    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Wells State Park Campground

    Rustic but not for RVs

Chose this spot to give us a rest on a trip to Canada (and again to go back to Maine to complete the vacation after we had truck trouble). Chose a pull-through to save time and effort. The first time we chose site 1 (pull through). This past weekend we chose site 38 (pull through).

A few weeks ago when we visited, site 1 was close to the entry gate, but was very confusing as a pull through. I just backed the trailer in. The next morning we saw that the "pull through" had not been maintained in several seasons. Tree limbs and brush intruded on the driveway. There was no way to get a truck and trailer through that without damage.

Yesterday we tried site 38. We had to take the camp road around the entire park, then enter the "loop" section. Even the "main" roads required my wife to watch as I cleared tree trunks; it was difficult to snake our little trailer around the bends. The driveway to site 38 was a mess. Tree limbs and brush invaded the drive, and there was nowhere level on the whole site. I used a record 9 blocks to get 4 levels high on the downhill wheel. When leaving we had to go out through the adjoining site, because there was no way we'd be able to make the turn out of the site onto the 10' wide tote road because of the trees.

A surcharge which makes it $50/night for non-MA residents, plus, no dump station on site and $7 for four pieces of firewood (go to the Walmart 2 miles away instead) will have us skip this place in the future, even if it's in a convenient place.

For those looking to vacation here. There was minimal cell phone coverage with Verizon. I could check messages but wouldn't try to stream. The highway is very loud (I-90 is across the lake). There are a lot of boggy areas and swamps which, although pretty, grew a lot of mosquitoes that kept my wife indoors. A lot of sites were fairly large and private. The beach area is close to the lower sites. Bathrooms and showers were tight and needed updating, but cleaned.

Guide to Newington

Camping opportunities near Newington, Connecticut include several full-service RV campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. The region features low rolling hills with elevations ranging from 150-250 feet above sea level and experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F. Most campgrounds in this area sit along wooded settings with seasonal operation between April and October due to Connecticut's winter weather patterns.

What to do

Kayaking opportunities: At Aces High RV Park in East Lyme, visitors can enjoy water activities. "There is a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun," notes April L.

Exploring historic sites: The Mystic area offers numerous attractions accessible from nearby campgrounds. "This park is in a great location for exploring Mystic. You are close to downtown, the aquarium, Mystic Seaport and other attractions," explains Nancy W. about Sun Outdoors Mystic.

Hiking trails: The Taconic State Park region provides excellent hiking options. "There is a huge area of woods with a walking trail starting at the edge of the campground. I enjoyed stretching my legs," reports Mara S. about Sturbridge. Local state parks like Gillette Castle are within driving distance of Salem Farms Campground.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many campers appreciate well-maintained amenities. "The bathrooms and showers are spotless and newly painted. Our site didn't have sewer, but the electric and water were working fine," writes Pam R. about her stay at Sun Outdoors Mystic.

Large sites with privacy: Salem Farms Campground gets high marks for spacious campsites. "Most sites are a good size. Fire pits are nice and big made with large rocks," notes Tracy D. The campground features 189 sites with both 50-amp and 30-amp electrical options.

Family-friendly amenities: Prospect Mountain Campground offers activities for children. "They have activities every weekend such as dances, bingo, hayrides. They also have a great pool, playground and pond for fishing. They also have a nice little store and snack bar," shares Sandra S.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds in the region operate between May and October. "We camped here with friends and got one of the 'buddy sites' so our patios faced each other. Our stay was in the spring before their busy season started so some things like the pool and water features were closed," explains Nancy W. about Sun Outdoors Mystic.

Site configurations: Lake Compounce Campground in Bristol has a unique layout. "The sites were long so even though you face your neighbor, the sites were long enough that our door wasn't directly across from our neighbor," notes Tina. Another camper adds, "You will face your neighbor door to door but enough room between you don't feel invaded."

Cell service variability: While many campgrounds offer reliable connectivity, some have limitations. "Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls," mentions Mara S. about her stay at Sturbridge RV Resort, which contrasts with other RV parks in the region.

Tips for camping with families

Look for dedicated children's areas: Many campgrounds offer kid-friendly features. "The kids had a blast fishing and riding their bikes around," shares Megin F. about Prospect Mountain Campground. The campground also features "a great pool, playground and pond for fishing."

Consider timing for activities: Weekday versus weekend stays can provide different experiences. "We stayed for 4 nights during the week, and it was the quietest campground we've ever stayed in. We were told by a seasonal that it's a whole different story on the weekend," explains Tracy D. about Totoket Valley RV Park.

Check for tent-specific areas: If tent camping with children, look for dedicated spaces. "I try to go here every summer with my two preteen grandsons. We tent close to the restroom and the pool, which are very clean," shares Heather P. about Salem Farms Campground, adding, "We go mid week and the special is pay 2 nights, get third night free."

Tips from RVers

Confirm hookup availability: Rudd Pond Area — Taconic State Park offers platforms for tent campers but also accommodates RVs. "Camper van off the grid. Large site with privacy, but not many campers early season," notes Lisa S. Make sure to verify which utilities are available at your specific site.

Check site dimensions: Many RV campgrounds near Newington have specific site configurations. "Clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio. Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should," reports Matt S. about Aces High RV Park.

Consider seasonal reservations: Some campgrounds offer extended stays. "We did a three month seasonal Site. Staff is super nice and helpful. We had a nice quiet spot even though we were on the road to the lake," explains John M. about Prospect Mountain Campground, adding "Wouldn't mind a seasonal lot but their waiting list is quite long!"
