek State Park Campground offers pet-friendly tent sites and yurts in a wooded setting on the lake. Dogs must be leashed at all times while on park trails and within the camping area. The park's five walk-in tent sites provide a quiet experience away from RVs, with site 1 and 2 being preferred options for privacy. Stone Mountain Park Campground also welcomes pets at its tent, RV, cabin, and yurt accommodations with convenient trash facilities and well-maintained grounds. Some areas attract large family groups, so campers seeking quiet should request more isolated sites. The campground features full hookups for RVs and clean, accessible restrooms with showers.

Multiple hiking trails accommodate leashed dogs throughout the Fairburn area, with Sweetwater Creek's paths following the shoals and providing access to Civil War mill ruins. The trails are well-maintained though can be challenging in spots with rocks to navigate. Tent campers should bring a wagon for the walk-in sites at Sweetwater Creek, as parking is not permitted directly at campsites. Water access is available for dogs at several parks, though swimming is typically prohibited for both humans and pets. Cell reception remains strong throughout most campgrounds due to proximity to Atlanta, allowing campers to easily research nearby veterinary services if needed. Visitors should note that South Oaks RV & Mobile Home Park no longer accepts nightly stays, operating as a long-term facility only.

    Pine Mountain Camp Ground

Well maintained roads. Large sites with choice of full sun or shade site.

Staff is great and his campground allows campfires. Pet friendly with two dog parks. Great pool and has cabins and yurts to reserve. Less than three miles from Callaway Gardens and FDR Park. Town of Pine Mountain...two street lights...very quaint sidewalk shops! This place is a hidden treasure.

    Stone Mountain Park Campground

So close to me and I love it.

Lived in Georgia my whole life and yet my first time to Stone Mountain was literally three years ago. Now we have an annual pass and go all the time. This place is world renowned for its fireworks and laser show but you have to go off the pavement to truly fall in love with Stone Mountain! This place is great for everyone. I mean everyone, from free runners to hikers and all you folk that like to “camp” in your RVs. Visit this place anytime of year and you will not be disappointed. Apparently it’s rated #1 as the best place to camp in Georgia. I’m more into the nature only kind of camping but that’s not everyone’s cup a tea. Stone Mountain has something for everyone.

    Indian Springs

    Nice campground - Site 19

1st time for us to Indian Springs. Very clean and well maintained. Site 19 was on a less populated loop and a long stretch of woods on the "driver" side thus no neighbors.  Site was very easy to back into.

We stayed in March, so when the leaves are off the trees, you can see the lake. Kinda doubtful you would during the summer. Gray water dump is very close. Bathhouse was about a 2 minute walk, but didn't use it.

I'd stay on this section again, but maybe across the street. or preferably down by the water.  There's a short drop off behind the fence by the fire ring, that the dog keeps trying to go down and getting stuck - imagine little ones may love that area.

The town of Flovilla is right outside the gates, with  some shops and a nice restaurant. Dollar General is 5 mins away. Dauset Trails Nature Preserve is about 15 minutes away, but note pets aren't allowed. High Falls State park is about 15 minutes away with good hiking trails. Plus boat, and paddle board rentals.

    Stone Mountain Park Campground

Awesome grounds with basic to full-hookups. Pet friendly.

Awesome grounds in a family and pet friendly atmosphere. Neighbors were kind and helpful. Very quiet and peaceful time. Walking the grounds was nice and hilly. There’s also trails in between areas and around the campground. If you like the water, bring your trunks, kayaks, and poles.

    Wesley Oaks RV Park

    Expensive + additonal fees

925 per month regardless of class size. 400 dollar security deposit plus a 50 dollar pet rent every month. Apartments charge less for security deposits+ pet rent (especially this high!) is something I’ve yet to hear of for an RV park. For a small 30 amp camper van, it’s just not justifiable to pay the same price as a big rig.

Red Top Mountain State Park Campground

    Easy from Atlanta

Red Red Top is one of my favorite spots when I need a quick Wilderness cat away from the city. It is always well taken care of, and the sites have easy access to the lake which is nice for sunrise, sunset and relaxing in a hammock. The sites are clean and easy to find, and the campground is only accessible with an access code in the evenings.

COE Allatoona Lake Old Highway 41 No 3 Campground

    Noisy

Old Hwy 41 No 3 Campground is a COE campground on Lake Allatoona, about an hour North of Atlanta. The campground is only open May till September. There are about 50 sites, most had water and 30/50 amp electricity, a few with sewer. There are some lake front sites that appear larger, and are more expensive. Basic water/electric sites are $28/night, full hook-ups are $36, Lakefront are $64/night. Fire rings, picnic tables are provided, a playground and a bathroom/shower building. There is a laundry room, Also a dump station. They only allow 2 pets per site. This is a boating/fishing campground so there is a boat ramp. It is close to I-75 and US 41, but it is in the woods, so some of the highway noise is muffled, only some! There is also an entrance station which provides some security! The gate is open from 7 AM until 10:30 PM. NO ONE gets in after hours!

Guide to Fairburn

Camping near Fairburn offers access to the Chattahoochee River watershed with elevations ranging from 700-1,200 feet. The region has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers reaching 90°F and mild winters rarely dropping below freezing. Fall camping typically features moderate temperatures and colorful foliage along riverbanks and forest trails.

What to Do

Historic ruins exploration: At Sweetwater Creek State Park, the Manchester Mill ruins provide a glimpse into Georgia's industrial past. "Make sure you go see Manchester Mill Ruins," notes Mike K., who visited the park and found it offers "great fishing on three lakes" as well.

Water activities: While swimming is restricted in many areas, boating and fishing opportunities exist throughout the region. At Stone Mountain Park Campground, visitors can enjoy lakeside recreation. Susan K. shares, "My husband and son enjoyed fishing and paddle boarding right behind our site. There was a lot to see and do at Stone Mountain."

Hiking trails: The region offers trails suitable for various skill levels, from easy walks to more challenging terrain. At Chattahoochee Bend State Park Campground, Kayla S. notes the trails are "a mixture of trails and old gravel roads. There is a large loop to see everything that is intersected by shorter cross trails."

What Campers Like

Platform camping: For a unique tent camping experience, Chattahoochee Bend offers elevated platforms. Jessica D. describes them as "super nice. Short walk into the sites, right beside a river. Not much privacy between platforms but every time we have been it hasn't been full or crowded."

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds in the area maintain excellent bathroom facilities. At Red Top Mountain State Park Campground, campers appreciate the well-maintained amenities. One reviewer noted the bathrooms were "cleaner than a Publix bathroom. Kid friendly."

Proximity to Atlanta: The area's location makes it ideal for quick getaways from the city. Tyler B. who stayed at Sweetwater Creek shares, "I stopped into Atlanta for a few nights and wanted a covid-safe accommodations and a spot to hike and shoot photography. Sweetwater Creek camping was sort of primitive camping in a city setting."

What You Should Know

Limited tent sites: Popular parks have relatively few tent-specific sites. Virginia W. who camped at Sweetwater Creek noted: "Beautiful campground with great hiking. I wish there were more tent sites. Very friendly staff."

Highway noise: Despite natural settings, some campgrounds experience traffic noise. At Red Top Mountain, Jeff E. cautions: "If you are in a tent... you will hear I-75 traffic all night so keep in mind, that while it looks like country, you are not deep in nature... the drone of the highway will remind you."

Site selection importance: Choosing the right site impacts your experience. At McIntosh Reserve Park, Buddy G. mentions "No site specific reservations, right on the chattahoochee, historical sites on the drive in. Great place for family, splash pad in the park."

Tips for Camping with Families

Playground access: Several parks feature play areas for children. Joey P. mentions about Chattahoochee Bend: "2 playgrounds were open. Playgrounds are brand new or at least they look brand new. I am 225 lbs and I played on all the equipment with my daughter."

Water features: While river swimming is often prohibited, some parks offer alternatives. At High Falls State Park Campground, Tatiana notes "swimming is not allowed but there is a pool, it cost $5 person. Our campsite was very private and spacious."

Educational opportunities: Many parks provide junior ranger programs and historical sites. At McIntosh Reserve, DeWayne H. shares, "for those that are into Geocashing, there are a few you could find here. This place has some nice trails and plenty of pavilions for large groups."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Be prepared to level your RV at certain sites. Susan K. from Stone Mountain Park advises, "The only downfall was that the trailer needed a lot of leveling. But it was totally worth it."

Road conditions: Some campgrounds have deteriorating roads. Brock D. notes about Red Top Mountain: "Heavily wooded sites that are not well maintained. Very narrow roads in the campground with lots of pot holes. Not the easiest state park to pull a travel trailer in."

Full hookup availability: While some parks offer complete services, others have limitations. Jon R. who stayed at High Falls shares, "Plenty of space between the sites and nice trails to go walking on," though he mentions "bathrooms were cleanish. Just needed a little bit of detailed cleaning."
