    Mystic KOA

Awesome Sunsets at the Mystic KOA

Didn’t quite feel like camping, but it was still a lovely weekend away at the Mystic KOA. We decided to head down to check out the aquarium and stayed at a deluxe cabin. It was cute and clean and furnished with linens, cookware, utensils, kitchen essentials, keurig coffee maker/pods, and full-sized fridge. Only complaint was an odd, musty smell we couldn’t quite figure out.

The grounds are large with vast amounts of space. Be forewarned that it’s right off of 95, and the sound definitely carries. Trees are sparse in areas, but the sunsets were a nice trade off. Amenities seemed nice from what we could tell - cool outdoor movie screen, pools and playground, though we certainly didn’t get to enjoy these things in February.

    Charlie Brown Campground

    Well run Campground

WE come here every year with our group, RVing Women Northeast Network for our first rally of the season each year for a number of years,  The reason we come back is the way we are treated, because they have pavilions that have a campfires pit and the roof is made so it takes the smoke straight up out of the pavilion yet is protective of those under the roof from rain etc.  VERY enjoyable.  We all park around this Pavillon.  IT is well kept, kids are entertained by parents and fishing etc.  Parties are present but they have quiet hour and it seems to be obeyed.

    Sutton Falls Camping Area

Georgous, private camping along pristine Aldrich Mill Pond

We were delighted when we learned we had the little peninsula of site P1 all to ourselves. Stunning views across the large pond, and serving as a wonderful halfway rest/respite on the journey from NYC to Belfast, ME. We felt like we were on top of the world, discovering this perfect quiet nook and basking in nature’s splendor.

I can only speak for the camping on this peninsula/land, but the rest of the sites looked cozy, family-friendly, and fun. Cabins and RV sites across the lake, along with beaches for swimming. Bathrooms located on P1 peninsula. Canoe rentals on-site. Lovely picnic dining area alongside covered bridge and waterfall. Completely picturesque and, mostly, totally peaceful!

    Mystic KOA

    Wasp Breeding Ground!

Pros: Helpful staff, morning garbage pickup, excellent laundry facility, plenty of activities and amenities for children. Cons: Wasps!! Wasps everywhere!! We did our best to keep them at bay by lighting some sage but they were persistent. Not much privacy back in the tent/cabin areas, camp sites very close together and people have the ability to stare right into your site.

    Wilderness Lake Park

    Cute place

My family and I stayed here a few years ago in the tent area. Not all sites are secluded, but we were the only ones so it was nice and private. At the time there was only one port-a-potty for the tent area we were in and no water source. It’s a dog friendly park which was good for us, our dog could swim in the lake with us. Cute patio overlooking the lake as well with seating. Wood delivery is awesome especially since tent area is a slight distance from office, but that is also a bonus so you’re away from the RV sites. Also price is reasonable for a private campground considering the rates a lot of other places charge.

    Rocky Neck State Park Campground

    great experience

every campsite has its own fire pit with a grill attachment and a picnic table. my site was tent only and you couldn’t pull your car up to the site so unloading and loading was a hassle. beach is a short drive on site and the showers were one site over. I had a great time

    Highland Campground

    Older but lots to do

The campground is older, and the roads/driveways need work. For those looking for newer facilities, this isn't the place. There are no 50 amp sites. The rec hall and the bath houses are old, but we don't mind the old fashioned spots at times. Reminds me of camping as a kid. There are a lot of activities for the kids and adults. Shuffleboard, bocci ball, fishing, bingo, playground, pit luck dinners, etc. There is wifi available.

There are a lot of seasonal campers which can sometimes feel like you're intruding on their space. There is a page of rules to follow, the seasonals ignore them.

There is no black water hookup, only gray water. You have to have them clean out the black or dump on the way out.

    Odetah Camping Resort

Had no idea it was there!

Stayed in October 2018. Tucked away in the woods I never knew this was there! Beautiful pond and a good mix of seasonal and overnight sites as well as cabins. Plenty of areas to walk our dogs and have them swim. Playgrounds, bath houses throughout and fully stocked camp store with anything you could ever need. Organized events, cafe on site and quick drive (or Uber ride) to Mohegan Sun.

Guide to Storrs

Connecticut camping near Storrs offers diverse woodland experiences across the state's rolling hills. The area sits at approximately 640 feet above sea level with moderate summer temperatures typically ranging from 60-85°F. Most campgrounds in the region remain open from April through October, with some extending their season into November depending on weather conditions.

What to do

Kayaking and canoeing: At Wilderness Lake Park, complimentary watercraft are available for guests to explore the lake. "They even had free kayaks/canoes for the lake," notes one camper who appreciated the amenity. The lake provides a serene paddling experience with minimal motorized traffic.

Disc golf: West Thompson Lake Campground features an on-site disc golf course for campers seeking recreational activities. A visitor mentioned, "We were able to see some boat races and played a round of disc golf on property." The course winds through wooded areas and offers varying difficulty levels.

Hiking trails: Charlie Brown Campground sits adjacent to the Natchaug Forest with accessible trails. "Surrounded by the Natchaug forest, and adjacent to the Natchaug River. Great activities for everyone," writes one reviewer. Most trails are moderately difficult and suitable for families with older children.

River tubing: Peppertree Camping offers direct river access for tubing adventures. A camper shared, "My children spent hours in it playing and fishing." The Natchaug River features gentle currents ideal for summer floating trips, with multiple entry and exit points accessible from the campground.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Many reviewers appreciate the generous site dimensions at West Thompson Lake Campground. One camper noted, "Large campsites, Nice basketball court, Decent bathrooms for a state campground." Sites accommodate standard equipment with room for additional recreational space.

Family activities: Brialee Family Campground consistently receives praise for its organized events. "There were all kinds of activities (kick-ball, etc.) that everyone could participate in, a great playground, and easy to navigate," reports a repeat visitor. Weekend activities often include themed events and contests.

Privacy options: Wilderness Lake Park offers secluded tent sites for those seeking a more traditional camping experience. "The host gave us a secluded spot in the back to the point I didn't feel like I was at a campground other than the fire ring," explains one camper. These sites provide natural separation through vegetation and terrain.

Fishing opportunities: The region's waterways support diverse fishing experiences. At Charlie Brown Campground, the riverside location creates prime fishing spots. The nearby state forests also contain additional fishing areas within short driving distance.

What you should know

Seasonal restrictions: Most campgrounds in the area operate from April through October. "Went in cooler September during Covid, so we couldn't take advantage of all the amenities, but we've already decided we need to book a trip for peak season next summer," reports a visitor to Odetah Camping Resort.

Payment policies: Some smaller campgrounds have specific payment requirements. A Wilderness Lake Park visitor advises, "Heads up, they are cash or Venmo only so be prepared." Call ahead to confirm accepted payment methods.

Bathroom facilities: Facility quality varies significantly between campgrounds. West Thompson Lake features "Decent bathrooms for a state campground," while others might have more limited amenities. Some tent-only areas rely on portable toilets rather than permanent structures.

Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds. Wilderness Lake Park sits "conveniently located just off I-84(exit 70)," which provides easy access but may introduce road noise to certain campsites.

Tips for camping with families

Activity scheduling: Wilderness Lake Park offers family-friendly water recreation. "Quaint little campground. Not many tenting sites but along a beautiful lake. Pets allowed... Bring your own kayaks or use the campgrounds free of charge," recommends a visitor. Morning activities tend to be less crowded.

Site selection: When booking with children, consider proximity to amenities. At Brialee Family Campground, a visitor noted, "Plenty of activities and things for kids to do; Rec hall, mini golf, shuffleboard, beach, pool, playground. Park is kept clean and tidy." Sites near playgrounds are convenient but may experience more foot traffic.

Weather preparedness: Connecticut's summer afternoons can bring sudden thunderstorms. Pack additional clothing layers and rain gear, particularly for yurt camping near Storrs, Connecticut, where accommodations provide shelter but outdoor activities remain weather-dependent.

Meal planning: Most campgrounds offer fire rings and picnic tables, but cooking amenities vary. Wilderness Lake Park has limited on-site food options, so bringing pre-prepared meals helps simplify the camping experience with children.

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Be aware of water and electrical limitations. A Charlie Brown Campground visitor explained, "Grey dump only due to river so no biggie. Staff was friendly and there was some stuff to do." Many campgrounds offer partial hookups with dump stations rather than full sewer connections.

Site dimensions: Measure your rig before booking at smaller campgrounds. Wilderness Lake Park accommodates larger vehicles but has limited spaces. "Beautiful views, spacious site and lots to do," reported an RV camper, but noted site availability can be limited for larger units.

Access considerations: Campground roads may present challenges for larger vehicles. Older facilities like Highland Campground have infrastructure limitations. "The campground is older, and the roads/driveways need work," cautioned one RVer, suggesting careful navigation when arriving with larger rigs.

Yurt alternatives: For RVers seeking unique accommodations, several campgrounds near Storrs offer yurt camping options as an alternative to traditional setups. These structures provide a middle ground between tent camping and RV convenience.
