Dog-Friendly Campgrounds near Craig, CO for Your Pets

Craig KOA allows pets throughout their clean, well-maintained campground with tent sites, RV spots, and cabins. Additional pet-friendly options near Craig include Yampa River Headquarters Campground, Bears Ears Campground, and Freeman Reservoir Campground, all permitting leashed dogs. The sites at Freeman Reservoir are well separated and screened by trees for good privacy, making them ideal for campers with pets needing space. Campgrounds in the area feature picnic tables, fire pits, and toilets, though amenities vary with some locations offering electric hookups, water, and shower facilities. Most campgrounds require pets to be leashed at all times outside vehicles or camping units. The KOA maintains typical campground spacing with sites situated close together.

Numerous trails and paths surround the Craig area campgrounds, providing opportunities for pet exercise. Yampa River Headquarters Campground offers a 1.1-mile bike/walking trail through trees and near the river, perfect for daily dog walks. However, campers should be prepared for mosquitoes, particularly at riverside locations like Yampa River State Park where they can be extremely aggressive. Freeman Reservoir is particularly scenic during fall color changes and has a short trail circling the water where dogs can exercise. BLM dispersed camping areas like CO 1597 provide more secluded options for pets that need space, though these primitive sites lack facilities and may require high-clearance vehicles to access. Seasonal considerations are important, as some campgrounds like Freeman Reservoir operate only from June to October. Each pet-friendly campground near Craig has specific rules regarding dogs, so check requirements about leashes, breed restrictions, and pet waste disposal before arriving.

    Freeman Reservoir Campground

    A Secret Gem!!

We hit this place coming from the northern Colorado border with Wyoming on a Sunday night. I've grown up and camped in Colorado my whole life, this place was 10/10, and one of my favorite spots ever! With hiking, biking, and fishing, you could spend some time here!

    Loudy-Simpson County Park

    Pleasant surprise on the Yampa

I’m not quite sure what the story is with this park. There are about six primitive sites plus one wheelchair accessible site down at the boat launch area of this expansive county park. There is no signage at all to indicate if the sites are day use or overnight stays allowed? We figured it doesn’t explicitly state ‘no camping’ so we spent a peaceful Wednesday night here and had no company until locals showed up in the morning to use the dog park located right in the area (which is also a wonderful trail along the Yampa). The sunrise over the Yampa was spectacular and we saw many species of birds and several deer crossing the River. All and all this site exceeded our expectations. Do note that there are sparkling clean bathrooms in the playground area of the park, but that area is a good 500 yards away. No restrooms at all at the actual campsite.

    Maybell Park

Good place to park, more expensive than advertised.

This is a pet friendly campground around a square park right on 40. They have electric and non electric sites, but the majority were electric (and cost more). This was advertised $15 - $20 but the prices online were $38.50 for an electric site for one night (granted, it was a Saturday in August). There were not pet fees. There were lots of spaces available when we visited.

There is no office here, you pay for your rental online or on an iPad in the kiosk (if working). There is WiFi at the kiosk, but it does not reach many of the campsites well.

Sites are close together but level. Felt safe and it was quiet at night save for occasional passing cars. No fire pits or individual picnic tables, but there is a shared covered picnic area.

Clean bathrooms. Showers were more of a 2.5/5. Not super clean and water smelled rusty. Water from sink was fine though.

Morning became very busy with travelers stopping to use the public restrooms, which may help you decide where to park.

Yampa River Headquarters Campground — Yampa River State Park

    Nice, clean campground

We spent July 4th holiday at this campground. The site had lots of green grass and some trees. We were close to the boat ramp so it was an easy walk down to the river. We drove out to Steamboat Springs one of the days and had a lot of fun on the river trail. Hayden has minimal services so stop in Craig or Steamboat if you need supplies. Decent cell and 4g reception.

Bears Ears Campground — Elkhead Reservoir State Park

    Not so hidden gem?

Great little campground with picnic tables, fire pits, clean vault toilets & dumpsters. Pretty quite location, you can hear the water here & there which was nice & an occasional airplane would fly by. Campground was very clean, well maintained. Great location! 20 mins from the town of Craig (Walmart, gas stations, restaurants) & about an hour from steamboat springs. The only thing we were kind of missing were some trees.

    Vaughan Lake Campground

    Vaughan Lake

Established campground with basics like a fire ring, picnic table and vault toilets. No water. If you are wanting a few days away from everything and willing to drive on dirt/gravel roads to get here, it is an awesome place to camp. Bring everything you need because there are no quick trips to a store out here. The river that flows into the lake is adjacent to campsite #1 and makes for a great night of sleep. The view waking up to the lake with the snow capped mountains in the background is truly a Colorado experience if that is what you’re looking for.

    Meadows Campground

Solid Walk-In Campground for Easy Resting

I was wandering from Yellowstone/Tetons en route to Colorado Springs when I reach a necessary point for rest. After trying my luck near Steamboat, I glanced through FCFS campgrounds close by and found Meadows. It’s just off the highway, really easy to bypass if you aren’t paying much attention, but it upheld as a quite space to rest. Even driving in at 1am, there were plenty of spaces available.

The grounds includes a bathroom facility and spaces for both tent and RV camping. The grounds is relatively inexpensive for the beautiful space that it is located. Definitely saved me from getting to restless on the ride through.

Guide to Craig

Dispersed camping options near Craig, Colorado include BLM lands and forest service areas that provide more remote alternatives to established campgrounds. The area sits at elevations ranging from 6,200 to 9,000 feet, with summer temperatures typically ranging from 45-85°F. Camping season generally runs from late spring through early fall, with some higher elevation sites like Freeman Reservoir only accessible from June through October.

What to do

Fishing access points: At Freeman Reservoir Campground, multiple fishing spots are available around the small reservoir. "We even got pictures of a couple beavers. The campground itself is decent and I've never seen it crowded," notes Charlie B., who visited during fall color changes.

River exploration: The Yampa River offers multiple access points for water activities. At Juniper Canyon, "The river is shallow and wide and warm enough to swim in... access to the river for fishing was both incredible and makes this an amazing off the beaten path campground," according to Derek S.

Hiking options: Several campgrounds feature short trails suitable for day hikes. "A bike/walking trail of about 1.1 miles through the trees and near the river was very nice, doing several loops," reports Rich D. about the trail at Yampa River Headquarters Campground.

Wildlife viewing: Early mornings and evenings provide opportunities to see deer, beaver, and pronghorn. "We hit this place coming from the northern Colorado border with Wyoming on a Sunday night... with hiking, biking, and fishing, you could spend some time here!" writes Kelsey U. about Freeman Reservoir.

What campers like

Seclusion between sites: Freeman Reservoir Campground offers well-spaced sites with natural screening. "The campsites are well separated, and screened by trees for good privacy. Despite a mostly full campground after dark it was very quiet, no generators, no barking dogs, and no big parties," writes Talia J.

Access to water: Many campers appreciate the proximity to water features. "The beautiful little lake!! Lots of trees and a bunch of wild flowers. It was just a great family place!!" reports Kodi A. about Freeman Reservoir Campground.

Clean facilities: Established campgrounds maintain good sanitation standards. "The campground is beautiful, staff is friendly, you get a covered picnic table. The disappointing thing is the nice bathroom and showers are closed 10pm-6am, just a vault toilet is available during those closed hours," notes Ann about Yampa River Headquarters Campground.

Weather conditions: Late summer through early fall offers pleasant temperatures. "Beautiful spot. Almost at 9,000 ft. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. Most of them are slightly treed... The fall colors are just starting to show," reports David M. about Freeman Reservoir Campground.

What you should know

Road conditions: Several dispersed camping areas require careful driving. At BLM CO 1597, "the road going in starts out fine but quickly turns slightly treacherous with large dips on the sharp curves but manageable even in the 2wd beetle!! there were about 5 designated campsites spaced out along the road," according to mary J.

Insect activity: Prepare for mosquitoes, especially near water. "They have a path you can walk or bike that is a little over a mile but be ready the mosquitos are fierce. There are also small black bugs that seem to out also," warns Ann about Yampa River Headquarters Campground.

Limited shade: Some campgrounds have minimal tree coverage. "There was zero tree coverage so we woke up with the sun and were boiling by 9 and it was time to go!" reports mary J. about BLM CO 1597.

Seasonal accessibility: Higher elevation sites have shorter seasons. "Road is impassable in winter," notes Charlie B. about Freeman Reservoir Campground, which typically operates from June through October.

Tips for camping with families

Pet management: Dog friendly campgrounds near Craig include several options with specific amenities. "Great little campground with picnic tables, fire pits, clean vault toilets & dumpsters. Pretty quite location, you can hear the water here & there which was nice," mentions Heather L. about Bears Ears Campground.

Bathroom facilities: Family campsites with better facilities make longer stays more comfortable. "Clean facilities: flush toilets, showers (coin operated), washing and drying machines," lists Kasia S. at Yampa River Headquarters Campground, though noting there's "very few trees" and "no privacy at all."

Activity options: Look for campgrounds with built-in entertainment. At Steamboat Springs KOA, "There is a small pool, updated miniature golf course, trike rentals and the Yampa running through the campground," according to Tanner S., making it suitable for families with various interests.

Weather preparation: Family camping requires planning for temperature changes. "We got to the campground after closing time for the park headquarters and visitors center and so just had to drive the many loops to find a spot," notes Talia J., suggesting arriving during daylight hours for easier setup.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: RV sites with power are available at several campgrounds. At Craig KOA, "This is a nice and typical KOA. The sites were pretty close together which is the norm for a KOA. The location was great for us. Everything was clean," reports Cindy C.

Site spacing considerations: Some RV parks have limited separation between sites. "This is a nice quiet KOA that is reasonably priced. All facilities are clean, the staff are friendly and it's close enough to the city of Craig and a few attractions," notes Greg D. about Craig KOA.

Campground layout: Understanding the layout helps when selecting sites. "A nice place. Trees but shameless in the actual sites. Clean all around well cared for," writes Michael P. about Yampa River Headquarters Campground, suggesting it's well-maintained despite limited privacy.
