Molas Lake Park & Campground's spacious pet-friendly camping area offers 62 sites for both tent and RV campers, with dogs permitted throughout the campground. Pets must be leashed at all times when outside vehicles or tents. Several dispersed camping options including Kendall Camping Area and Golden Horn Dispersed also welcome pets with fewer restrictions but require owners to manage waste properly. The spots along Kendall's creek provide a soothing sound for sleeping while dogs enjoy splashing in the water. Most campgrounds in the Silverton area maintain standard pet policies requiring leashes no longer than 6 feet, current vaccinations, and immediate waste cleanup. Full-service RV parks like Silverton Lakes RV Resort accommodate pets but warn they will strictly enforce rules against excessive barking during quiet hours.
Mineral Creek Trail and numerous surrounding hiking paths provide excellent opportunities for exercising dogs while camping near Silverton. Many dispersed camping areas allow off-leash dogs in more remote locations, though wildlife encounters remain a concern. The Kendall Camping Area features several spots hidden among trees that provide natural shade important for dogs during summer months. Campers report good Verizon cell service throughout most pet-friendly sites, allowing for emergency veterinary contact if needed. During peak season (June through September), pet-friendly campgrounds fill quickly, especially those with creek access where dogs can cool off. Pet owners should pack extra water for higher elevation camping, as dehydration risks increase at Silverton's 9,300+ foot elevation. The 4x4 trails accessing some dispersed sites require appropriate vehicles but reward with secluded camping ideal for reactive dogs.

"I've spent quite a bit of time at various sites around this campground during annual vacations and using it as a base for geological field work nearby."

Great campground just 10 minutes from Silverton. Several spots are right next to a small stream, creating a peaceful atmosphere. The vault toilet helped us conserve water, and we used the public shower/bathroom in Silverton, which was very convenient. It's also close to many hiking trails, making it a great base for outdoor activities.
Found a great dispersed campsite near Silverton Co. Golden Horn dispersed camping area is located about 5 miles from Silverton Co. This camping area is at 9600' elevation. Head north on HWY 550 out of Silverton and turn onto FSR 585 along South Mineral Creek, There are several boondocking sites packed into this 5 mile stretch. This time of year (July), many are occupied and full. We arrived on a Thursday morning to find only one space available at this dispersed campground. Sites are covered in river rock. Nothing is level, so bring the right gear to manage that if it's important to you. There is a vault toilet, bring your own tp. Generators hum all day and deep into the night. T-Mobile 5G/4G somewhat available. Access to several trails are nearby. Recommend off-road capable vehicle to get to Rico-Silverton trailhead.
Love the area. We parked close to the road tucked in some trees. Wanted to be by the water but it was taken by multiple coach RVs. Road noise is fairly loud during the day, but for free I won’t complain (too much). Dispersed camping area only. Has a pit toilet but that’s about it. About 10 minutes from Silverton.
A wonderful meadow near Bandera Mine in the San Juan Mountains. From Silverton, CO, take CR7 past the South Mineral Campground. It is about two miles up the road. You will know when you are there when you see the three tier beaver pond and couple of old mining buildings.
About 5 or so miles from Silverton. 14 day limit. Nice shady spots if you turn immediately off the entrance road when you first come in, make left immediately cool hidden spots if not taken. Fire pits, pit toilet, wood scattered, beautifully green mountains, and trees. The creek is fairly large. No water, or garbage. Cool at night. AT&T 2 bars pretty much everywhere.
Tent camped here at campsite 8 for five nights. Very nice tents sites but after traveling the country I felt it sucked because showers were $5 for a four minute shower and the toilets were basically glorified holes in the ground. Beautiful sights everywhere. Not far from Silverton and the OHV routes.
My wife and I stayed here in March of 2022. The campground was awesome and there didn’t seem to be a bad spot in the entire loop. Good views of the San Juan Mountains to the south! Power hook-ups were nice, but no water hook-ups during “winter” months. With that said, there was community spigots located near the campsites that were still on if you need to top off your fresh water tanks. The dump station was also nice, but no running water there during the winter either.
The location of this place was perfect for us as we were there for skiing; One hour from Telluride, one hour from Silverton, and only 30 minutes from the Red Mountain backcountry skiing area.
Ridgway Colorado is only a few miles down the road if you need gas or supplies, and Ouray is just past that if you’re looking for great restaurants and breweries.
Our family vacation destination- would provide 6 stars if a could. Main features- pool, great family play areas, huge lots and shaded lots- not really a bad spot. Pond, 2 Acre dog park- beautiful sites and quick drive to town or off-road. We stayed here twice because a bad experience in Silverton
Dispersed camping options near Silverton provide a budget-friendly way to explore this historic mining region situated at over 9,300 feet elevation. Located in Colorado's San Juan Mountains, the Silverton area offers camping access year-round, though winter conditions can be severe with temperatures frequently dropping below freezing. Most dispersed campsites lack facilities but serve as excellent bases for exploring nearby high-alpine trails.
Fishing opportunities: The streams and lakes around Silverton offer productive fishing spots for anglers. At Little Molas Lake Campground, campers report seeing "big ones being caught, including by an osprey!" according to Nicholas V. The nearby Priest Lake area has small brook trout, though some visitors note limited success: "We switched to a smaller dry fly to mimic what was hatching and we caught one fish. A super small brook trout, very pretty and very feisty."
Ghost town exploration: Several abandoned mining sites surround Silverton for history enthusiasts. Near Ironton Park Dispersed, "The old town site has been preserved and there are many old buildings to the south of the camping area to explore and the old railroad line built by Otto Mears, (the man who built HWY 550, the Million dollar highway), follows the old creek and the road that enters the area," explains Don S. Alta Lakes Campground visitors can explore another ghost town site where "you can see them and experience what used to be."
High-elevation hiking: Multiple trailheads connect to extensive trail networks. Molas Lake Park has "easy access to major hiking trails right within the campground," notes Tyler M. For families, Telluride Town Park Campground offers convenient access where "The Colorado Trail runs through the campground and whether you do a quick toddler hike to the waterfall or a much longer hike down to the river there is just so much to do here and to explore."
Creek-side camping: Sites adjacent to flowing water are highly sought after for ambient sound and scenery. At Kendall Camping Area, Sarah L. describes "a flowing creek" that creates "a beautiful area" for camping. Another camper mentions that "the creek is just awesome!! Saw Moose in the creek, very cool!!" The spots with water access fill quickly in summer months, especially when temperatures rise.
Dark skies for stargazing: The relative isolation from urban areas creates exceptional night viewing conditions. Davis F. noted that at Molas Lake Park, "the stargazing was some of the best I've seen." Similarly, visitors to Priest Lake Dispersed Camping Area report that "the stars were BEAUTIFUL! This is a great spot for stargazers too." The high elevation contributes to clearer viewing conditions when skies are cloud-free.
Wildlife encounters: The mountain environment supports diverse wildlife viewing opportunities. At Little Molas Lake, campers have spotted lynx near the shoreline. Kendall Camping Area visitors report seeing moose in the creek, while deer sightings are common throughout the region. One Ironton Park camper notes hearing "a pack of coyotes very close by making a lot of noise after dark. It was unsettling and awesome at the same time."
Road conditions: Many dispersed sites require navigating rough roads. Accessing Alta Lakes Campground requires preparation as "the road to Alta can get rough after heavy rain and at the end of the season." One visitor advises: "4WD recommended for the drive up - water crossings and some good ruts." Some sites like Kendall Camping Area have short dirt roads "in Great condition" while others demand high-clearance vehicles.
Weather extremes: Even summer nights can be very cold at these elevations. Davis F. warns that at Molas Lake, "the campsite is over 10,000 feet, weather can change quickly and it got cold during the night. Bring the appropriate gear and you will have no problems." Another camper mentions that "Temps were nice too, considering where we live it's HOT, this was a nice cool retreat."
Seasonal availability: Access to higher sites is limited by snow until late spring. Little Molas Lake Campground operates seasonally, with one visitor noting you should "make sure you look online as to the opening and closing season dates, because it usually opens later due to the higher elevation in which it is located." Road conditions can deteriorate rapidly with snow or heavy rain.
Kid-friendly water features: Several sites offer shallow water areas safe for supervised play. At Matterhorn Campground, "There are Two mountain lakes about a mile away and stream next to campgrounds" that provide safe places for children to explore. Priest Lake is described as "really quite shallow and it's very close to the sites. It's a pretty place with very scenic views."
Wildlife education opportunities: The diverse animal sightings create natural learning experiences. Molas Lake campers report regular deer visits through campsites, while higher elevation sites occasionally have moose sightings. One family mentioned that "watching the ducks and geese and the occasional deer, it was pretty cool."
All-ages activities: Town-adjacent sites provide easier access to family amenities. Telluride Town Park Campground has "a kids fishing pond with a sign that says you can rent gear" and "a small waterfall just steps from it," making it ideal for mixed-age groups. Another camper noted "the ability to let the teenagers have some freedom wandering town and taking the gondola to Mountain Village was more than worth it."
Site selection for larger rigs: Not all dispersed areas can accommodate big RVs. At Golden Horn Dispersed, "We fit in a super C (semi truck rv) 41ftL x 13.5ftH with 30ft trailer without having to unhook. Right by the river." When visiting Ironton Park Dispersed, one RVer advises "If you arrive from the south on highway 550 you will need to enter the parking lot for the Corkscrew jeep trail and turn around (heading back south) as all the entrances into Ironton are a very sharp Right hand switch-back and difficult unless you have less than a 20 foot RV."
Pet management at high elevation: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Silverton require attention to pet hydration and exercise. Matterhorn Campground's pet-friendly sites are located near streams but require that owners bring extra water supplies for dogs to prevent altitude-related dehydration. Campers at Kendall mention that many spots are "very dispersed" with "plenty of space between sites" making them suitable for leashed pets.
Generator considerations: At altitude, equipment performs differently. One RVer at Little Molas Lake noted that "Elevation is about 10,300 and posed a problem for our generator that caused severe spark-plug fouling. But, re-jetting the carburetor from a #61 to #58 solved the problem." Most pet-welcoming campgrounds around Silverton have minimal generator restrictions, but campers should respect quiet hours.
