What to do
Kayaking on South Creek: At Oscar Scherer State Park Campground, visitors can paddle through natural Florida waterways. "This was our first visit to Oscar Scherer State Park, why I'm not sure as we only live a few miles away. I literally drive by it whenever I go to the grocery store or ride my bike on the Legacy Trail. I've boated past on the Intercoastal Waterway, paddled past on South Creek and flown over in an airplane countless times," explains one visitor who discovered the park's paddling opportunities.
Wildlife observation at Deep Hole: The wilderness preserve at Palmetto Ridge Campground — Myakka River State Park requires a special permit limited to 30 people daily. "We arrived at the gate! After hearing of the wilderness preserve we decided to go ahead and get the permit. You drive about a mile down the road from the main state park entrance to find the wilderness preserve entrance which is code protected. After driving back to the parking area, we realized we had the 600 acres to ourselves. We then hiked to the deep hole. There we saw tons of alligators birds and wildlife!"
Biking the Legacy Trail: The paved 10-mile Legacy Trail runs through Oscar Scherer State Park and connects to Venice. "Park is located about half way on 10 mile paved multi use trail-Legacy trail. This was a great trail for biking. Multiple stops along the way but mostly in full sun. You can launch kayaks from park and kayak south creek."

Absolutely beautiful and peaceful," reports one visitor. Another adds, "Great place to take horses camping," highlighting the equestrian facilities not found at many other cabin locations.
What you should know
Seasonal water conditions: Water levels affect activities in summer and fall months. "The river was low so the kayak rental & boat tours were shut down," notes a visitor to Myakka River State Park. During dry periods, boat tours and paddling rentals may be suspended.
Wildlife precautions: Alligators are common in water areas near cabins. "Went to drain the tanks yesterday morning and a large sounding gator started to growl territorially at me. So heads up with your pets please," warns a camper at Myakka River State Park.
Limited office hours: At Encore Ramblers Rest, where cabins are available alongside RV sites, visitors noted administrative challenges. "Office hours were posted but rarely found it to be open, which was a little frustrating." Cabin guests should plan ahead for check-in procedures and after-hours arrivals.
Tips for camping with families
Petting zoo access: The Bradenton / Hunsader Farms KOA offers unique family amenities. "Stayed here for a week in May - quiet, pretty campground with friendly staff, a petting zoo and vegetable farm on property. We enjoyed the produce market, but you could also go in the fields and pick your own."
Evening wildlife watching: Children can observe nocturnal animals from cabin porches. "There were armadillos foraging behind the site at night, and a very brave raccoon that didn't seem to care I was shining my flashlight at him or telling him to get leave. We also loved that fellow campers pointed out a pair of screech owls just above our site."
Ranger programs: State park cabins often include educational opportunities. "Ranger led programs take place nightly. We actually got to see a Florida panther on one of the trails as well as a friendly family of scrub Jay's! Our 6 yo son loved that we felt safe enough that he could ride his bike around the camp ground to play with the other campers."
Tips from RVers
Water hookup locations: At Oscar Scherer State Park, cabin and RV sites have unusual water access points. "The electric hookup is in its normal spot, but be aware that the water is in the woods on the opposite side (one pedestal feeding two sites). Make sure to bring a longer hose, or park closer to the water than electric."
Gate codes: Evening arrivals require advance planning. "Note, gate closed at dusk, call ahead to get the gate code or there is a mile plus hike to find some one with the code. Don't ask me why I know that," advises an Oscar Scherer camper who learned this lesson firsthand.
Site selection strategy: Specific cabin sites offer better experiences. "Our site was 10 and we loved the privacy of the nature between every campsite along those areas for bigger rigs. The River is really nice for canoeing as well as for fishing and nature views." Sites numbered 17-20 at Oscar Scherer are down a side path, with site 20 having water views but challenging access.
