Bertrand's High Desert Mobile Home & RV Park

Good Place to Stop Over for a Night

Came here after "visiting" the other so called RV park in this area. This is a nice place and we were greeted by the friendly maintenance guy as soon as we pulled in.

For overnighters there is a separate area from the long term residents with level pull through sites and full hook ups (20, 30 and 50amp) for $30/night.  One of us felt that being secluded away from the main park gave the overnighters area a spooky lonely vibe at night (the other of us didn't feel that way and felt fine).

There is also a self pay drop box (if you need to pay with credit card or want a receipt pay at the office) right outside the fenced overnighter area which also has an easily accessed dump station and potable water for $10 fee if you just need to dump and fill.

The friendly maintenance guy came around to make sure we had everything we needed after we set up. This is right off of Hwy 178 so there is road noise but it quieted down at night. The area is clean and there are dumpsters available as well as a laundry room which is inside the residential area. Laundry was $1.75/wash and $1 for dryer. This park is a good place to stay the night or for a chore day while traveling through.

Good cell service with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, unsure if park has WiFi available.

There's also an RV parts store next door which we did not check out.

Overall a nice clean place, nothing fancy or beautiful but a good place to clean up before heading back into boondocking.

    Walker Pass Campground

    Small and Quiet

Along Hwy 178 towards Ridgecrest you'll find this campground that is small but quiet and clean. It is not for big rigs or RVs.

There are 2 sites with fire pits and covered picnic tables that could fit a large van at most. There is one other spot that is level but has no fire pit or covered table. Further back are several scattered picnic tables and tent spots. There are also 2 unisex ADA accessible pit toilet bathrooms which were quite filthy.

This is a stop along the Pacific Crest Trail. The scenery is an amazing mix of Joshua Trees, pines, chaparral, mountains and large rocks, some snow on the peaks facing north. It is close to the highway so there is some road noise and people stopping to use the bathroom. The road in is paved and narrow and potholed but passable.

There was no cell service with AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile.

There is a donation based drop box for camping fee so pay what you want or what you can afford.

Fires and charcoal grills are not allowed per sign at info board, camp stoves are ok.

    Amazing Time

First time to the Kern River. Loved it. We were there August 1-6. The River was a little low but it was perfect for us with our 5 year old son. We were able to float down the river in our inner tubes safely. We were told May to June the river is very high in this area. We also fished in the river. Our camp site was great. We stayed in site 81 in our class C RV. Corner site on a creek that ran through the campground. The creek was great to sit in to escape the heat and float down. Lots of kids and dog friendly. The WIFI was good to stream TV and ATT cell service was good too. The sites had power, water and cable TV hook up. There is a dump station in the campground. They clean and rake all camp sites after each use and they enforce the 10:00pm quiet time. It is a short walk/ride to Kern River Brewery. Or it is about a hour drive to Trail of 100 Giants Sequoia Trees. Can’t wait to stay here again.

    Desert Empire Fair RV Park

    Great for a reset stop.

We are full time RVers and stayed here 1 night after boondocking a week and heading to our next boondocking destination. This is a perfect stop to dump, fill water, do laundry and just do an overall reset of our RV. I was able to deep clean and get rid of trash. The only thing they didn't have was propane and gas but they had everything else we needed.

Booking & Space: Was easy online. $35 for pull through site for capacity up to 42'. Sites are close together but still far enough to have all slide outs out and room to walk between.

Amenities: Big trash and recycling bins were a bonus. We did 9 loads of laundry, can only load them half way and the washing drum is a little small. 3 washers, 3 dryers. All of the units used the Payrange app except 1 dryer is quarters only. The dryer drums are pretty large so we were able to just split the 3rd load between the 2 dryers that use the Payrange app. It was easy to download the app, add funds, scan the barcode of the machine, set the settings on the machine and start. The washers recommend not to use powder detergent and half the amount of liquid detergent. No coin machine for breaking down change. Also no laundry supply stuff for purchase. Overall our stuff cleaned and dried without problems. The door does get stuck and seems locked after entering the code correctly.

Check-in was easy. Just pull into our site and hook up. Check in is after 2 PM and checkout before 2 PM.

Hookups: Water pressure was good. Electrical has a meter but there's no additional charge for it. Black/Grey water dump and water spigot at each site.

Area was very quiet. No road noise and campers were also quiet. It is very well lit all night and cameras are everywhere.

Bathrooms were clean and well stocked. 3 stalls in the women's and the 3 showers for additional no charge. Each shower had 3 hooks and a seat. There is no bench or seating outside of the showers.

We will definitely be back. Thank you for a great experience.

    Arabian RV Oasis

A place to stay if you must.

Full hookups, concrete pads, picnic tables. Many full time campers parked with junk around them. The grounds need a ton of cleanup. Not the safest feeling being in this park.

    Frandy Park Campground

    Easy access to Rafting Co.

Located in Kernville - has a small store, showers, dispersed chemical toilets. Premium sites by the River are nice with plenty of shade from cottonwood trees. Commercial campground conveniently affiliated with rafting company on site. Friendly staff. Close to brewery, gas station, groceries in town. Good place for first timers to get to know the area.

Ricardo Campground — Red Rock Canyon State Park

    Gorgeous and Clean

The views from this campground are absolute stellar. The sites and pit toilets are clean and plenty of spaces were available. It was all first come, first served and self-pay when we arrived. Drive the loop and find your spot, then return the payment in the envelope provided to the pay station. I’m sure it’s a busy place on the weekends. It’s in an OHV area, so off road vehicle noise is to be expected, but it was minimal. The road in is smooth, sites are easy to access (with a few pull-through sites) and there are a few paved ADA specific sites as well. The sites up by the cliffs are offer the best views but many may be difficult to get level in if you have a motorhome or travel trailer.

    Mountain Valley RV Park

    Quiet & relaxing spot

We needed somewhere to stay for one night as we were finishing up a cross-country drive. We loved how quiet the area was. The grounds are clean and well-kept. Starlink and Verizon service both work great here. Pet-friendly and lots of dogs around while we were here. No complaints!

    Tehachapi Mountain Park

    Quiet and Peaceful

When they say mountain, they mean mountain! The road to the campground is a narrow, twisty, two lane road. Then we got to the campground and it got narrower and steeper. The grades in some parts of the campground were double digit percent grades and the hairpin turns were very sharp. We were towing a 13' travel trailer and did OK, but I wouldn't want anything bigger than that. Just a warning if you have a bigger rig. We Mostly saw car campers and campers on pick up trucks the night we were there.

The campground itself is basic with vault toilets dispersed throughout the campground. Our site had a water hookup, a picnic table, a fire ring. There were showers at the upper end of the campground but we didn't use them. The cost was $18 per night ($16 for seniors). The campground was very quiet the night we were there, but it also looks like it could be the party spot for locals so it might be more noisy on the weekends and during the summer. Overall I recommend it.

Guide to Cantil

RV accommodations near Cantil, California sit at approximately 2,000 feet elevation in the western Mojave Desert region. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F, while winter nights can drop below freezing. Most camping options cluster along Highway 14 and Highway 395 corridors, providing access points to both desert landscapes and nearby mountain recreation areas.

What to do

Glider watching at Mountain Valley: Visitors staying at Mountain Valley RV Park can observe glider aircraft operations at the adjacent airfield. "This was our second stay. Our first being back in 2007 - 2008. We stayed in the exact spot both times on the end of the back row with a great view of the airport. It all has been covered here except for the great lunch the airport restaurant serves and the ability to book a glider flight," notes one camper.

Visit Mojave Air & Space Port: Located next to Spaceport RV Park, this working airfield features experimental aircraft and spaceflight operations. "The coolest thing about this park (besides its nice price) is the Mojave Air & Space Port located immediately next door. Stop by its little park and cute, friendly restaurant where you can watch airplanes take off while having delicious fries or a milkshake," reports a visitor.

Desert hiking at Red Rock Canyon: Ricardo Campground at Red Rock Canyon State Park offers direct access to desert hiking trails with distinctive geological formations. "The desert was alive in April! I got #8 which had a nice view. Not too crowded at 1 pm on a Saturday where I got to choose from a dozen open sites. So much better than the Alabama Hills area which was completely packed," shares a camper.

What campers like

Budget-friendly options: Spaceport RV Park in Mojave offers economical full hookup sites. "What this place lacks in looks more than makes up for in service. Mojave is in the middle of nowhere. But if you find yourself out this way, Spaceport RV Park makes up for it. Full hookup for $20.00/night and VERY helpful park staff!" comments one reviewer.

Level concrete parking: Bertrand's High Desert Mobile Home & RV Park provides well-maintained sites with level concrete pads. "The overnighter spots are separate from the permanent resident area, the spaces are level and very clean. Staff in the office is super friendly and helpful. The office for the park is located at the RV parts building," notes a camper.

Desert scenery: Ricardo Campground offers distinctive rock formation views. "Gorgeous area with nice shady rock overhangs to stay cool during the day. The desert was alive in April! I got #8 which had a nice view," reports one visitor.

What you should know

Limited bathrooms hours: Some facilities restrict bathroom access overnight. "Bathrooms are ok, the issue was that they lock them up at 10:00pm and don't open until 7:30am. It would be so simple to put a code lock on the doors," reports a Mountain Valley RV Park camper.

Separate overnight areas: Several RV parks differentiate between long-term residents and overnight guests. "For overnighters there is a separate area from the long term residents with level pull through sites and full hook ups (20, 30 and 50amp) for $30/night. One of us felt that being secluded away from the main park gave the overnighters area a spooky lonely vibe at night," mentions a Bertrand's visitor.

Pay station variations: Desert Empire Fair RV Park and other locations offer different payment options. "Booking & Space: Was easy online. $35 for pull through site for capacity up to 42'. Sites are close together but still far enough to have all slide outs out and room to walk between," notes a reviewer.

Tips for camping with families

Ricardo Campground activities: Red Rock Canyon State Park provides geological features for children to explore. "Beautiful location; no amenities. Just stayed at this location last weekend. Stunning sites in pocket canyon with soaring rock formations abutting camping area. Primitive bathrooms and no showers or running water. Quiet and simple," shares a visitor.

Plan for extreme temperatures: The Mojave Desert experiences significant temperature fluctuations requiring preparation. "Enough space for our 29" RV, pavement was really ok for desert, water, toilets in the morning full of insects, but that's desert. You also have Wi-Fi at the Visitors Center which we really loved," notes a Ricardo Campground camper.

Consider fairground camping: Antelope Valley Fairgrounds provides basic camping with clean facilities. "Clean showers and bathrooms. Full RV hook-ups. It's absolutely nothing to write home about and really has no personality, trees, or privacy, but if you're in the area and need an anonymous place to stay in your RV that's quiet with full hook-ups, this one does just fine," mentions a reviewer.

Tips from RVers

Overnight stop strategy: Many RV parks near Cantil, California function well as single-night stops between destinations. "We are full time RVers and stayed here 1 night after boondocking a week and heading to our next boondocking destination. This is a perfect stop to dump, fill water, do laundry and just do an overall reset of our RV," reports a Desert Empire Fair RV Park visitor.

Dump station availability: Several campgrounds offer dump stations for non-guests at reasonable rates. "Handy stop for water & dump! $2 bucks for water & $5 bucks for the dump," notes a Spaceport RV Park user. Another visitor at Bertrand's adds: "There is also a dump station with potable water just outside the overnighter area with a self-pay station for just $10. Fantastic deal."

Avoid parking lot-style RV parks: Some RV parks near Cantil are simply parking lots with hookups. "So I tried to stay here last night around 10 pm but I could not figure out how to reserve my spot. When I went online to the website to reserve a spot, it made me choose where I would park my car. It was dark and I couldn't see any markings for places to park," shares an Antelope Valley Fairgrounds visitor.
