    Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park

    Anything but stark...

Part of the Starkey Wilderness Preservethis location is full of multi use trails, has primitive cabin rentals (no electric) and tent camping available. Front country (car camping) and back country camping (hike in only). There are specific equestrian camping sites as well.

Cabins are pretty close to each other. All sites need to be reserved.Tent, cabin, shelter and pavilion reservations: Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, (727) 834-3247. Picnic tables and fire pits are provided. Pavilions are also available to rent and they take reservations for large groups as well.

We chose car camping for our visit to check the place out. A favorite for hiking and biking. This place has gotten busier as development has been growing steadily over the years. Many of the trails are without shade and the recent fire season hit the back part of the tract pretty hard (Spring 2017) but you would not see any signs of this unless you hiked out the furthest trails from entrance.

Bring your bikes, hiking shoes, horses, or telescopes. Birders bring your binoculars! Over 150 species call Starkey home either full or part time. There is something here for everyone.

As always in Florida bring bug spray, sunblock, hat, and please leave no trace!

Palmetto Ridge Campground — Myakka River State Park

    Enormous park

I’m staying in the Palmetto Ridge loop which is the only paved loop & I think the only one w/sewer. The Big Flats & Old Prairie loops are gravel road, tight, no privacy & very small sites like for popups, vans or small campers. The Palmetto Ridge pull thrus are gigantic. I would say the vegetation gives semi privacy but they aren’t on top of each other so it’s not like you’re looking right at your neighbor. There is a picnic table & a fire ring. Gravel sites but pretty level. My site was 50 amp. Not sure how many are. Bath house & laundry facility appears clean. Pet friendly. The outpost is literally like 3 miles into the park down from the entrance & Palmetto loop. The store was nice & there was a food truck. It was a little spendy but good food. The river was low so the kayak rental & boat tours were shut down. Tons of great hiking & even some elevated bridges for site seeing. Tons of gators, birds, deer etc. There is also a scenic drive in the park, a “fisherman’s loop” & a few picnic areas. There are cabins to rent but I didn’t see them. Also never saw a playground if you have kids. Very dark & quiet at night.

    Canoe Outpost Little Manatee River

Decent spot. If you want privacy and primitive, it’s not the spot

So I grew up camping a lot and like to be more primitive/ private. The campsites are close together, with little privacy. It’s also located right off the highway, so you get all the noise. All day and all night.

Now, for canoe and kayak trips, I guess it’s a good spot. There’s a lot of folk that come just for that. The staff is very friendly. They drive around maybe once a couple of hours. They are pet friendly. A long as your pup isn’t running around the whole property. I’m pretty sure every site has water and electricity.

    St. Petersburg-Madeira Beach KOA Holiday

Natural Spot Hidden in the City

I recently had a wonderful experience at the St. Petersburg/Madeira Beach KOA Holiday, and I’m excited to share my positive review! I’ve hosted friends in their Deluxe Cabins before, and they were thoroughly impressed. The cabins were equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay—fresh linens, a full kitchen, and even a private patio with a grill and fire ring. And they had a great view of the lush mangrove lined Long Bayou.

They loved the blend of cozy and convenient, making their getaway truly enjoyable. At the end of the road driving out of this campground is a great restaurant called Doe Doe's that makes a delicious homestyle breakfast if you don't want to cook it yourself.

Wanting to be close to them I opted for one of the small tent sites at the end of the park where I car camped in my Subaru Outback. It was a peaceful and charming spot, perfect for a relaxing camping experience - and away from more of the centrally located activities that people camping with children enjoy.

Overall, the amenities were top-notch, including the heated outdoor pool, bike and kayak rentals, and clean and large facilities. They have something called KampK9 which is a fenced in dog park area. Less than a mile away is Bay Pines Park which is nice to jog or ride your bike through and there is also a super Walmart nearby so you can stock up for your drive to the next campground. You also have easy access to the Gulf Coast's stunning beaches and the scenic Pinellas Trail.

Driving on the main road, and seeing the somewhat industrial area you pass through on your way down the small side street to this campground, you wouldn't expect much - but this KOA has been there for decades and is one of the nicest family campgrounds in the middle of a city I have experienced.

    Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park

    Hidden gem in Florida

Great get away in west-central Florida as a day trip or long weekend stay.

We spent the day hiking the numerous off-road trails and enjoying some of the amenities the park has to offer. The park has separate primitive tent, car-camping (tent) and cabin campgrounds near the entrance of the park along with over 50 miles of biking, hiking, nature as well as equestrian trails to enjoy. Not to mention several parking areas throughout with playgrounds and an educational center make this a favorite for families to just get away.

Reservations can be made for camping up to 90 days in advance either online or at the park. We noticed several rangers and volunteers performing various tasks to improve the parks appearance. Will definitely be returning!

Palmetto Ridge Campground — Myakka River State Park

Not the Florida you imagine about when you think Florida...

Hidden cabins, hiking, off-road biking, boating, wildlife...so much beauty and activities to enjoy in this park! The cabins are off the main path, tucked away and private. They are super roomy and comfortable with their own picnic tables and grills. You can launch canoes/kayaks or book a trip on the boats in the park. If you like off-road biking there are several nice trails. Really family-friendly!

    Withlacoochee River Park

    A Hidden Gem

Wow... a few miles from home and one I will visit often! This lovely county run park you will find at the end of a 15 min drive down a back country road. There is so much to see and do here. The campsites are well shaded. (unless grounds were full when you reserved and you took option to camp in adjoining astronomy field). I would have rated a 5+ except that there is only 1 small bathhouse in campground. There are other bathrooms on property though. Staff on phone are not overly friendly - but do not let that dissuade you from booking a spot here!

There are multiple tent camping sites dispersed on property and 1 primitive site that you have to hike into. The group site is very popular with local scouts! The RV/Tent sites are roomy and not too close together - but not very private either. There is a dump station onsite

Next to campground you will find a historic church, a large and small cabin available for rent, 2 playgrounds, shelters, large pavilion with grill/fire pit, fishing dock, canoe launch, paved bike trail hiking trails and an observation tower. On new moon nights the local astronomy club uses neighboring field to gaze at the stars. This place is quiet and dark at night!

Wildlife did not seem to be a problem at camp (but we are very careful with trash). There are lots of birds, deer and fishing was good on the river.

You might have to compete with us for a reservation here - we will be back!

Little Manatee River State Park Campground

    A lovely state park

Really enjoyed our stay here, good size lot, #10, with electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. Clean dump station. Natural trees providing privacy between lots. A lot of walking trails for people and horses. A surprise was the amphitheater. Washers and dryers are located outside the bathrooms. Friendly hosts and other campers. Would came again.

    Oscar Scherer State Park Campground

    Nice woodsy Campground

We stayed in site # 98 which was very private, we had water & electric, picnic table & fire pit. Clean restrooms, a nature center, kayak launch & kayak rentals, a small lake you can swim in and some hiking trails. There are some really nice sites #19, 17 near the lake, in our loop #86 is the biggest but you have to have 2 water hoses to reach the hook up (they just updated some things in the park they may have corrected this but not sure). There is water behind the site you can fish back there. Sites #44, 45, 50, 75, and 73 are all good.

We kayaked, swam in the lake, went to Nokomas Beach & Venice beach, Venice Rookery, it's a nice area to visit.

We did have some interesting neighbors who got thrown out after 6 hours of honking their horn & yelling crazy stuff but they escorted them out & they are not allowed back in.

Restrooms near us were small but very clean. We will go back it's a great campground.

Guide to Riverview

Cabin camping options near Riverview, Florida span across rural and suburban settings within a 30-minute drive radius. Most cabin rentals in this region offer access to water activities on the Little Manatee River, Alafia River, and Hillsborough River systems. Winter temperatures typically range from 50-75°F, making December through March the peak reservation period when availability becomes limited.

What to do

Paddling adventures: Little Manatee River provides calm waters ideal for beginners and families. "We rented canoes and kayaks, and had a fun day on the river. Employees were very nice and helpful!" notes one visitor to Canoe Outpost Little Manatee River.

Bike trails: Alafia River State Park Campground features mountain biking trails suitable for various skill levels. A camper explains: "This park is close to home for me, I come here often for the Mountain Biking and the awesome humans. The facilities are clean and the MTB trails are constantly changing so we are never bored here."

Wildlife viewing: The region hosts numerous bird species and smaller wildlife. "Extremely helpful rangers who warned that some of the trails were still not cleared from Hurricane Irma. Even with the down trees, it was a wonderful hike filled with Black Swallowtail butterflies," reports a visitor at Little Manatee River State Park Campground.

What campers like

Secluded sites: Many campers appreciate the natural dividers between sites at several parks. "Natural trees providing privacy between lots. A lot of walking trails for people and horses. A surprise was the amphitheater," writes one camper about their experience at Little Manatee River State Park.

Water access: Proximity to rivers enhances the cabin camping experience. A visitor at Canoe Outpost Little Manatee River shares, "We enjoyed our 3 hour kayak trip and then they very kindly found us a spot to stay for the night. We honestly didn't want to leave."

Clean facilities: Many parks maintain quality facilities despite high usage. "Bathhouse was clean. They offer recycling, which is a great plus! It's nice and dark at night," notes a camper at Hillsborough River State Park Campground.

What you should know

Seasonal insects: Mosquitoes can be problematic during warmer months. "Bring plenty of bugspray, the mosquitoes here are big enough to carry away a small dog," warns a Hillsborough River State Park visitor.

Noise factors: Some cabin locations experience road noise. A Canoe Outpost visitor notes, "PROS: lots of trees and shade, near river. CONS: right next to a highway/large road with TONS of traffic noise."

Reservation timing: Winter is peak season requiring advance planning. "We needed a campsite near Tampa FL for a few days to meet friends visiting the area from up north. Being a Floridian, we've experienced FL's state parks and found them to offer privacy between sites," explains a camper at Hillsborough River State Park.

Varying cabin standards: Cabin amenities differ significantly between parks. "Our site was spacious. It did not flood when we had torrential downpours for a few hours one night," reports a visitor to Hardee Lakes Park.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access: Some resorts offer swimming pools for children. "Great heated pool and hot tubs. Staff is excellent. Lots of beaches and places to visit and explore nearby," shares a visitor at St. Petersburg-Madeira Beach KOA Holiday.

Recreation options: Beyond water activities, some parks provide additional entertainment. A St. Petersburg-Madeira Beach KOA camper explains, "Great inner city spot. Friendly staff and the grounds are bigger then expected. Full hook ups for RVs and separate tent area. Has a small shallow marina. Great for Kayaks, canoeing... etc. They have a heated pool, mini golf course, shuffle board, dog run."

Safety considerations: Some parks have water features requiring supervision. "Trails are amazing. Also, don't come expecting the pool to be open, just consider it a lucky bonus if it happens to be. They look for any reason possible to close it," advises a Hillsborough River State Park camper.

Tips from RVers

Site positioning: RV cabin sites vary in privacy and access. A visitor at Tampa East RV Resort notes, "Office management were very nice. We left early due to hurricane Nicole. They gave us a voucher to stay there again or at any Sun Outdoor Resort. It's a huge park with 2 pools."

Hookup access: Electrical connections vary between cabin locations. "Our electric box was a bit tricky to plug in since somehow it was almost on the ground. The roads going back to other units were tight and we could have never made it through," reports a Tampa East RV Resort guest.

Extended stay options: Several parks accommodate longer-term cabin rentals. "Excellent accommodations include a large clubhouse for socializing, playing games and 2 pool tables. Large laundry room and bathrooms/showers, all very clean and in good repair," notes a visitor describing cabin facilities at Southern Aire RV Resort.
