Off-highway vehicle enthusiasts will find Gunnison National Forest Pitkin Campground operates as a first-come, first-served facility from May through September. The Forest Service campground sits within walking distance of Pitkin and accommodates big rigs despite rough access roads. Sites are level and manicured according to recent visitors.
The campground requires cash or check payments at $24 per night, with no pet policy in effect. Cell phone service is unavailable unless campers have satellite connectivity. A nearby stream runs through the area, and the facility sees regular OHV use throughout the season, making it a practical base for campgrounds near Pitkin exploration.
Description
The area surrounding Pitkin Campground is popular for four-wheel driving in the Summer and Fall months. Many 4-wheel drive, high-clearance roads exist in this mountainous region. The area north and east of Pitkin was part of the mineral belt that extends into Leadville. Many of the 4-wheel drive roads were created by miners over 100 years ago. Pitkin campground is also used as a winter trailhead for snowmobilers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. There are 22 campsites.
