What to do
Explore Loop Road: Located near Midway Campground, this 26-mile scenic drive provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. "The 26 mile loop road is very close and a great way to experience Florida & Big Cypress backcountry and wildlife from your car or bike. Plenty of hiking trails in the area as well," notes one camper.
Kayak the mangroves: Chokoloskee Bay offers protected paddling routes suitable for beginners to experienced kayakers. "You can rent boat slips or launch a kayak; rent one if you don't have your own. Pick up your fishing supplies at the office," explains a visitor to Chokoloskee RV Park.
Night sky viewing: The distance from major cities creates exceptional stargazing conditions. "The stars were absolutely incredible being so far from major cities," reports one camper about Midway Campground. Another visitor at Monument Lake noted, "Quiet campground with cell tower nearby... Camp host Chris is very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the area."
What campers like
Fishing access: The waterways throughout the area offer both freshwater and saltwater fishing opportunities. At Monument Lake Campground, "Fishing allowed in lake. Campsites are quite level," mentions one visitor. Another camper observed, "Great fishing in the area. Fresh and salt."
Wildlife sightings: The preserve's ecosystem supports diverse wildlife including alligators, birds, and occasionally Florida panthers. "Campgrounds are based all around the lake... Great to see tons of alligators," notes a Monument Lake visitor. Another camper reported, "Lake had Alligators in it."
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept facilities despite their remote locations. At Crystal Lake RV Resort, visitors appreciate the "Incredibly clean amenities and friendly resort if you are lucky enough to get in. Mostly a snow bird community but overall very nice a community."
What you should know
Seasonal operation: Several campgrounds close during summer months. "Monument lake is only open during the Florida winter. For alternative options, Midway Campground was the closest option open in Miami direction, and Trail Lakes Campground was the closest option open in Naples Direction," explains one visitor.
Insect preparation: Depending on season and recent rainfall, insects can be significant. "Bring bug spray if you intend to sit outside at night," advises a Midway Campground visitor. At Monument Lake, another camper noted, "Every night at 7pm the tent sites were swarmed with a fly hatch (may flies, I'm guessing). We couldn't breathe without inhaling them."
Limited services: Many campgrounds have minimal amenities and are distant from supply points. At Endless Summer RV Park, one visitor noted it's a "Small no frills campground... Beautiful area all around but nothing fancy. Its a short drive to downtown Naples and Naples Pier/Beach which I highly recommend."
