    Moon Valley Campground

    Very unique smaller private campground

This was a great campsite nestled in the foothills of Northern NJ on the NY border. Small, clean with great views and great location for hiking , cruising etc. Bring your tent or use the existing glamping tents. Headed back for a fall weekend in the "dome" which has incredible views. Try it you won't be sorry.

    The Best of both worlds

Jake from the Dyrt here!  The Moon Valley Campground is an awesome spot for those who want to camp in luxury, with their awesome dome structures.  The campground is also near the Appalachian trail while still only about an hour from Manhattan!  Check them out and leave a review with your adventures during your stay!

    Lake Waramaug State Park Campground

A very tired campground. Full of problems and inconsistencies.

This campground changed in the last few years, but not for the better. It is apparent that the manager does not like campers. If you have a tent, you are treated ok, until you violate one of their endless rules. Then they have the police escort you out.. If you have a pop-up or anything above the ground on wheels they make your life miserable and prevent you from camping in the front row where the sites are larger, level, and have a lake view. Bathrooms are dirty and uncared for, toilet paper is non-existent in the afternoon. Alcohol is not allowed but is poorly enforced. Quiet hours are not enforced. Two cars per site is not enforced. Loud Boomboxes are the norm. People using the lakeside state park walk through your campsite to go use the campground bathroom and showers - hence the toilet paper issue in the bathroom. Unfortunately, some of those day picnickers think your stuff is free for the taking. NEVER LEAVE YOUR STUFF UNGUARDED. The numerous skunks are an unwelcomed camp amenity. Watch your children, cars go racing through the campground! If you are looking for stress free and peaceful, this is not the place. It is party central on the weekends. The staff leaves at random times, either 3 pm, 5 pm or 9 pm and then you are on your own. But don't worry, there is a sometimes functioning emergency phone outside the camp office. Oh yes, and there is no cell service in that area. Have fun. But I'm not going back. Are you sure you want to camp here?

    Jellystone Park™ Gardiner

    Great for beginners

The camp is set up in a “blank slate, parking lot” type style, with a big field, center for tent camping or to be used for sports or other activities. There’s a “lazy river” at one side and a small RV village on the other, and tent sites with water or dry tent camping. Restrooms are available with hot and cold running water, showers and toilets.

    Clean but very rude

We booked for one week with intentions to book for another extra week

When we arrived we had a bit of trouble finding our site and asked someone on a golf cart passing to help they did and were very kind

Later that night we were told there were complaints of us trying to park our truck on a trailer spot though we were there for a tent sight

Then the next 3 days consistently staff would drive/ walk past our sight starting rudely they must have thought we were camping in the truck.

Though the complaints we enjoyed our stay so we decided to walk to the office and ask to extend our stay for just one more week and they very rudely stopped our sentence and said they only allow a 7 day booking

We did not see a single camper leave the entire time And most people lived there permanently

And the one time we asked for the laundry they told us we have a 2 hour window we booked for 10 am and they booked another lady for 11 am in conclusion she was also extremely rude and when we arrived to switch our clothes over she stood there watching us I felt very rushed and when we went to take clothes out of the dryer we found them tossed on the floor still half wet

    Bathrooms were semi clean

Nice camp spot horribly rude people and staff

    Family friendly site

Decent location, not overrun with seasonal campers. We stayed for 3 nights, kids loved the area and playground. Wi-Fi was not so great unless we paid $6 a day for premium access. Nice activities for kids. Laundry was only accessible during business hours. Office staff were very friendly and there was a cafe on site.

West Point FMWR Lake Frederick Outdoor Recreation Area

    Beloved Family Spot

Yes, this is a military-only campground but, that doesn't take away from how incredible it is and that is properly advertised.

This place is incredible.  Being military-only keeps standards high, the campground clean and well maintained.  We've spent years here, with Dan & Janet but, are looking forward to returning this year under new management, as they enjoy retirement after many years of hard work. Boy, does their hard work show! They have poured so much love and attention into the building and maintaining of Lake Frederick!

Between rustic power-only campsites that give you a true camping experience and upgraded but, still simple cabins which allow campers of all ages and abilities to enjoy the outdoor experience, there is something for everyone.  The new docks around the swimming area create a safer swimming experience for even the most inexperienced swimmers, allowing them safe and obvious perimeters.  The bath house is always well stocked and clean, ready for end of the day cleanup and the laundry facilities are a great bonus for those of us who like to stay longer than a couple days.

You won't want for anything at Lake Frederick and it will be a great way to unplug, kick back and enjoy God's Creation!

    Jellystone Park™ Gardiner

    Chillaxing Getaway

We stayed at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort along the Walllkill River in Gardiner, NY, for a four-night chill-out vacation. We’re so glad we did!

Our site was called Riverfront Red Carpet. It was spacious, level, waterfront, and partially shaded thanks to some mature trees. Site#22 included a large concrete pad, picnic table, charcoal grill, and large fire ring. Everything was in great condition. It was nice having plenty of space to not be on top of our neighbors. We had full hookups with 50-amp electrical service- which all worked fine.

The entire park seemed to be well maintained and clean. There’s a small waterpark which seemed good for younger kids, an eatery, and ice cream shop. The camp store was well-stocked with food, camping supplies, and souvenirs. There is a game room and multiple bath houses(which we didn’t use). The park’s roadways are all paved and easy to navigate. Despite being nearly filled to capacity including tons of young children, the park was quiet each night with no noisy ‘bad campers.’

We found our interactions with the staff to be helpful and attentive. We really appreciate friendly staff.

Overall, this was a great stay at a great RV park. I’d only mention two negatives, neither was a big deal. It took 45-minutes to check-in. In fairness, we arrived at check-in time(3:00 PM) on a Sunday. There were a dozen other RVs checking in at the same time and they just weren’t equipped for that. Also, our Verizon cell service was practically non-existent and the park’s wifi service was just as horrible. If we needed connectivity, this would have been a major problem. I reduced a star in my review simply because it’s 2021 and wifi has become an expectation.

We booked on campspot.com and paid$196 per night+$35 to lock our site+$2 booking fee less a 20% promo discount.

Guide to Ridgefield

The Ridgefield area of Connecticut offers unique yurt camping experiences within the Hudson Valley region, with elevations ranging from 400 to 1,000 feet above sea level throughout surrounding camping areas. Located in the western portion of Connecticut, campers face moderate summer temperatures typically ranging between 70-85°F during peak camping season, with cooler nights in spring and fall requiring proper bedding and insulation.

What to do

Lake activities: Smith Point County Park provides both ocean and bay access within a short walk from campsites. "I love this campground! A short walk from the ocean to the bay, both accessible by walking from your campsite. No shade so be prepared to wake early if you're in a sweltering tent," notes Ali O.

Hiking trails: West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area offers trails near the campground for day hikes. "There are also many hikes which can be trekked straight from the campgrounds which is always a huge plus in my mind," mentions Ethan K. Some trails connect directly to lookout points with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Playground access: Jellystone Park Gardiner maintains multiple play areas for younger campers. "This campground is great for kids. It has a event just about every weekend with kid activity," says Jennifer I. The playground equipment includes climbing structures and activity areas suitable for various age groups.

What campers like

Tent site spacing: Wildwood State Park Campground offers diverse site layouts. "You can find sites that are less wooded and better suited to group camping, as well as sites that are a little more secluded," reports Giselle P. The platform sites allow campers to set up on concrete or wooden platforms rather than directly on the ground.

Clean facilities: Lake Compounce Campground maintains well-kept shower and bathroom areas. "Restrooms are clean and spacious. Showers are great. Whoever planned this campground is/was a camper," notes Diane R. The bathhouses are regularly maintained, unlike some other campgrounds in the region.

Yurt options near Ridgefield: Mountain Lakes Park offers comfortable yurt accommodations within reasonable driving distance. "Mountain Lakes park is a great place to camp within driving distance from NYC. A fun option available at Mountain lakes is to rent a yurt to camp in," shares Ethan K. These yurts provide a more substantial shelter option than tent camping.

What you should know

Military-only areas: Two campgrounds near Ridgefield restrict access to military personnel. "Unfortunately for me, Round Pond is camping reserved for active and retired military personnel only. We drove through and the whole space is rather large," explains Ethan K.

Bathroom maintenance issues: Lake Waramaug State Park Campground has mixed reviews regarding facilities. "There have been issues with the bathrooms off and on over the decades. It seems like they've finally fixed everything. Our trip of 7/27-28 showed everything was fine," reports G Y. Bathroom cleanliness appears inconsistent between visits.

Wildlife concerns: At several campgrounds, animals frequently visit sites. "There are lots of skunks and squirrels that will get into EVERYTHING even in a bin," warns Katrina M. Proper food storage in animal-proof containers prevents unwanted visitors from entering campsites.

Tips for camping with families

Pool amenities: Jellystone Park Gardiner features kid-friendly water areas. "Nice pool that is shallow so you can relax and let the little ones go in the water park section alone or they have a 3 ft pool also," shares Amanda S. The water park section offers a controlled environment for children to play.

Organized activities: Weekend schedules often include planned events for younger campers. "This campground has a lot of activities and has kids of all ages galore. I was worried my 12 year old would be too old for it but he enjoyed making friends there," reports Stephanie H.

Proximity to attractions: Multiple campgrounds offer access to nearby entertainment options. "We stayed there one weekend and went to Splish Splash waterpark that's not far away. There is also a Tanger Outlet nearby," explains Giselle P. These off-site activities provide alternatives during longer stays.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Riverdale Farm Campsites provides full hookup sites. "Most of the roads are paved, the sites are large and level, there are full hookups, and a dump station," notes Joel R. The site layout accommodates various RV sizes without difficulty.

Dump station access: Some parks limit sewer hookups but provide dump stations. "It is adjacent to an amusement park so there were lots of families here. None of the sites have sewer, but there is a dump station on the way out," explains Tina from Lake Compounce Campground. Planning for these limitations helps manage longer stays.

Site layout considerations: Many RV sites position units facing neighboring campers. "You will face your neighbor door to door but enough room between you don't feel invaded," observes Diane R. Privacy screens or strategic awning placement helps create more personal space between sites.
