Best RV Parks & Resorts near Avon, CT

RV campgrounds scattered throughout the region surrounding Avon provide various levels of accommodations and seasonal availability. Lake Compounce Campground in Bristol accommodates RVs with full water and electric hookups, offering 50-amp service for larger motorhomes. "Sites were large enough for RV. NO privacy," noted one camper about Lake Compounce, which operates from May through October. Other options include Aces High RV Park in East Lyme with full hookups, sanitary dump services, and big-rig friendly sites, while Totoket Valley RV Park in North Branford provides basic electric, water, and sewer connections but lacks shower facilities. Branch Brook Campground accommodates RVs with water and electric hookups in a drive-in setting that welcomes pets.

Many parks require advance reservations, especially during peak season from May through October when fall foliage attracts numerous visitors. Road access varies between facilities, with some parks featuring narrow internal roads that present challenges for larger motorhomes. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, several campgrounds face congestion issues during summer weekends, with one visitor describing Wolf's Den as "Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers." Dump stations are available at most RV parks in the region, though availability may be seasonal, with Lake Compounce's operating from May through October. Pet policies generally allow dogs with proper leashing and cleanup requirements. Cell service tends to be reliable throughout most of the area's developed RV parks.

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Wells State Park Campground

    Rustic but not for RVs

Chose this spot to give us a rest on a trip to Canada (and again to go back to Maine to complete the vacation after we had truck trouble). Chose a pull-through to save time and effort. The first time we chose site 1 (pull through). This past weekend we chose site 38 (pull through).

A few weeks ago when we visited, site 1 was close to the entry gate, but was very confusing as a pull through. I just backed the trailer in. The next morning we saw that the "pull through" had not been maintained in several seasons. Tree limbs and brush intruded on the driveway. There was no way to get a truck and trailer through that without damage.

Yesterday we tried site 38. We had to take the camp road around the entire park, then enter the "loop" section. Even the "main" roads required my wife to watch as I cleared tree trunks; it was difficult to snake our little trailer around the bends. The driveway to site 38 was a mess. Tree limbs and brush invaded the drive, and there was nowhere level on the whole site. I used a record 9 blocks to get 4 levels high on the downhill wheel. When leaving we had to go out through the adjoining site, because there was no way we'd be able to make the turn out of the site onto the 10' wide tote road because of the trees.

A surcharge which makes it $50/night for non-MA residents, plus, no dump station on site and $7 for four pieces of firewood (go to the Walmart 2 miles away instead) will have us skip this place in the future, even if it's in a convenient place.

For those looking to vacation here. There was minimal cell phone coverage with Verizon. I could check messages but wouldn't try to stream. The highway is very loud (I-90 is across the lake). There are a lot of boggy areas and swamps which, although pretty, grew a lot of mosquitoes that kept my wife indoors. A lot of sites were fairly large and private. The beach area is close to the lower sites. Bathrooms and showers were tight and needed updating, but cleaned.

    Highland Campground

    Older but lots to do

The campground is older, and the roads/driveways need work. For those looking for newer facilities, this isn't the place. There are no 50 amp sites. The rec hall and the bath houses are old, but we don't mind the old fashioned spots at times. Reminds me of camping as a kid. There are a lot of activities for the kids and adults. Shuffleboard, bocci ball, fishing, bingo, playground, pit luck dinners, etc. There is wifi available.

There are a lot of seasonal campers which can sometimes feel like you're intruding on their space. There is a page of rules to follow, the seasonals ignore them.

There is no black water hookup, only gray water. You have to have them clean out the black or dump on the way out.

Guide to Avon

Camping options near Avon, Connecticut range from rustic state forest sites to full-service RV parks. The region experiences hot summers with temperatures averaging 75-85°F from June through August, while spring and fall offer milder camping conditions with occasional rain. Most campgrounds in the area sit at elevations between 300-1,000 feet, creating varied terrain for campers seeking different experiences.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Rudd Pond Area — Taconic State Park, you can catch largemouth bass from shore or by boat. "The sites were a little close together, but being able to fish and catching 2 decent-sized largemouth bass made everything all ok!! There is plenty of fishing access from shore and you can rent a boat for the whole day to fish on the water," notes one visitor.

Water activities: Many rv parks near Avon, Connecticut offer ponds for swimming and boating during summer months. "Great beach, 5 minute drive from campgound. Clean facilities, with a rec room for rainy days. A camp store with all the supplies you might have forgotten," mentions a camper at Lake Taghkanic State Park.

Hiking trails: Austin Hawes Memorial Campground provides access to multiple hiking paths. "If you like nice big private sites, peace and quiet while providing a great location for fishing and hiking (Henry Buck Trail) then this is your kind of place," shares a reviewer who visited this campground near Avon.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many Avon area campsites maintain well-kept bathrooms and showers. "Showers are hot and there's great water pressure. The cleanliness of the bathrooms depends on how busy the campground is," reports a visitor at Lake Taghkanic.

Family activities: Prospect Mountain Campground offers numerous recreation options. "They have activities every weekend such as dances, bingo, hayrides. They also have a great pool, playground and pond for fishing. They also have a nice little store and snack bar," explains one camper who visited with children.

Spacious sites: At Aces High RV Park, campers appreciate the site layouts. "Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors," notes a reviewer who stayed at this Connecticut RV park.

What you should know

Limited connectivity: Cell service varies significantly at campgrounds around Avon. "My one complaint is how bad the cell reception is. Normally, I'd say that's a perk for camping but we're full-timers and work on the road so it is important for us," shares a camper who stayed at Sturbridge RV Resort.

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds in the Avon region fill quickly during summer weekends and fall foliage season. "CG is pretty empty during the week and gets busy during the weekend," notes a visitor at Lake Compounce Campground.

Bathroom facilities: Totoket Valley RV Park has hookups but lacks certain amenities. "Small campground with good electrical, clean water, sewer and a friendly owner. Each site has grass and a picnic table," explains a reviewer, but the park doesn't offer shower facilities.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Look for campgrounds with dedicated swimming areas. "Camper van off the grid. Large site with privacy, but not many campers early season. New bath house with multiple shower rooms. Wonderful hiking trails. Pond for fishing & swimming. Kiddie pond, children's playground," reports a visitor at Taconic State Park.

Playground access: Lake Compounce Campground offers recreational facilities. "They have a small playground, activities, tennis court, basketball. Not to mention its next to the amusement park," mentions a reviewer, though they note tent spots are small and close together.

Rainy day activities: Consider campgrounds with indoor options for wet weather. "This campground was one of the best I've been to. They have both platform and dirt tent sites, all sites come equipped with fire pits. The bathrooms and showers are clean and the water stayed hot until the last weekend of the season," shares a camper who appreciated having recreation facilities during inclement weather.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: RV parks around Avon offer varying levels of privacy. "Clean, family friendly campground. Pet friendly with plenty of area to walk. Close to I-95 and 15 minutes from the beach. Fishing areas for the kids. Spots are well organized and no issues with hookups," notes a reviewer at Aces High RV Park.

Hookup availability: Most RV parks near Avon provide water and electric connections. "Easy entry, long pull thrus. You will face your neighbor door to door but enough room between you don't feel invaded. Restrooms are clean and spacious. Showers are great," explains an RVer who stayed at Lake Compounce Campground.

Access considerations: Some campgrounds have limitations for larger rigs. "Not my favorite place. Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls," cautions a reviewer about Sturbridge RV Resort, where internal road layouts may present challenges for some RVs.
