TV Tower Road Dispersed Camping features multiple camping spots along a narrow ridge with panoramic views of Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, and the Pacific Ocean. This free pet-friendly site allows dogs to explore the natural terrain without formal restrictions, though keeping pets leashed is recommended due to steep drop-offs along the ridge. The road up the mountain is narrow, winding, and rough in places, requiring careful navigation and preferably a vehicle with decent clearance. No amenities are provided—no toilets, water, or waste facilities—so campers with pets must pack in supplies and pack out waste. The wind at night can be intense, with gusts strong enough to shake vehicles and make tent camping challenging.

Dispersed sites are spread along several pullouts on the ridge, providing ample space between campers when not busy. The road serves as a hiking trail with dogs welcome, offering an excellent opportunity for sunset walks with panoramic vistas. Reviewers note flies can be problematic during summer months, so bringing bug spray is advisable when camping with pets. While the site can accommodate small to medium RVs, the road is not suitable for large rigs or trailers. Santa Margarita KOA, located nearby, offers an alternative with full hookups, cabin accommodations, and maintained pet areas for those seeking more amenities. For wildlife safety, keep dogs under control as the ridge area may have coyotes and other wild animals.

      Santa Margarita KOA

      Better than expected

My wife, son and I stayed here May 11-13 in our class C. We even brought our two dogs. A quick get away during the lock down. This was one of the few campgrounds we found that were taking reservations. They only took full hookup sites because bathrooms, showers and laundry are closed. The playground was open. Fun bounce pad. There is frisbee golf and horse shoes. They even have an Emu that is friendly and your kids can pet. The place is very clean and the staff is friendly. The campground was pretty empty except for a very few brave campers and the staff. It is a short walk down to Lake Santa Margarita. We stayed in site 28. AT&T cell service was zero to very poor at our site. WiFi was poor and slow. They advertised good WiFi in our spot but it just wasn’t so. A bit pricey but we just wanted to get out of the house. We would stay here again.

      Avila-Pismo Beach KOA

      Good base camp

We stopped here for a few nights so we could hook up to shore power for a bit, do laundry, dump etc. The campground itself is small and old so the sites can be a little small for the larger rigs. Bathrooms and showers were clean. People who run it were extremely accommodating - it was difficult for us to access the dump hookup in our first assigned site (we have a macerater with a very short hose) so they moved us to a better site. Easy walking/biking access to Avila beach (4.8miles round trip), and quick drive from Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo. They allow leashes pets and have a small dog park and pet “walk,” and while these are great, I also like to walk my dog around the whole campground when we can’t take her walks elsewhere, and this campground is very limiting. They have several signs up where dogs aren’t allowed.

Overall, this is a great location if you want access to the beach and nearby towns with nice basic amenities.

      El Chorro Regional Park

Beautiful camping area with tons of amenities

Amazing park, the staff were extremely friendly and the grounds were very clean. Bathrooms were very clean snd always stocked. Showers are a dollar, but you get a lot longer than you would expect.

They do charge extra for dogs, $3.50/day/dog, but was well worth it as they have beautiful large dog parks a mile behind the campsite.

There is also a large children's park, sports fields, and a botanical garden (which does cost extra).

Morrow bay beaches are 10-15 minutes away. Sylvester's burgers is also only 15 minutes away, which is well worth the drive.

18 Primitive that can easily fit trailers/RVs and they have full hookup sites as well.

Only downside is you are right next to highway 1, so it's a little noisy, but not horrible.

      Doordash will also deliver here!

Sun Outdoors Paso Robles RV Resort

Very clean and lots of amenities!

We camped at Cava Robles about 6 months after it opened.  We saw the two pools which were very nice.  Didn't use them because it was too cold (we were there in February).  They also have at least two dog parks and took our high energy dog there to run.  They also have a great playground for the kids.  There is also a little hiking/walking trail around the campground.

      El Chorro Regional Park

      Nice two night stay

I’m a newbie camper but really enjoyed this campground. Stayed in Chumash. Sites were big enough and private enough. Nice dog park. Nice couple of hikes in the park. Very quiet. Would definitely stay again.

      Nice no-frills, out-in-nature camping

If anyone needs a good place to stay near Morro Bay (Central CA coast), El Chorro Regional Park has 43 reasonably priced FHU back-in sites. Nothing fancy - out in nature, the way we like it, plus $1 showers, attentive rangers, and on-site camp hosts. Extremely convenient to both Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. Botanical Garden, dog park, shooting range and golf course all at/near the park.

    Guide to Santa Margarita

TV Tower Road Dispersed Camping sits on a ridge at approximately 2,300 feet elevation between Santa Margarita and Morro Bay. The dry, chaparral landscape offers unobstructed views in multiple directions with temperature shifts of 10-15 degrees cooler than the valley floor below. Wind conditions intensify at night, particularly during seasonal weather patterns from November through March when gusts can reach 25+ mph.

    What to do

Mountain biking trails: 7+ miles of trails accessible from the parking area at the base of TV Tower Road with varying difficulty levels. "There's a mountain bike staging area and the best spots are a little past the TV tower itself," notes one camper about the Other Pullout on TV Tower Road - Dispersed Site.

Stargazing: Minimal light pollution at higher elevations provides excellent night sky viewing when clouds aren't present. "Nightsky was amazing! I saw a shooting star and many satellites," reports Sebastian D. at TV Tower Road Dispersed Camping.

Coastal daytrips: 20-minute drive to Morro Bay with easy beach access for dog walking. "There's a kayaking company within walking distance. There's also a natural history museum across the street," writes Jessica P. about Morro Bay State Park Campground.

    What campers like

Sunrise views: Early morning visibility extends to the coastline on clear days. "I woke first thing in the morning and the view to the west is stunning, a sea of clouds and islands of distant mountain peaks all the way to the coast," explains Kyle K. at TV Tower Road.

Wildlife spotting: Dawn and dusk activity includes deer, birds, and smaller mammals. At Cerro Alto Campground, "We fell asleep to the sound of a resident Pygmy Owl hooting and woke up to Acorn Woodpeckers, Toweys, Robins, Steller Jays, and Warblers singing," shares Chanel C.

Weather variations: Cooler temperatures than surrounding areas during summer months. "Nice and green during the spring. Plenty of bathroom everywhere. Very big camp ground," comments Billy W. about Lopez Lake Recreation Area.

    What you should know

Road conditions: Last third unpaved with challenging sections that worsen after rain. "The road was a bit sketchy, any 4WD would be fine I think. I took my mini van and camped at a turn out along the road because I was a bit hesitant," reports Caitlyn R. about TV Tower Road.

Cell reception: Variable coverage depending on exact location and carrier. "No cell reception at campgrounds (0 bars with AT&T)," notes a reviewer at Cerro Alto Campground.

Dog-specific hazards: Steep terrain and wildlife require extra vigilance with pets. "Keep dogs under control as there is poison oak EVERYWHERE so do not go wandering off into the brush," warns a Cerro Alto camper.

Insect preparation: Seasonal populations increase during warmer months. "Bring bug spray and citronella or thermacills. They're out and about and it's not fun if you're not prepared," advises Barbara M. at Oceano Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Weather preparation: Pack layers for temperature fluctuations throughout the day and night. "It got cold at night but nothing unbearable, lovely sunrise too! I'd recommend bringing a warm sleeping bag," suggests Caitlyn R. about TV Tower Road.

Alternative dog friendly campgrounds near Santa Margarita with more amenities for families. "Oceano CA. Wooded nice spaces with 20 amp electric and water," notes Nancy L. about Oceano Campground, adding it has "hot water and flush toilets. Showers are huge."

Educational opportunities: Junior Ranger programs at several state parks within 30 minutes. At El Chorro Regional Park, "Located near a park, garden, and golf course. It is a short drive to San Luis Obispo or Morro Bay where you can hike, shop, relax on the beach," shares Hannah O.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Smaller rigs only under 24 feet recommended for TV Tower. "Wasn't sure I was going to make it even with my Subaru Forester. It's absolutely gorgeous up here! Can't set up my bathroom and have a lot of vertigo though," mentions Chastity R.

Power options: Generator restrictions at most area campgrounds. "Great spot, dry camping, high clearance recommended, but the views are worth it," notes a camper at TV Tower Road.

Established RV alternatives: Full hookups available at several dog-friendly campgrounds near Santa Margarita within 30 minutes. "El Chorro Regional Park is clean with good toilets and has incredible views," writes Freya H., noting it's "very clean with good toilets and has incredible views."
