Best RV Parks & Resorts near Litchfield, CT

Several RV parks near Litchfield accommodate various camping needs throughout the year. Cozy Hills Campground in Bantam offers 178 sites with full hookups including 30/50-amp electric service from April through mid-October. Sites are equipped with water, electric, and sewer connections, though spacing between units can be tight in some areas. "Sites were sized well and management spaced out the reservations so people camping together could be together," noted one visitor about a nearby park. Lake Compounce Campground in Bristol provides big-rig friendly sites with 50-amp service and water hookups from May through October, though it lacks sewer connections at individual sites. Branch Brook Campground features full hookup RV sites with drinking water, electric, and sewer connections, while Gentiles Campground in Plymouth remains open year-round with water, electric, and sewer hookups.

Most RV parks in the region require advance reservations, particularly during summer weekends and fall foliage season. Dump stations are available at several facilities, including Lake Compounce which offers a sanitary dump station near the exit. Cell service varies throughout the area, with stronger signals at parks closer to towns and more limited coverage in rural locations. Many campgrounds welcome pets with standard leash requirements, though Lake Taghkanic State Park across the border in New York restricts pets to specific camping areas. Winter camping options are limited, with most facilities closing between mid-October and April. One camper shared that "the park was clean and though the buildings and some equipment was old, it was well kept," highlighting the generally good maintenance standards despite some aging infrastructure at certain locations.

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

large family friendly campground with beach access

Hammonasset Beach State Park Campground is huge, family-friendly, and has direct beach access from the campground. There is no lifeguard on duty at the campground beach but lifeguards patrol the beach a mile or so north within the park. Smaller (car-top) boats can be launched from this area as well.

The campsites do NOT include a fire pit (or grill). You must bring your own or there are fire tub rentals available at the campground store.

The park includes a Nature Center complete with exhibits and activities, and hiking trails. Bald eagles can be seen on the nature reserve.

Expect long lines at the state park entrance fee station on the weekend if the weather is nice.

    Riverdale Farm Campsites

Great camping near Mystic off I-95

This is a really nice family campground just a mile or so off I-95 in Clinton, CT. It is about 20 miles from Mystic and the historic seaport center. Most of the roads are paved, the sites are large and level, there are full hookups, and a dump station. There are a lot of seasonal residents, but still plenty of open sites for travelers. There is a playground, game room, “adult ” lounge, a laundry, a swimming pond, and river access for fishing and swimming. Internet is an extra fee! ($6/day) The road into the campground is narrow and winding, so larger RV mss as y have trouble, but there were several of them there when we were there. There is a security gate at the entrance.

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

    Peaceful 4th of July 2020

This campsite is near the shore in my home state of CT. It took a little over an hour to get here. Our spot was near a large salt marsh.

The park and beach were full occupancy for campers without reservations. I saw no tents - maybe due to COVID. There are ample bathhouses but the one near me is locked up. I suspect the others may also be closed.

A pair of geese and their goslings came to visit. See video and pictures.

No campfires allowed without a fire pit. You can rent one at the small camp store for a $20 deposit plus $12 first night the $2 each night - pay in advance.

Sites are large and clean. My site has trees for shade and a place to hang my hammock. But the park officials made me take it down :(.

Water hookup but no electricity on our sites. Water for drinking only was on my site but you can’t connect with a hose to your camper in most of the less expensive sites. There are more expensive sites with full hookups but no Wi-Fi.

Price of my site is very affordable around $20 a night.

I saw 2 dump stations near exit. Supermarkets a few miles down the road.

Easy to walk to the beach. Plan to kayak. There is a boat launch at Meig’s Point where you can drive 100 feet from the water to unload from your car. Lovely small beaches, walkways and jetties for fishing or photos of nature.

    Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground

    Good for family car camping

Great beach, 5 minute drive from campgound. Clean facilities, with a rec room for rainy days. A camp store with all the supplies you might have forgotten.

One caveat: beware of site G006. The grill at the fire pit is upside down, so it doesn't hold level above the fire. Impossible to use. I had to MacGuyver it with a large rock and wedge the grill into place, and then level it with a log. We were lucky that I was able to find these things, otherwise we would have been cooking on our single stove that night. Also, this site was downwind, so occasionally was in the cloud of septic stench.

My advice would be to take the sites on the hill, nearest to the bathrooms, as all these sites seemed to be generally very well maintained.

Guide to Litchfield

Recreational vehicle camping options near Litchfield, Connecticut provide access to the rolling hills and woodlands of the Litchfield Highlands. Most campgrounds in this region sit at elevations between 700-1,200 feet, creating moderate temperature variations between day and night. Summer temperatures typically range from 60-85°F, with cooler evenings making campfires comfortable even during peak season.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Rudd Pond at Taconic State Park offers shoreline access and boat rentals. "There is plenty of fishing access from shore and you can rent a boat for the whole day to fish on the water. There is a lot of hiking in the area- def check out Bash Bish Falls!" says one visitor to Rudd Pond Area — Taconic State Park.

Swimming options: Many area campgrounds maintain swimming areas for campers. At Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground, "The lake is beautiful and clean. Expect to pay $15 fee to use your paddleboards/kayaks etc. Worth every penny," according to one reviewer. Another camper noted it was the "Best swimming experience ever!"

Stargazing spots: The Litchfield area offers excellent night sky viewing opportunities with minimal light pollution. "Late night, stargazing over the lake is a great pastime, because the water is calm and the light pollution is low," reports a visitor to Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground.

What campers like

Well-maintained facilities: Clean showers and bathrooms rank highly among camper priorities. At Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park, "The staff I encountered were all very friendly and helpful. It looked like the sites were close together, but I was there before there were leaves on the trees and could see how there would be more privacy once they filled out."

Family-friendly activities: Many campgrounds organize regular events. "Prospects mountain is a great campground for families with younger kids. They have activities every weekend such as dances, bingo, hayrides. They also have a great pool, playground and pond for fishing," notes one camper.

Platform tent sites: Several parks in the region feature wooden platforms for tent setup. A reviewer at Clarence Fahnestock State Park Campground explains, "This was our second time coming to this campground and our second time getting dumped on by the rain, but have no fear!! The platforms kept us off the ground and were helpful in setting up appropriate tarp protection!"

What you should know

Site privacy varies significantly: Many campgrounds feature a mix of secluded and exposed sites. At Lake Compounce Campground, a reviewer notes, "The sites were long so even though you face your neighbor, the sites were long enough that our door wasn't directly across from our neighbor."

Seasonal considerations: Most RV parks near Litchfield operate between May and October. Some exceptions exist, such as Gentiles Campground which remains open year-round, though with limited amenities in winter.

Reservation recommendations: For the most desirable sites, booking 2-3 months in advance is advised, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage season from late September through mid-October.

Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with kid-focused amenities: Many area campgrounds cater specifically to families. At Cozy Hills Campground, "The pool is very nice for families - with no deep end, really safe for younger kids. Bathrooms are very clean but very far apart."

Consider sites close to facilities: When camping with young children, proximity to bathrooms can be crucial. "My advice would be to take the sites on the hill, nearest to the bathrooms, as all these sites seemed to be generally very well maintained," suggests one camper at Lake Taghkanic State Park.

Pack for temperature fluctuations: The Litchfield Highlands can experience significant day-to-night temperature drops, sometimes 20-25 degrees. Layered clothing options will keep kids comfortable throughout changing conditions.

Tips from RVers

Dump station availability: Not all RV parks near Litchfield provide individual sewer connections. At Lake Compounce Campground, "None of the sites have sewer, but there is a dump station on the way out."

Seasonal site options: For longer stays, several campgrounds offer seasonal arrangements. At Interlake RV Park & Campground, "Some people stay here all summer. Close to FDR home and library...a must to see. Quaint towns nearby."

Site leveling considerations: The rolling terrain around Litchfield means many campgrounds have sloped sites. "Roads were narrow and steep and hard to maneuver bigger trailers and rigs," notes one visitor to Gentiles Campground, emphasizing the importance of leveling equipment for RVers in this region.
