Best RV Parks & Resorts near Trumbull, CT

Several RV parks operate within 30 miles of Trumbull, Connecticut, providing varied options for motorhome travelers. Lake Compounce Campground in Bristol offers big-rig friendly sites with electric hookups and 50-amp service from May through October, though it lacks sewer connections at individual sites. Branch Brook Campground features full hookup RV sites with water, electric, and sewer connections, accommodating larger rigs on level sites. Salem Farms Campground maintains 189 RV-specific sites with 30/50-amp electric and water hookups, operating seasonally from May until Columbus Day. "Sites had zero privacy and were all pull through. There was water, electric and sewer hookups at each site," noted one RV camper describing the layout at a nearby park.

Seasonal availability varies significantly across RV parks in the region. Most campgrounds operate from spring through fall, with limited year-round options. Multiple dump stations are available throughout the area, with Lake Compounce and Branch Brook both providing sanitary dump facilities for guests. Cell service is generally strong across the region, with one reviewer reporting "3 to 4 bars" at a nearby state park. Pet-friendly policies are common at most RV campgrounds, though specific restrictions may apply. Navigation to some parks requires careful planning, as one RV owner cautioned: "2 miles of the Road have many areas of missing blacktop making a very rough ride with low branches. The dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig." Advance reservations are recommended, particularly during summer weekends and fall foliage season.

    Blydenburgh County Park

    Big Rig Camping in Blydenburgh

We have a 42 ft 5th wheel toy hauler. A few Big Rig spots are available, but this is a Suffock Co Campground that is not well maintained. 2 miles of the Road have many areas of missing blacktop making a very rough ride with low branches. The dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig. Most of the longer sites were very difficult to level.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

large family friendly campground with beach access

Hammonasset Beach State Park Campground is huge, family-friendly, and has direct beach access from the campground. There is no lifeguard on duty at the campground beach but lifeguards patrol the beach a mile or so north within the park. Smaller (car-top) boats can be launched from this area as well.

The campsites do NOT include a fire pit (or grill). You must bring your own or there are fire tub rentals available at the campground store.

The park includes a Nature Center complete with exhibits and activities, and hiking trails. Bald eagles can be seen on the nature reserve.

Expect long lines at the state park entrance fee station on the weekend if the weather is nice.

    Riverdale Farm Campsites

Great camping near Mystic off I-95

This is a really nice family campground just a mile or so off I-95 in Clinton, CT. It is about 20 miles from Mystic and the historic seaport center. Most of the roads are paved, the sites are large and level, there are full hookups, and a dump station. There are a lot of seasonal residents, but still plenty of open sites for travelers. There is a playground, game room, “adult ” lounge, a laundry, a swimming pond, and river access for fishing and swimming. Internet is an extra fee! ($6/day) The road into the campground is narrow and winding, so larger RV mss as y have trouble, but there were several of them there when we were there. There is a security gate at the entrance.

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

    Peaceful 4th of July 2020

This campsite is near the shore in my home state of CT. It took a little over an hour to get here. Our spot was near a large salt marsh.

The park and beach were full occupancy for campers without reservations. I saw no tents - maybe due to COVID. There are ample bathhouses but the one near me is locked up. I suspect the others may also be closed.

A pair of geese and their goslings came to visit. See video and pictures.

No campfires allowed without a fire pit. You can rent one at the small camp store for a $20 deposit plus $12 first night the $2 each night - pay in advance.

Sites are large and clean. My site has trees for shade and a place to hang my hammock. But the park officials made me take it down :(.

Water hookup but no electricity on our sites. Water for drinking only was on my site but you can’t connect with a hose to your camper in most of the less expensive sites. There are more expensive sites with full hookups but no Wi-Fi.

Price of my site is very affordable around $20 a night.

I saw 2 dump stations near exit. Supermarkets a few miles down the road.

Easy to walk to the beach. Plan to kayak. There is a boat launch at Meig’s Point where you can drive 100 feet from the water to unload from your car. Lovely small beaches, walkways and jetties for fishing or photos of nature.

Guide to Trumbull

Trumbull, Connecticut sits at approximately 330 feet above sea level with rolling hills and deciduous forest landscapes throughout the surrounding region. Most campgrounds near Trumbull operate seasonally from May through mid-October, with limited winter camping options. Temperatures during prime camping season typically range from 50°F at night to 85°F during summer days.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Cozy Hills Campground, campers can fish right on the property. "Kids caught about 20 fish" during a two-night midweek stay according to one visitor. The small pond provides a convenient spot for quick fishing sessions without leaving the campground.

Hiking trails: Nearby Clarence Fahnestock State Park Campground offers extensive trail systems. "There was a pretty consistent breeze (few bugs!) and the soft sounds of bullfrogs at night. A tree with a couple medium-size dead limbs was above the ideal place to pitch the tent," noted one camper about their site near Pelton Pond. The 1.5-mile Pelton Pond loop trail connects directly to multiple campsites.

Swimming access: Many campgrounds in the region feature swimming facilities with varying rules. "The beach is closed after Labor Day to the public, but open to people staying at the campsite. Clean and beautiful," explained a visitor about fall swimming options at Fahnestock. For safety, most campground beaches close by sunset and swimming outside designated areas is typically prohibited.

What campers like

Private bathrooms: Clean facilities rank high on camper priorities. "Clean private bathrooms were a plus," noted one guest at Cozy Hills Campground. These individual bathroom units offer more privacy than traditional communal facilities.

Spacious sites: At Totoket Valley RV Park, campers appreciate the site layouts. "Each site has grass and a picnic table. There is a wonderful little frozen custard shop down the road called roses farm stand," mentioned one reviewer. The grassy areas provide comfortable spaces for outdoor activities.

Proximity to attractions: Beaver Pond Campground offers convenience to multiple destinations. "About 30 minutes from sleepy hollow and tarrytown NY and only an hour to central park!! Deer running everywhere and surprisingly beautiful and quaint," wrote one camper. This location serves as an affordable base camp for exploring both natural areas and urban attractions.

What you should know

Campground terrain: Many campgrounds in the region feature hilly layouts. At Cozy Hills, "It's very hilly. A golf cart is recommended if your site is far from the pool." This topography affects site selection and navigation around the grounds.

Site privacy varies: Site placement and vegetation significantly impact privacy levels. "Most sites were secluded if you wanted more private camping (also super unique layouts) but there were plenty if you needed a quick stop over," noted a visitor at Kettletown State Park Campground.

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds close during winter months. "Stayed in September 2021. CG is pretty empty during the week and gets busy during the weekend," observed a camper at Lake Compounce Campground about shoulder season patterns. Weekdays typically offer more solitude and better site selection even during peak season.

Wildlife encounters: Multiple campgrounds report regular wildlife sightings. "Deer running everywhere" at Beaver Pond, while others mention raccoons, skunks, and occasional larger mammals. Proper food storage is essential at all campsites in the region.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Campgrounds often schedule organized events. "Lots and lots of activities for kids! Arts & Crafts, Arcade, Bingo, Casino Night etc." reported a visitor at Cozy Hills. These structured activities provide entertainment options beyond traditional outdoor recreation.

Pool safety: Several campgrounds feature family-friendly pool designs. "Pool is very nice for families - with no deep end, really safe for younger kids," noted a Cozy Hills camper. Most campground pools maintain seasonal hours from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Playground access: Lake Compounce Campground features both campground and amusement park facilities. "They have a small playground, activities, tennis court, basketball. Not to mention its next to the amusement park," explained a reviewer. This combination provides varied recreation options within walking distance.

RV tips

Pull-through configuration: At Lake Compounce Campground, "Sites were long so even though you face your neighbor, the sites were long enough that our door wasn't directly across from our neighbor." This layout affects privacy considerations when selecting sites.

Dump station access: While many RV parks near Trumbull provide sewer hookups, some have limitations. "It is adjacent to an amusement park so there were lots of families here. None of the sites have sewer, but there is a dump station on the way out," reported a Lake Compounce visitor. Always check sewer connection availability when booking.

RV site leveling: At Branch Brook Campground, visitors noted mixed site conditions. "Spaces were decent sized. We were in site 16 and it was on the creek which was a decent view and gave us plenty of space to sit outside." Site reviews from specific campers can help identify the most level options for larger rigs.
