    Blakeley State Park Campground

Very large park, hiking, camping, battlegrounds

Blakely State Park is a very large State Park, with different choices for camping. There are larger primitive tent sites, smaller tent sites with power/water hookups, RV sites, two primitive cabins and 2 newer cabins which are very nice. There's TONS of hiking, a battleground for history buffs, a playground, a boatdock, lots of hiking, horseback riding etc.

I stayed in one of the two Squirrels Nest, which are primitive cabins. Basically open air cabins. 2 walls, a roof and 2 walls of screens. There are two wooden platforms for beds. A twin and a queen, and barstools to sit inside and look out into the woods, over the hill in which they are nestled. There's a sink (but no water) and a cabinet, and outside a large deck with bench seating. Below is a fire pit and picnic table. There is a shared porta potty outside of the two cabins. These cabins are a bit of a drive out in the woods, so make sure your vehicle is up to it. It's very peaceful out there. My cabin was inhabited by mice at night, so I kept my food in airtight plastic paint bucket containers & my belongings covered by garbage bags on one of the platforms and had my air mattress inside a pop-up mosquito tent, so the mice did not bother me. I was after all in their house. I sprinkled peppermint oil around my gear & my bed platform to keep the mice away. Next time I will have my food in a large cooler so that the wildlife is not attracted.

There are hiking trails by these sites, as well as, steps down the hill, leading off into another trail.

i would stay there again. Great place to get away.

    Navarre Beach Camping Resort

    Southern Hospitality at its Best!

Staff: once again the entire staff is a living definition of southern hospitality. The moment you step on the property you are greeted with staff that actually want to be there, everyone from office, store, clubhouse and maintenance. They do an amazing job at setting a welcoming and accommodating atmosphere for all patrons. 5 STARS! Accommodations: Grounds: well maintained and clean; Pool Area: Clean and pool is HEATED. Cabins: clean and have a pinterest beach vibe! Pet Area: clean, double gated, lighted with bench poo bags supplied! Pet friendly. Pier and beach area very clean with swings and super comfortable lounge chairs to soak up all the sun and breeze. Pier is great for fishing and benches along the pier provide a great way to view sunrise and sunset. Club house: during our stay they hosted an amazing THANKSGIVING dinner and a paint night; also features a large screen tv and seating areas for those occasional rainy days. On the weekends they have breakfast on the grill, best breakfast I've had in a long time(shout out to the cook and staff:) Playground area is lighted with a box of sand toys and various other toys to keep the kidos busy. Atmosphere: There is NO OTHER campground in the area that beats the atmosphere at this campground. The staff and the care they take to make sure everyone's experience is the best is hands down the best in this area. I honestly can't think of one thing that would have made our stay more enjoyable. This is the second time I've stayed here.

    Beach front

This beach front campground is beautiful, quiet, and relaxing. Under new ownership they seem friendly and helpful. Dog friendly park that is away from the major city hubs, nothing but the beach is walkable. Our site was level with a grill, fire pit, picnic table and a wooden deck.

    Nice KOA Near Beaches

Nice campground, gravel site with small pad with picnic table and fire ring. FHU, and plenty of activities and amenities for our granddaughter. Playground, mini golf, large outdoor Connect Four game. Nice dog park, camp store and pool, but too cold to swim. Didn’t use facilities, but looked clean. Tents and cabins in backside of the park. I would reserve there if possible some interstate noise upfront. Staff friendly and took us to our site. Love the bike trails nearby.

    Mystic Springs Recreation Area

    Remote Primitive and Wild

Pros: Covered tent sites (we tent camped) portapottys, free for up to a week, boat launch, spaced out sites (pretty private). Has picnic tables, fire pits, and grills. Cons: Sites flood, lots of gaters (if you have small pets this is sketchy), gets a little busy on the weekends with the boaters, it's reaallllly far from the next town but there's a gas station 15mins away. Get gas before you go back to camp. It's beautiful and clean. About 45mins to pcola

    Meaher State Park Campground

Very close sites, on/near the Bay.

I have done tent camping at this park a couple times. All of the sites are close together and the ants are ridiculous. I had read reviews about the ants prior so I came prepared. Each site has a picnic table & fire ring. There is a boat launch, which is popular, a pier and also 2 cabins that you can rent. This is a popular park for RV's. And of course there is a shower house & covered picnic tables.

I chose a specific site with water view which was enjoyable. The street lights throughout the park are very bright, so if you're light sensitive when you sleep, use a darker tent. All the sites have power & water hookups.

    Mystic Springs Recreation Area

Primitive site with fire ring, grill, trash can, , large portapotty and nice water view.

I’ve camped at Mystic Springs numerous times. I book the group site. Very large & spacious. Perfect for a large group or multiple people. Plenty of room for several tents. It has a fire ring, grill, covered structure with 2 picnic tables, a garbage can and a large portapotty. It’s generally very quiet. It’s a gated site so to me it feels more secure. People do walk through the site occasionally but not too often. It’s primitive camping so no power & no potable water. Most sites have water view.

    Harper - Blakeley State Park

    Beautiful Well Maintained Huge Park

April 4, 2021 Camper Van Site: Harper #7 Primitive $20 Over 2,000 acres crisscrossed with trails. Interesting replication of the ghost town of Blakeley which disappeared around 1830, but before then it rivaled Mobile in population and economy. Harper loop, where I camped, is at least a mile into the woods and has no hook ups. The sites have picnic tables and fire rings and offer decent privacy. Bath house is 7 minute walk. My shower was cold. Dumpsters near bath house. Staff house nearby. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Wish I could stay more than two nights.

    RV park closer to entrance.

What campers like

Private accommodations: While camping cabins near Cantonment offer privacy, many visitors appreciate their seclusion. A reviewer at Mystic Springs Recreation Area mentioned, "Loved this place. It doesn't look like it on the campground map, but most sites are secluded and come with their own picnic table, fire ring, and cover! The cover is amazing - you can put your tent, car or camper under it to stay dry."

Beach proximity: Cabins providing beach access are highly rated. A Fort Pickens visitor stated, "The beach and water were just beautiful," while another noted they were "less than a 10 minute walk from the beach." At Gulf State Park Campground, a camper appreciated the "access to the beach and between gulf shores and orange beach. Conveniently located to everything."

On-site amenities: Many cabin facilities offer comprehensive amenities. One family staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park shared, "We stayed at Jellystone this past weekend and ended up staying a third night (unplanned). We had a lot of fun. The kids loved all of the Saturday activities. Campsites have a fire pit, so we made s'mores. They have a store with everything we needed."

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin camping locations near Cantonment require advance planning. At Fort Pickens, "Reservations can be made online (and should be made early if you plan on coming during the busy spring and summer seasons). It is best to check the park's website before your visit because sometimes they have to close the road to the campground due to sand and water on the roads."

Varied cabin facilities: Cabin options range from rustic to fully equipped. At Blue Angel Park, a visitor noted, "Mid week get away. Stayed at Anchor Cove (rustic). Electric, water with Dump Station." At Mystic Springs, each site has "a porta potty, garbage can & covered pavilion with picnic table, fire ring & grill."

Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts the cabin camping experience throughout the year. Very few trees! Bring your own shade."

Tips for camping with families

(Crafts, hay rides, s'mores and more)." Another family reported, "This was our first campground experience and we thoroughly enjoyed it! The lake is full of bream and each of my kids caught their first fish, definitely a memorable trip."

Swimming options: Multiple cabin locations feature swimming facilities. At Gulf State Park, "Kids love the splash pad. Bigs sites, food trucks, site store, boat ramps, nice pool, access to the beach." At Gulf Shores-Pensacola West KOA, a family mentioned, "We had a lot of fun playing putt putt and swimming in the pool."

Educational opportunities: Cabin camping provides learning experiences for children. At Fort Pickens, "We went on a full moon night hike where the ranger talk focused on astrology and how moon phases impact some animals." Blue Angel Park offers wildlife viewing where children might see "deer and coyotes."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: RVers staying in cabin accommodations should consider specific site features. At Fort Pickens Campground, "We prefer to stay in Loop A because there are way fewer sites in that section and you don't get the feeling of being crowded like in Loops B – E. There is also more shade in Loop A which is very welcomed in the summer."

Supply considerations: RVers note the importance of bringing adequate supplies. A camper at Leisure Lakes RV Park mentioned, "Publix within walking distance," while those at Fort Pickens advised, "The campground is about 10 miles from the nearest convenient store or restaurant so it is best to stock up on groceries before you come."

Pest management: Several RVers mention insect concerns at cabin sites. At Mystic Springs, "In the warmer months, I've noticed ants being a bit of a problem in some areas." Another visitor warned about Gulf State Park: "Beware of the ants!!!!!! The whole campground is infested with stinging ants. There are ant piles all over the campsites."
