    Mueller State Park Campground

    Great Amenities

We love this CG!  It is in a beautiful part of Colorado, centrally located to many attractions.  The CG itself is large, but spread out well.  All sites are paved and fairly level, all have electricity and there are even a few cabins for rental.  What makes this park great is the huge trail system, trails are all around and all at various levels of difficulties and lengths.  Wildlife is abundant and the sites themself are well maintained.  Each site has a fire ring, electrical hook up and picnic table.  Water spigots are nearby, RV dump is included with stay (and you can fill up with fresh water too).  They have a laundromat and shower house as well as several bathrooms located throughout the campground with flush toilets.  They have nightly educational programs and the rangers have always been polite to us.  Firewood is available for sale at the CG entrance.

    Mingus Ranch

    Rustic Cabin

National forest cabin that is affordable. Very rustic with no water and only one outlet. Cabin has an outhouse that is fifty feet from cabin. Located in a great area with San Isabel lake and Bishops castle near by. Lots of hiking and off roading near by. Two bedrooms upstairs and day bed down. Interesting history to the cabin, read about it before you go.

    Mountaindale Cabin & RV Resort

    Peaceful Camping near the Mountains

This is a lovely park about 30 minutes south of Colorado Springs. We camped here for 5 nights in a back in spot with full hookups, site 51. The site was extremely spacious with room to park our truck to the side and still have a big yard. There is a fire pit and picnic table and we were shaded by some big pines. We saw deer wander around the campsites every morning and evening. The sites are terraced so that everyone has a beautiful view. There is no cell service for AT&T or T-Mobile, but you are able to do wifi calling with their WiFi and we streamed a movie one night. From here we visited Garden of the Gods, Royal Gorge and Pike’s Peak, all within 30 minutes to one hour’s drive. The bathhouse is extremely clean, with several private bathroom/shower rooms. There is also a laundry with 4 washers & dryers. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the folks are all friendly. I highly recommend!

    Mueller State Park Campground

    Absolutely Wonderful

This is less than thirty minutes from my house, but feels like a world away. Spots are close but private and paved pads make leveling easy. Most sites are pull through along the road and include electric. Back in sites are also available. The campground was full even with the snow and cold in early September. There are very few undesirable spots within the grounds, and the group sites are exceptional.

Vault and flush toilets are available at various locations through the campground, and there is a self-service dump station available at the front of the campground. We did run into the issue of people dumping buckets of waste in the dump station and not washing everything down, so look before you step.

Tent pads are large platforms filled with pea gravel, and include well maintained picnic tables and fire rings. The grounds and campsites are beautifully maintained and wonderful views of the surrounding mountains are plentiful.

Watch out for wildlife and be sure to read restrictions and rules on the maps provided at the gate - use and closures change seasonally.

    Arrowhead Point Resort

    Great campground!

This campground is right off the road and easy to find. They had RV sites in the front of the camp and tent sites up the road. We had showers and laundry, general store and wood for sale. Our site was very nice with lots of room. We had a picnic table and a fire pit in the site. There were a few portable bathrooms that were super clean available for night time runs.

    Great views of the mountains!

    BV Overlook

    Dump Run by Crooks

This campground is an absolute dump run by dishonest crooks. We stayed here in October on a night that it got below freezing and snowed. We were put in a cabin that had a 2-inch gap between the bottom of the door and threshold. The heater was more like a hair dryer and didn’t warm the cabin. It was 40 degrees in the cabin so we didn’t sleep. The floor crunched while walking on it and the platform bed was metal. When we got off the bed there was a loud bang. When we tried to get a refund from the owners she blamed us and said the problem was we didn’t understand rustic cabins. We have stayed in rustic cabins in the cold months for 10 years and never experienced this. There are many places in Buena Vista…take your business elsewhere.

    Sand Dunes Recreation

    It’s a parking lot

I got to my “campsite” in the overflow tent section… it was literally a giant open dirt lot. No trees, no picnic tables, just sad fire pits and nothing else. I didn’t even end up staying the night here. I drove to Great Sand Dunes Oasis and got a site with actual trees and a table. If I had wanted to sleep in a parking lot, I would’ve parked at a walmart. The bathrooms were pretty nice, although they were realllly far away from the sites. I didn’t check out the pool or restaurant.

Guide to Howard

Camping cabins near Howard, Colorado sit at elevations between 7,000-8,000 feet in the Arkansas River Valley. Summer temperatures typically range from 45-80°F with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms common in July and August. Several cabin accommodations remain open beyond the typical summer season, with some facilities like Monarch Spur RV Park operating from May through November.

What to do

River activities: 4 miles from campgrounds. The Arkansas River offers prime fishing and rafting opportunities near many Howard cabin sites. At Rocky Top River Ranch, campers can fish "steps from our campsite" according to one visitor who "had a blast fishing" right from the property. The ranch's 9 sites provide direct river access.

Hot springs soaking: Multiple locations. Several cabin properties near Howard include access to natural hot springs. Valley View Hot Springs features "about 12 beautiful pools" with "total access to all hot springs, bathrooms, showers, sauna, AND a communal outdoor kitchen." A visitor noted the property has "wonderful landscape and the soaking pools throughout."

Mountain hiking: Seasonal trails. Cabin guests can access numerous hiking trails in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Near Monarch Spur RV Park, the Colorado Trail passes just "a mile up the road" from the campground, making it a convenient basecamp for section hikers. The park's 8,000+ foot elevation provides excellent access to alpine trails.

What campers like

Mountain views: Continental Divide visible. Many cabins offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. At Pleasant Valley RV Park, visitors enjoy "great views of the continental divide and relaxing sound of the river" from their accommodations. One camper called it "a hidden camping gem" that "feels peaceful and secluded."

Family-friendly activities: On-site options. Cabin properties often include various recreational amenities. Cutty's Resort - Hayden Creek provides "lots of outdoor activities on site: mini golf, tetherball, swimming pool, play areas, cornhole, etc." Another visitor mentioned "the pools on site were perfect for the kids. On site mini golf was a blast."

Natural springs: Clothing optional locations. Some cabin properties feature natural hot springs with clothing-optional policies. Valley View Hot Springs offers a "clothing optional hot springs and camping" experience where guests participated but "didn't feel like we had to." One visitor described it as having "great people all around from guests to staff."

What you should know

Reservation timing: Book well ahead. Many cabin sites require advance booking, especially for prime summer dates. At Valley View Hot Springs, "you need to reserve well in advance as the demand is much higher than the capacity." Off-season availability improves at most locations.

Amenity variations: Check specific offerings. Cabin amenities differ significantly between properties. Joyful Journey Hot Springs cabins include "access to the pools" and "an adobe bathroom/shower house with full access" plus "a restaurant cafe in the main lodge." Some properties include meals—at Joyful Journey, "breakfast and dinner are included in your stay."

Weather preparation: Altitude affects temperatures. The high elevation means significant temperature swings. At Monarch Spur RV Park, "high altitude means cool to cold nights" even during summer months. Campers should pack layers regardless of season.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for entertainment options. Families should select cabins with dedicated children's activities. Cutty's Resort has "a lot for kids to do—pool, mini golf, a basketball court, and a game room." One reviewer noted they "had young staff that organized hands on crafts and science experiment classes for all the kids to participate in."

Meal planning: Limited grocery options. Howard has minimal food shopping facilities. Larger grocers are located in Salida, about 30 minutes from most cabin sites. Some campgrounds like Cutty's Resort offer limited food service where "the food they served at the mess hall was fire."

Technology expectations: Limited connectivity. Bighorn Park and other sites near Howard often have minimal cell reception or Wi-Fi. One visitor to Cutty's noted "no cell service so teens not happy about this." Some sites offer Wi-Fi in common areas only.

Tips from RVers

Site size considerations: Limited large spaces. RVers report variable site dimensions at cabin campgrounds. Bighorn Park offers both "pull though and back ins" with some spots reported as "rather small." One camper mentioned they "have an Outlaw toy hauler so we're so lucky to get a back-in spot overlooking the river."

Road conditions: Access considerations. Access roads to some cabin properties remain unpaved. One camper mentioned "road into the campground was dirt and a bit washboard" when describing their experience getting to Cutty's Resort. Winter travel may require 4WD for some properties.

Hookup limitations: Check availability. Not all cabin campgrounds offer full RV hookups. At Joyful Journey, some sites are "dry spots" while others have "electric hookup." Riverside RV Park offers 30-amp service while others provide 50-amp connections.
