Sun Outdoors Mystic in Old Mystic features 50-amp electric service and water hookups on gravel sites, operating from April through mid-October. Newport RV Park

    Great location to Newport

We chose this park due to its location close to downtown Newport (a mere five miles). There is a lot to do in this area and we wanted to spend time sightseeing. The other camping option, which did appeal to us, was Fishermen’s Memorial State Park but it was a good 30-40 minutes away from downtown Newport and required paying bridge tolls so we decided to give Melville Ponds a go. There is another RV park closer to downtown but it seemed more like a parking lot not very appealing. Melville Ponds worked out the best for us because it was adjacent to a county park with wooded hiking trails, a large pond and an off-leash dog park which were very appealing because of our dog.

The park has over 100 sites and spread out over many acres. Roads are gravel and easy enough any size RV to navigate. Some sites are set beneath large trees in an attractive wooded setting while others are in an open grassy area with pads being both gravel and grass. The park is a mix of seasonal and transient campers. Site types include full hook-up (max 30 amp), water/electric only, dry camping, and a large tent section. There is a dump station located at the entrance to the park and gray water dump stations are spread among sites without sewer. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. The bathrooms and shower house are located in the middle of the park and were very clean. There is a small camp store, large playground, basketball court, and open air covered pavilion with picnic tables.

We chose a site in the open because the winds were projected to be 40-50 mph while we were there and we did not want falling branches on the coach. Our site (F4) had 30 amp and water. Satellite reception (Dish TV) was good and we were able to get a number of air antenna channels. The section that we were in was very big rig-friendly and one site that can be used as a pull-thru.

The park is open from April 15th to November 15th. Prices vary depending on the season, if you have a weekly/monthly rate, and the type of hook-ups you want. We paid $38/night for water and 30 amp service.

The park is located within 1/2 mile of restaurants, gas stations, grocery, shopping, and more. Downtown historic Newport is a 10-minute drive away and you are only 35 minutes from Providence.  There is definitely lots to do in Newport and Providence. You can tour 70-room mansions, visit the beach, brush up on tennis history at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum, watch boats cruise in and out of a beautiful harbor, shop, eat at fabulous restaurants, and gawk at the charming historic homes.

The location of this park was great for what we were doing – not too far from Newport but in a nice quiet section of town. The distance between sites was far enough that you did not feel cramped or on top of your neighbor. The nearby hiking trail was perfect for our dog and while it was just a few miles long, it was great because it was within walking distance and she could swim in the pond. The close proximity of restaurants was an added bonus.

    Douglas Forest RV Resort

    Awesome Campground In The Forest

We had an incredible stay at Douglas Forest RV Resort! From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by how peaceful and well-maintained everything was. The RV sites are spacious and easy to navigate, with full hookups and strong Wi-Fi— a big plus for us since we work remotely on the road. What really sets this place apart is the location. You’re literally steps away from Douglas State Forest, which made morning hikes and evening strolls absolutely magical. It’s pet-friendly too, and our dog loved the wooded trails and open areas. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the camp store had everything we needed. Even though the recreation area is still being built, the amenities already in place more than made up for it. We’re already planning our next trip for summer when the pool opens! If you’re looking for a relaxing spot that blends nature with convenience, look no further. Douglas Forest RV Resort is a true hidden gem!

    Newport RV Park

Clean and quiet camping close to downtown

We stayed in the premium pull through sites here. The whole campground is gorgeous. You’ll notice how clean and quiet it is right when you first arrive. Check in was under a minute; the staff already had everything prepared which made it super simple. The premium sites have no shade and are a little close to the neighbors. However, they have great paver stone patios and fire pits. They also had a slight downhill slope so it required some extra blocks to level out. Overall, the whole place is a great campground. Plenty of hiking within walking distance and a short drive to all local attractions. Plenty of amenities and a modest camp store as well. I’ll be back for sure.

    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

What to do

Kayaking on nearby waters: At Aces High RV Park in East Lyme, campers can enjoy water activities just steps from their site. "There is a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun," writes April L.

Mini golf and recreation: Family-friendly activities abound near Sun Outdoors Mystic in Old Mystic. "The mini golf course was actually really nice and not the run-down homemade ones that you usually see at campgrounds. They had an arcade, theater area," notes Nancy W. who appreciated the well-maintained recreational facilities.

History exploration: Old Sturbridge Village is easily accessible from many eastern Connecticut campgrounds. "Close to I-95 and 15 minutes from the beach. Fishing areas for the kids," mentions Tom S., highlighting how Aces High serves as a convenient base for regional attractions.

What campers like

Spacious concrete pads: Premium waterfront sites at Aces High RV Park offer exceptional setup areas. "Beautiful site including level concrete pad and patio, clean and well-maintained utilities, and beautiful view," writes Matt S. who appreciated the concrete pads and well-designed utility hookups.

Walking trails for pets: Many campgrounds accommodate pets with designated walking areas. "Clean, family friendly campground with plenty of area to walk pets. Spots are well organized and no issues with hookups," notes Tom S. about his stay at Aces High RV Park.

Proximity to tourist destinations: The location of Countryside RV Park makes it ideal for regional exploration. "Nice quite Campgrowd, limited child activity's easy drive to lake/fishing. Close to museums, shopping," explains Mark T., highlighting the convenient access to area attractions.

What you should know

Power fluctuations: Electrical capacity varies significantly between campgrounds. At Thousand Trails Sturbridge, "cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls," reports Mara S., noting connectivity challenges common to wooded campgrounds in the region.

Site configuration variations: Campground layouts differ significantly across eastern Connecticut. "We camped here with friends and got one of the 'buddy sites' so our patios faced each other. I like this configuration when camping with friends but would not like this site if we did not know our neighbors," explains Nancy W. about Sun Outdoors Mystic.

Variable road conditions: Access roads at some campgrounds present challenges. "Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," notes April L. about Ross Hill RV Park, describing the terrain that may affect arrival and setup.

Tips for camping with families

Pool amenities: Douglas Forest RV Resort offers water recreation for families. "The pool is well-maintained and enjoyable. However, other amenities need attention - the playground equipment shows its age," reports Glenn M., providing insight on recreational options.

Playground access: When camping with children, check facility maintenance. "We had a great time relaxing around the campfire with another family. The playground was a hit for our kids!" shares Alissa T. about her experience at Thousand Trails Sturbridge.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many campgrounds feature natural settings with wildlife observation possibilities. "Beautiful pond and natural setting with lots of ducks, geese, chickens, and wild birds," describes Matt S., highlighting the nature experience at Aces High that engages children.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Choose sites carefully based on your rig size. "The sites are large and it's very clean and a beautiful park. The staff are always so helpful," reports Tasha O. about her experience at Aces High RV Park, noting the spacious accommodations that work well for larger rigs.

Off-season considerations: RV camping near Willimantic changes significantly in shoulder seasons. "It wasn't too loud here in October. Had site B1, which was water and electric. Close to the pond," notes Mara S. about Thousand Trails Sturbridge, highlighting the quieter atmosphere during fall camping.

Utility placement awareness: Pay attention to hookup locations when selecting sites. "Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should (other parks should come and take a look at how to do this right)," shares Matt S. about the well-designed infrastructure at Ashaway RV Resort that makes setup easier for RVers.
