Best RV Parks & Resorts near La Veta, CO

La Veta RV options include Circle the Wagons RV Park with full hookups including 50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections suitable for larger motorhome sites. Sammies RV Park operates year-round, offering electric, sewer, and water hookups within the town limits. "Easy spot over the border in Colorado. We were there as a jump off to head further West from North Texas area and made it well before dark to hook up," noted one camper about Circle the Wagons. Both parks provide amenities for rv sites, though Circle the Wagons has more developed facilities with showers, toilets, and trash service compared to Sammies' more basic setup. Sites at Circle the Wagons include picnic tables and permit fires, making it popular among travelers exploring the Spanish Peaks region.

Access to several parks requires attention to navigation details, as GPS directions can be unreliable in this mountainous area. A review mentioned needing to "back my trailer a couple of blocks" due to a creek bisecting the street with no bridge—information worth noting when planning arrival with larger rigs. Most RV parks in the region accommodate big rig spots, though site leveling may be necessary on some uneven terrain. During peak summer months, advance reservations are recommended, especially for premium sites. Dump stations are available at most parks, though wintertime travelers should check for seasonal closures or frozen water hookups. Between October and April, travelers should prepare for potential weather challenges, as mountain passes can experience sudden snow conditions affecting road access to campsites.

    Bear Lake Campground (CO)

    High Altitude Lake Site

This campsite run by the National Forest Service is about two hours drive west of Trinidad Colorado and about 45 minutes from the small town of La Veta. The site is accessed off of scenic highway 12. You drive about 5 miles up a step dirt and gravel road with multiple switchback to reach near lake. This is the sister camp to blue lake campground about 1 mile down the mountain road. Bear lake is a beautiful mountain fishing lake at about 11,000 feet altitude. The site is very popular for families in the summer looking for great camping and even better fishing. The lake is full of trout and many campers were hitting their 4 fish limit. The site has better views of the mountain peaks than blue lake. The campsites have some privacy depending on the site. This place is very popular and reservations are a must in the summer months. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and ample parking for two cars or a van. They have great trails for hiking and ATVs here and campers frequently run into bears. So you need to prepare and take the necessary precautions. The site is also popular for ATVs. So would will need to prepare for vehicles running through the camp.

Piñon Campground — Lathrop State Park

Lathrop State Park has a little of everything

We have visited this park several times, in the summer, spring and fall. The campground provides a nice visitors center, two small lakes (one non-wake), a sand beach, paved and unpaved bike trails, fishing, a kids fishing pond, trails, and electric or no-hook-up camping. The campground is divided into three loops with each loop containing flush toilets and shower facilities. A tent-only campground is situated closer to the highway, while the three loops are far from the road and provide ample star-gazing experiences. Favorite spots include 102 (has a great view of the Spanish Peaks), and site 84 (private pull-through with junipers and other short trees to block the road/other campers). I have attended several ranger programs here and hiked on all trails. Playing on the beach and picnicking is enhanced by the water stations to wash off the sand, benches, picnic tables, and shade trees. Kayaking on the no-wake lake is peaceful and fishing is abundant. Bike riding is simple and mostly flat. A fully paved trail circles the lake and is accessible by the campgrounds. A public, 9-hole golf course sits directly next to the park. The course is inexpensive and fun for an afternoon or morning. If you've exhausted all your options at the park itself, head one hour away to the Great Sand Dunes National Park to "surf" on the dunes and learn about this beautiful area. This park truly has a little of everything and while it is one of the oldest state parks in Colorado, it is well-maintained and enjoyable year-round.

    Aspen Acres Campground

    Well maintained & staffed

This was a delightful experience for us. There are sites for every type of camper: tent, trailer, RV, glamping and cabins. This is a somewhat small but well maintained private campground with lots of simple amenities. All is the wooded back-in sites have full hook-ups (30A) and there are pull-thru sites (Ithink they are still 30A). The center wooded area is perfect for tents. A small dog park gave our girls the chance to run free for a little. There is a shower house with bathrooms that are well maintained. Trash is kept tidy and didn’t smell even on the 97 degree day. Very easy to access but no road noise (at least not at our site).

We have a 26’ trailer and stayed in site 18. It was near the end of the row and relatively quiet. We only wish we had a longer power cable. (Our next purchase!) Our port is at the back and the outlet was way up front. To reach, we had to set up near the front of the site which limited our parking. Just pointing that out for others who might be ill prepared too.

We were too far away to take advantage of WiFi which is fine, we just wandered up near the office to check our texts once daily. It might be more accessible if you are located closer to the office. No cell service for Verizon. Personally, I was happy to be unplugged for a couple of days!

Although we had a fire ban in effect, we were able to rent a propane fire pit from the office. Be super cautious and check fire restrictions for Custer County. (http://oem.custercountygov.com/firecon.htm)

Aspen Acres has a lot more staff than I expected and they patrolled frequently. Very helpful and friendly.

5 minutes from Bishops Castle and 10 minutes from Lake Isabel ($7 day use fee). Easy drive up from I-25 but fairly steep in spots if that is problematic.

    We will stay again!

Carpios Ridge Campground — Trinidad Lake State Park

    Beautiful Park

Nice, level gravel sites. Only a handful of FHU’s. Most are water/electric in the section nearest the ranger station. Lots of electric only sites in a pretty area with Great Lake views. Many tent sites. This campground has a laundry facility with 3 washers and 3 dryers. Also has vending machines with snacks and cold drinks. Restrooms are super clean. You have to pay to take a shower, it takes quarters only and based on time. There are great hiking trails and you can hike to the lake. Sites are fairly close together, and many are not long enough for large RV’s. This is an expensive park that is well maintained. We paid $41 a night for a FHU, and on top of that there is a $9 per day park entrance fee.

    Mosca Campground

    Beautiful view

One of few places to camp close to Great Sand Dunes NP in winter months. Electric sites with semi-covered picnic table and fire pits. I think toliet were closed for the season but didn’t try. Colorado hunting/fishing license required for sites

Piñon Campground — Lathrop State Park

    Views for Miles

We stayed here the first week o f November 2020. Not all sites were open and the park was not crowded at all. The bathrooms were open and the weather was beautiful. The sites are all pull through and private. We had lots of space behind us to stretch out in. A picnic table was also placed in a space where shade would be provided on a concrete slab. Electric and water at the site and a dump station at the exit.

Guide to La Veta

La Veta sits at 7,037 feet elevation in the Cuchara Valley, backed by the dramatic Spanish Peaks. Winter camping requires preparation for temperatures that regularly drop below freezing, while summer brings mild days with cool evenings. Several camping options surround this historic coal mining town, with sites varying from basic tent spots to full-service RV connections.

What to do

Mountain hiking access: Within driving distance of Sand Dunes Recreation, campers can explore nearby wilderness areas. "Tons to do if you like the outdoors in the Spanish Peaks region," notes a visitor who stayed at Circle the Wagons.

Hot springs swimming: After outdoor activities, the thermal pools at Sand Dunes Recreation offer relaxation. "The Hot springs consist of a large outdoor pool and a couple of smaller pools. It's $15 to soak or half price if you camp there," explains one camper.

Wildlife viewing: The Stonewall area provides opportunities for animal sightings. "Even got a dusk field trip to see the wildlife," reports a camper at Stonewall Lodge & RV Park. "Deer walking thru the campground at dusk was a neat site."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Travelers appreciate well-maintained campgrounds like Cool Sunshine RV Park in Alamosa. "This place is clean. Lots of extras here. Green grass and leveled parking. Bathroom was good the shower was hot," writes one reviewer.

Helpful staff: Many rv parks near La Veta, Colorado receive high marks for customer service. "Very friendly lady in office. Small park but nice for a little city park," notes a Cool Sunshine guest. Similarly, at Stonewall Lodge, a camper praised the "Clean friendly staff/owner. Larry is the man."

Convenience to attractions: Gears RV Park and Cafe positions travelers for regional exploration. "We've stayed at the park several times traveling between New Mexico and Colorado. Right at mile marker 30 on Rt 25 in CO, there are full hook ups, amazing views, and a terrific little cafe with great food and clean bathrooms," explains one visitor.

What you should know

Train noise: Several campgrounds experience railroad disruptions. At Cool Sunshine RV Park, "it is right next to the railroad tracks. The train whistle is deafening and will rattle your teeth. 5 trains came by the one night, one as late as 10 pm."

GPS challenges: Navigation systems often provide incorrect directions in mountainous areas. As one camper at Circle the Wagons warned, "GPS won't get you here because 2nd Street is bisected by a creek with no bridge. I had to back my trailer a couple of blocks."

Seasonal closures: Many La Veta area RV parks operate seasonally. Circle the Wagons operates "May 1 to mid Oct," so winter travelers have fewer options. Blanca RV Park remains open year-round and provides "all the creature comforts and a gas station" for those needing winter accommodations.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access: Sand Dunes Recreation offers water-based entertainment. "The pools are artesian hot springs. The pools are extremely kid friendly, and there are greenhouses with 21+ soaking and bar. Camping is 20 bucks a night and you get half off camping when you camp here."

Playground options: Some parks provide dedicated play areas. Stonewall Lodge has a "Nice play area for children and a kitchen and a campfire area in the middle of campground," making it suitable for family trips.

Budget-friendly activities: Outdoor recreation near La Veta offers affordable family entertainment. As one Sand Dunes Recreation visitor shared, "We get a weekend away for about 80 bucks for two nights and swimming, and we can bring our kids and dog....it's a winner!"

Tips from RVers

Site spacing considerations: Many parks have tight layouts. At Tower 64 Motel & RV Park, "the sites are stacked right on top of each other. We could barely fit our 24 ft rig in our spot."

Water temperature quirks: Hot springs can affect campground utilities. At Sand Dunes Recreation, "if you have an rv and hook up to the water, it is fed from the hot springs so the water is always very warm. Didn't get to test out our hot water heater at this location!"

Leveling requirements: Prepare for uneven terrain at several RV parks in the La Veta region. Tower 64 features "narrow sites which are extremely uneven," while at Cool Sunshine, visitors appreciate the "level sites" that make setup easier.
