We found two decent sites here. One had really great views but was pretty windy and dusty. The other one had a ton of trash and cigarette butts. Lots of OHV noise. Close to Sedona, but we found Sedona to be very overrated. Some pretty hiking but very crowded, expensive, and touristy. Definitely would not return!
We made the mistake of booking a site that we were supposed to park and “hike” in to set up. It was pretty much a group site with other people that you’re not in group with… The party next to us also made the mistake of booking one of these sites with a rooftop tent so we had the pleasure of camping right next to people who should have been wearing CPAP at night. We snagged a spot in a FCFS campground the next morning and were much happier!
We were lucky enough to grab a pretty private spot, but most sites here are on top of each other. It also seems a high price to pay for one pit toilet you have to hike to and not much site maintenance. We learned of some better dispersed sites down the road and would recommend checking that out over staying at Hamburger Rock.
If you have a 4x4 vehicle and can make your way toward the trailhead for south Mt Elbert, there are some amazing spots. A few spots allow you to pull off and set up a tent with great views. The site we stayed in was about 50 ft from the trailhead and could accommodate a group! It was right on the end of Lily Ponds, so a bit buggy, but absolutely beautiful and very private. Also a great point to start your hike from!
Tons of dispersed camping, though many sites are on top of each other. If you have a capable vehicle and can make your way back toward the water tower, there is a large private camp area with beautiful views. Very windy! Definitely a rough road.
We showed up midday on 6/7 and almost every site was available. They are all well maintained, many have a lot of privacy, and some have great views. We grabbed site 39 and had an amazing view of Mt Crested Butte! Many sites we checked out had their own private ponds, rivers, etc. We found this to be a great place to stay while still being close enough to town and many beautiful hikes in the area.
