Best RV Parks & Resorts near Capulin, CO

Several RV parks near Capulin serve travelers exploring southern Colorado's natural attractions. Cool Sunshine RV Park in Alamosa provides full hookup sites with 50-amp service, water connections and sewer hookups on level gravel surfaces. "This is a very clean spot with multiple amenities. They even have an exercise room, grill area, dog area, nice covered patio areas for chillin'," noted one visitor. Sand Dunes Recreation in Hooper accommodates both big rigs and standard motorhomes with full hookup capability and is open seasonally. Woods & River RV Park in Del Norte features 50-amp electrical service, fire rings, and sites situated along the Rio Grande with shade from large cottonwood trees. Sites at these parks typically include picnic tables and trash service.

During summer and fall, many parks fill quickly, requiring advance reservations, especially in peak tourist seasons. Most RV parks in the region maintain sanitary dump stations, though Canon Bonito RV & Fisherman's Club only operates from May to mid-October. Cell service varies considerably throughout the mountainous terrain, with stronger connections reported at Cool Sunshine RV Park. Pet policies are generally accommodating, though specific restrictions may apply at individual sites. Between frequent train noise at Alamosa facilities and the peaceful riverside settings at Woods & River, travelers can select locations matching their preference for either convenient town access or natural settings. Winter travelers should note that several parks close seasonally, with only a few operating year-round.

    Pagosa Riverside Campground

    Family campground

We lucked on a pull through spot without reservations, very friendly office crew drove us to the spot. Full hookups & Wi-Fi. Right on the river with benches spread out to enjoy the scenery. Small little pond people were fishing not many catching. The sites are pretty close together but do come with picnic table and fire ring. Very close to town fun little place

    Questa Lodge & RV Resort

RV park with a campground feel

Nice park nestled at the foot of the mountains and on the banks of the Red River. Nicely landscaped with two ponds and a river walk. Location is great for visiting Rio Grande del Norte NM and the Wild Rivers Recreation Area. Just north of Taos too. Nicely shaded, level sites with full hookups. Nice picnic table and grill. Might be a little tight for big rigs, but my little Casita was quite happy. Very friendly folks in the office. Clean laundry and restroom. My site backed up to the river and the sound of the rushing water was the perfect lullaby.

The Last Resort RV Park & Campground

    Very peaceful, beautiful location

The Last Resort RV park  is hidden into a very peaceful valley. They are open year round and have River side spots for those under 26 feet long and some very large pull through spots with lots of space. No Verizon cell service and very poor Wifi.  If you truly enjoy your peace and quiet  this is the spot for you. Staff is very friendly.

    West Fork Dispersed

    Amazing dispersed camping

After crossing the bridge there are 4 sites, 2 on the left 2 on the right. Left 2 sites are blocked by fallen trees but can be crawled over with the right rig. First campsite on the right is the best one. Several fire pits, river access and wide area for big rigs. Enjoy!

    Del Norte City Park

    Only One Night Stay Allowed

This is an interesting spot to stay the night. It is right on the river and there are 1-5 sites with a playground, bathrooms, bbq pit, and a dump station. I'm not sure who takes care of this park but they have done a great job!

It is not pet friendly so keep them on a leash and walk them off property.

It is a free site but you can only stay 1 night max. It is not for tents but it will fit RV's and campervans just fine. Maximum RV length is 35 feet.

The best thing about this site is that it is within walking distance of Three Barrel Brewing Company! Excellent beer and a legit pizza oven!

Canon Bonito RV & Fisherman's Club

    Love the location.

This is my type of park. Located in a beautiful valley giving away to peaceful nights. At an altitude of 8100 feet I enjoyed pleasant days 76° and cool night 56°. Pet friendly park with WiFi and good Verizon cell service. Restrooms are still closed due to Covid 19. Took a day trip to Great Sand Dunes. Pass Port American card got me 50% off one night.

    Alamosa KOA

    Friendly, Beautiful KOA in Alamosa

The Alamosa KOA was chosen by our family because we like to have the option for swimming at the end of a hard day of play in the National Parks. We made our reservation for our site in March, a mere three months before our mid-week, June 7 arrival.

This KOA has a nice sized heated, outdoor pool with reasonable hours, closing around 8:00 PM. The pool temperature was warm enough for even the adults to slip right into it. There is also a fantastic playground with updated equipment, including an elevated tunnel system that ends with safety slides. When you have a small child who loves to play, especially a special needs child, this is a big deal! Other amenities include showers and laundry facilities (we did not use either but they looked nice). Wi-Fi is advertised, and the signal is available, but was not even fast or reliable enough to load photos from Instagram or Twitter. Streaming would be out of the question, but it would probably suffice for checking email.

One of the more unique benefits offered at this KOA include on-site Hunt Brothers Pizza and breadsticks. Not only can you get hot, fresh pizza here, made to order, but they will deliver it to your site! In addition, they deliver wood and ice. This site also offers a weekend pancake breakfast (seasonal).

The RV sites were leveled very well, and they have both 30-amp and 50-amp sites available. There are small shade trees scattered throughout the camping area, but they are still quite young and small. I read some previous reviews that felt the sites were too close together. Although there was little privacy, we have certainly had less room between sites than we had in Alamosa. Perhaps with slide-outs it might be more compact, but our little Starcraft fit in just fine. In addition to RV sites, there are tent sites and camping cabins available.

Our take-away from Alamosa KOA: The view from the campsite and the kindness and helpfulness of the hosts, the Martin family, make this a return-trip campground for sure! Any questions for us about this site? Leave them in the comments below!

Guide to Capulin

Recreational vehicle accommodations near Capulin, Colorado provide convenient access to southern Colorado's mountain wilderness. The area sits at approximately 7,800 feet elevation with semi-arid climate conditions that create cool nights even during summer months. Weather patterns can change rapidly in this high-elevation region, with afternoon thunderstorms common from July through September.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The Rio Grande offers trout fishing at Woods & River RV Park, where campsites are situated along a bend in the river. "The fishing was awesome. The Rio Grande flows by and so do the trout. When we were there, fishing was free every 1st weekend of the month," noted one visitor to this Del Norte camping area.

Stargazing: Clear mountain skies create optimal conditions for night sky viewing. At The Last Resort RV Park & Campground, campers can enjoy unobstructed views after dark. "Watch a skyful of stars and then fall asleep to the sound of the river," reports one tent camper who appreciated the natural setting.

Hot springs soaking: Sand Dunes Recreation in Hooper features natural thermal pools of varying temperatures. "The pools are artesian hot springs. The pools are extremely kid friendly, and there are greenhouses with 21+ soaking and bar," explains a repeat visitor. The adult-only area called "The Green Room" contains multiple temperature-level hot tubs, a wading pool, and a sauna.

What campers like

Wildlife viewing: Many campsites offer opportunities to observe local wildlife. According to one long-term visitor at Woods & River RV Park, "Lots of wild life and stars are amazing at night." Deer are commonly spotted in early evening hours.

River access: Properties along waterways receive consistent praise for their natural sound buffer and recreational value. "The river sites are huge. The bathrooms and laundry room are renovated (and they do not run out of hot water)," notes a guest at Sky Mountain Resort RV Park near Chama. The flowing water creates natural white noise that masks road sounds.

Recreation facilities: On-site amenities enhance stay experiences beyond typical campground offerings. At Sand Dunes Recreation, "There is also a basketball court, coin operated showers and laundry, water hook ups, and electric hookups," according to a reviewer. Some properties include playgrounds, sport courts, and communal gathering areas.

What you should know

Train noise: Railroad tracks near several Alamosa properties create periodic disruptions. One camper at Cool Sunshine RV Park noted, "Nice people, nice place, very clean. Only issues are the active train tracks right next to the park and the narrow spaces." Five trains passing as late as 10pm were reported by another visitor.

Seasonal operations: Many campgrounds in the region have limited operating seasons. Canon Bonito RV & Fisherman's Club operates only from May to mid-October, while Sky Mountain Resort RV Park runs from May 15 to October 15.

Bathroom availability: Facility access varies significantly between properties. One camper at South Fork Lodge & RV Park reported, "This park has no bathrooms, no laundry, no fire pits… Nothing but a picnic table." Always verify amenities before booking, especially if traveling without self-contained systems.

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation: Several properties offer water features popular with children. At The Last Resort RV Park & Campground, visitors appreciate the riverside setting: "There is a picnic shelter where we sat out a rainstorm, a very nice bathhouse for showering and washing dishes, as well as a comfortable indoor sitting area and another outdoor area with chairs and a fire pit."

Animal encounters: Properties with farm animals provide entertainment for younger campers. "There are often horses (and a goat) on the property and plenty of space to take a nice walk. This year, we saw a lot of Canada geese and there are also chickens and ducks," reports a repeat visitor to The Last Resort RV Park & Campground.

Play structures: Dedicated recreational areas keep children engaged. "Fun kids area with playground and treehouse with zip line," notes a family staying at Woods & River RV Park, which features multiple play options near the river.

Tips from RVers

Site spacing: Proximity to neighbors varies significantly between properties. At Rio Chama RV Park, one visitor noted, "I think the spots are too close together," while at South Fork Lodge & RV Park, a camper appreciated that "You're spaced out so you're not on top of your neighbors."

Levelness: Terrain challenges exist at some RV sites near Capulin. Colorado. "Sites weren't level, and very loud early mornings with all of the ATV activity," reports one visitor at South Fork Lodge & RV Park. Bringing leveling blocks is recommended for most properties in the mountainous region.

Water temperature variations: Unusual water system features appear at some properties. At The Last Resort RV Park & Campground, a visitor observed, "If you have an rv and hook up to the water, it is fed from the hot springs so the water is always very warm." This eliminates the need for water heater use but may affect cold water availability.
