Most campgrounds in the Crescent Mills area operate seasonally, typically from May through September or early October, with some higher elevation sites not opening until June due to snowpack. Fire restrictions are common during late summer and fall, particularly during drought years. Road conditions vary significantly, with some campgrounds accessible via paved roads while others require travel on gravel forest service roads. Cell service is limited or non-existent at most campgrounds, particularly those deeper in Plumas National Forest. Visitors should check current conditions with the Plumas National Forest ranger district before traveling, as seasonal closures and fire restrictions can change rapidly.

Taylorsville County Park provides amenities including electric hookups, showers, and a market, making it suitable for RVs and families seeking more conveniences. For those seeking a more remote experience, the surrounding national forest offers primitive camping with fewer amenities but more seclusion. Campers report that sites near Lake Almanor can fill quickly during summer weekends and holidays, especially during fishing season. Weather conditions can change rapidly in this mountain region, with summer days often hot but nights remaining cool even during peak season, requiring appropriate gear for temperature fluctuations.

      Christie Hill Basecamp

Great spot close to Lassen South Entrance

The forest road is super accessible with a bunch of different spots to choose from as you traverse down the road. There are some fire rings in some of the spots. No water, bathroom, etc. Road is fairly well maintained but drive with caution if no 4WD or AWD and low clearance. Only 3.5 miles from the entrance so it’s a perfect place to stay before or after going through Lassen NP.

      Almanor

For the North Campground, what a shame and serious safety issues for all.

Simply put, I am embarrassed to say that this one was opened with major safety issues. I was even told by a person at the Almanor Ranger Office in Chester that they were forced to open this campground.
      Safety issues:
-Trees were fell and slash was left behind without cleanup by contractor.
-Boulders were moved and above mentioned slash was covering the holes left by the moved boulders creating major safety trip/fall hazards. These hazards could cause twisted and/or broken legs and feet and more.
-Fire Hazard: Above mentioned slash was left behind everywhere for it to dry out an become a major fire hazard. Yes, the camp site around the table and fire ring was cleared, but only by about 10-15 feet.
-Limited walking areas: As the slash was left behind, areas for walking or the kids playing was like walking in a minefield.  Even on the paved drive path, there is holes and to move out of the way for trucks/campers requires movement onto the above ,mentioned slash that was not cleaned up.

I grew up in this area and after being gone in the military for over 30 years, I came home.  This poor campground is a disgrace and I am deeply saddened by the condition the USFS and it's contractor left it in. If I was in charge, I would not have let it open for public use due to the safety issues.

      What a shame.

      Lone Rock Campground

Beautiful lake and area but disappointing female host

Camped here a few days ago and the campground host named Yvonne smelling like liquor came into our camp telling us we had to pay $5 extra for a vehicle parking when we already paid , wouldn’t check that we had paid but was persistent we paid her. The second night we were there my husband went to ask her to shut her generator off at 11:30 at night because it was loud and keeping us up and she told him no she’s not shutting it off because it keeps the bears away. I think whoever runs these campgrounds needs to really look into who they are hiring because this was such a disappointment. We brought these issues to the campground manager there and he apologized to us for her behavior.

31N17N - North Manzanita Dispersed Camping

      Amazingly secluded

We bypassed the sites that were immediately to the right off FR17 (Mineral Rd) to see if there were others up the road. There is one cute site right near the creek but directly on the road so a lot of dust if you stayed there. We continued past 20W and came around the corner to an amazing multi site area! Easily could have had 3 or 4 rigs in here and indeed, there were 4 campfire rings. And no one there! We had it all to ourselves (Tue-Wed-Thu) and were able to easily get to Manzanita Lake and into Lassen. Don't let the piles of logging debris fool you - just go past it!

      Snag Lake Campground

      Definitely could be worse..

Right off the road, rough to get into, in a flight path, lake is muck and stumps. But sites are free, first come first serve, water adjacent, sites spread out.

      American Eagle RV Park

      Nice place beautiful view

This is a campground that has great potential and Jason the manager is working hard to get it that way.

Full hook up site with great view. Looks like there are 2 nice playgrounds, a softball field, horse shoes and hiking trails, much more that I didn't get the chance to check out.

Jason was a great help to me, I'm on a trip back to Michigan and my last stop a portion of the bottom cover/liner fell off. (the dealer had cut a large square out to work on it.) Jason got it back on better than the dealer would have, tied up some wires that were hanging. He did a great job for a reasonable price. Thanks Jason

I highly recommend this campground; just keep in mind it is a work in restoring progress.

Also even though it was in the 90's I had a great, shaded spot and could sit outside the breeze made it comfortable.

      Spanish Creek Campground

      Hot and noisy

It’s no one’s fault that at 3000 ft elevation it’s really hot here in July but that made the dry dusty conditions less pleasant. Lots of loud trains before dawn and through early morning. At site 6 nearer the road, lots of morning traffic sounds, not the best to wake to. In July 2026 the water system was positive for bacteria, signs said not dangerous but they warn you of risks anyway (?). Restrooms out of tp. I notice upon leaving, after dodging yellow jackets at meal time, a half full wasp trap hanging in my site. I’d avoid site 6.

Summit Lake North — Lassen Volcanic National Park

Excellent place to visit Lassen NP!

We’ve camped here every year for the past five years. This was the our first trip with our new to us travel trailer. We book six months in advance and always get sites B2 and B3. These sites have a beautiful view of the lake. We get up early and set up our blanket and chairs in our lake spot. The lake is big enough to paddle board and kayak but small enough where you can keep an eye on your kids the entire time.

Zero hook ups whatsoever, but you can use the dump station for free at Manzanita lake on your way up to fill your freshwater and then dump on your way out. Summit Lake North has flush toilets and sinks, I believe Summit Lake South Campground only has vault toilets.

Park Rangers patrol through every once in a while and the bathrooms are cleaned and stocked daily.

There is no cell service but if you drive about five minutes up the hill, you can get some service. It is a short drive to Kings Creek Falls and about a 15 minute drive to bumpass hell.

      Highly recommended.

    Guide to Crescent Mills

The camping sites near Crescent Mills, California sit at the edge of Plumas National Forest in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains, with elevations ranging from 3,500 to 5,000 feet. Summer daytime temperatures typically reach 80-95°F with nighttime lows dropping to 45-55°F, creating significant temperature swings that require proper layering. Most campgrounds in this region open in late May and close by mid-October due to seasonal snowfall.

    What to do

Swimming in natural waters: Spanish Creek Campground provides access to a swimming hole with clean, inviting water. "The water is clean and inviting, the beach is wide and covered with shake rocks, and the views up the sides of the steep banks are beautiful," notes Erika B. The campground is located along Highway 70 near Quincy.

Fishing opportunities: Ponderosa Flat Campground on Butt Valley Reservoir offers excellent fishing conditions. Matt D. shares, "Part of Butt Valley Reservoir, this is the upper (and nicer) campground on the lake. The campsites are spacious and the lake has great fishing. One of our favorite spots and it's very easy to get to."

Boating and water sports: Rocky Point Campground - Lake Almanor provides access to one of the region's largest lakes. "This is a campground that is right on Lake Almanor. It's fun to be able to camp right next to the lake, the views are amazing!" says Sarah S. The campground operates from May through October.

    What campers like

Spacious campsites: Lake Cove Resort & Marina offers various site options with good separation. According to Jacquelynn W., "Lake cove is always a good choice. Clean bathrooms and laundry facility on site. There are tent sites, even sites with and without hookups, cabins, and a trailer to rent."

Clean facilities: Many campers appreciate the well-maintained bathrooms at Spanish Creek Campground. Lex N. comments, "Drinkable water and very clean and well kept pit toilets. Manny, the camp host, is great, he keeps a great area and can provide insight on hiking spots and other areas to visit around the area."

Wildlife viewing: Taylorsville County Park provides opportunities to see deer up close. Kurt C. notes about the nearby Cool Springs Campground, "Easy to access and nice setting. Camp host was friendly. Deer will come up to your campsite looking for snacks so a good photo opportunity."

    What you should know

Train noise considerations: Some campgrounds in canyons experience train noise. Jessica F. reports about Spanish Creek: "The trains were definitely loud in the night, because the rails cling to the sides of the canyon, and the wheels scrape against the rails on the curves. I would stay here a couple nights again, because the creek is beautiful, and the valley seems remote."

Insect activity: Bugs can be prevalent depending on the season. At Spanish Creek Campground, one camper mentioned, "We battled meat bees and mosquitos a bit. The camp hosts are great people; they're kind and vigilant."

Water levels fluctuate: PG&E Lassen National Forest Rocky Point Campground and other lake campgrounds experience varying water levels. "There was plenty of water in the Reservoir and it could be okay for a boat but you have to look out for all the snags in the water, and there are a lot of them," warns Patricia N. about nearby Ponderosa Flat.

    Tips for camping with families

Look for recreational amenities: Some camping areas offer more than just campsites. Jacquelynn W. notes about Lake Cove Resort, "They also have a volleyball court, horse shoes, and arcade available."

Consider paved campgrounds: Ponderosa Flat Campground offers paved areas good for children's activities. "Pave roads are great for kids for bike riding, scooters and skateboards," mentions Matt D.

Swimming spot safety: When camping with kids at Spanish Creek Campground, the swimming area provides gentle water. According to one camper, "The swimming hole. The water is clean and inviting, the beach is wide and covered with shake rocks."

    Tips from RVers

Size restrictions: Many campsites near Crescent Mills have limitations for larger rigs. About Ponderosa Flat Campground, Patricia N. advises, "Campground is quiet but tight to get a large trailer in, ours is 26 feet and it was tight. The spaces in the closed portion of the campground were a bit more spacious."

Unlevel sites: Be prepared for some campground terrain challenges. At Rocky Point Campground, Alex notes, "It's packed pretty tight and we were on a slope but booked it again this year."

Limited hookup options: Dan M. reports about Rocky Point, "Priced at 30$ for dry camping only was pricy. Only vault toilets, but clean. Dump station but not included in camping fee. Flat spaces, all paved. Smaller campground run by PG&E."
