Big Cypress National Preserve encompasses Mitchell Landing Campground, a National Park Service facility that provides primitive camping along Loop Road. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with sites ranging from $24 per night to half-price for holders of Senior or Access passes.
Sites include both open areas and spots tucked behind brush and trees, giving campers options for privacy levels. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, lantern pole, and bear box for food storage. The campground features vault toilets that reviewers consistently describe as clean, though no drinking water is available on-site. The nearest water source is at Midway Campground — Big Cypress National Preserve, located 30 minutes away.
An airboat launch at the back of the campground provides access to backcountry trails in the Stairsteps section of the preserve. paul W. notes seeing "a bobcat and a billion alligators" during his stay, highlighting the wildlife viewing opportunities. The area offers excellent freshwater fishing for peacock bass, largemouth bass, and other species.
Campers can stay up to 10 nights during peak season from January through April, extending to 14 consecutive nights the rest of the year. Those exploring the broader region can find additional campgrounds around Big Cypress National Preserve for extended trips.
