Best Campgrounds near Melbourne, AR

The Ozark Mountain region surrounding Melbourne, Arkansas features diverse camping options within a 30-mile radius, from developed sites to more primitive experiences. Blanchard Springs Recreation Area in the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests offers heavily wooded campsites with electric hookups and access to natural swimming holes. Nearby Gunner Pool Recreation Area provides year-round camping with more basic amenities for tent and small RV campers. Several private RV parks in Mountain View, including Whitewater RV Park and Blue Sky RV Park, offer full hookups with varying seasonal availability from March through November.

Roads leading to campgrounds in this part of Arkansas are often narrow and winding, requiring careful navigation especially with larger vehicles. As one camper noted, "Most roads in Arkansas could be considered not narrow, but not exactly wide." Summer brings high humidity and increased insect activity, with mosquitoes and ticks being particularly problematic. Cell service is limited or nonexistent at more remote sites like Blanchard Springs, where a reviewer mentioned "NO cell service in the park." Many campgrounds operate seasonally, with peak visitation from Memorial Day through Labor Day, though some remain open year-round with reduced services during winter months.

Water features heavily influence camping experiences in the region, with several sites offering access to creeks, springs, and swimming holes. The Blanchard Springs area is particularly noted for its cave system and spring-fed waters. According to visitors, "There are lots of cool swimming holes, moving water and falls nearby." Heavily shaded campsites are common throughout the area, providing relief from summer heat but requiring additional lighting during evening hours. Fishing opportunities abound in nearby lakes and streams, with many campgrounds providing dedicated access points. Cultural attractions complement the natural setting, with Mountain View offering folk music performances that draw campers to nearby RV parks, creating what one visitor called a "Folk Music Lovers Dream" with "impromptu jam sessions" on weekends.

    Robinson Point

    Clean, well maintained campground

Camped at site #8 in Oct 10-11, 2025. Our site was on a wooded loop, the first camping section on the left after entering the campground. Good spacing between sites. Our campervan fit nicely on the site; level. Shared water faucet between sites 7 & 8. Our site had 20 and 30 amp power. There was a partial view through the trees of Norfork Lake from the backside of the site. Walked down to the bank of the lake to fish and caught a bass. Sites 5, 7 & 8 are really nice on this loop. Campground is clean and well maintained. AT&T and T-Mobile service. I normally do primitive and dispersed camping, but occasionally use established campgrounds, such as this, for replemishing water and power, and to take a shower. I was very pleased with our campsite and the campground. Did some hiking on the campground trails. The person working the entrance gate wad very nice and helpful. I would stay here again.

    Gunner Pool Recreation Area

    Beautiful National Forest Recreation Area

Camped at site #3 for 3 nights in early October 2025. This site was really good for my camper van; just about level. The site backs up to a beautiful forest. The campground in this recreation area has  27 sites in 3 separate sections. There are some sites at the "pool" which are appropriate for car and tent camping. There is a section down a dirt road along the creek bottom that has a handful of sites; these sites are also good for car and tent camping. I camped in a wooded loop; the sites here can accomodate car, van and tent camping. A few towables may fit in this section. This is a beautiful wooded campground; clean and very well maintained. Most sites are level. Hammock camping is possible in some sites. Most sites have a table, tent pad, lantern pole, metal fire ring and a grill. Some sites are open, some shaded. No hookups. Potable water is located in a central area of the sections; the water was turned on during my visit. There are 4 vault toilets - clean and supplied with tp. Parts of the campground is prone to flash flooding. Very peaceful; the campground wasn't too busy midweek. The campground has access to the beautiful North Sylamore Creek trail. Access to campground on the gravel Gunner Pool Road from Highway 14 was very good during my visit. This forest road goes through the recreation area; it is busier than you would see on typical forest roads. Love this recreation area. One of the best that the Arkansas Ozarks has to offer for outdoor recreation.

    Devils Fork

    ACOE Devils Fork Campground

Nice spot, we stay next to the swimming area. Most of the sites have a big concrete pads. Campground host was very friendly. Great value for what you get. Be sure to double check and see what your hookups are as our site only has electric.

    Barkshed Recreation Area

    Mostly walkin tent sites

Visited here on Oct 7, 2025. Did not camp here. There are a handful of first-come, first-serve primitive sites. I only saw one drive-in site down near the creek. There are about 4 walk-in tent sites up a driveway into a parking area. The walk-in sites are close to the parking area. One site, which is not quite level, has a picnic table. The walk-in sites have metal fire rings. There are 2 clean vault toilets with tp at the campground. No potable water. The tent sites have a dirt and grass surface. There are a few shade trees. Starlink connectivity is possible. No AT&T and T-Mobile service. Nice swimming hole down by the creek. Access to the North Sylamore Creek Trail is at this recreation area. Note that the unpaved forest road approaching the recreation area from highway 14 is sketchy in spots due to Spring storm damage. Sections were being regraded during my visit. Low clearance, 2wd passenger vehicles can make it, but should tread carefully. Also note that, due to storm damage, Tie Ridge Road between Barkshed and Gunner Pool Road was only open to 4x4 vehicles at the time of my visit.

    Fantastic and beautiful

We stayed for 3 nights on sites 64 and 65. Absolutely beautiful views. Some damage from flooding but didn't really notice. Bathrooms and bath house were clean. Stay if you get a chance.

    cranfield park

    Everything you need plus beauty

I don’t think there is a bad site in the large campground. Most sites have at least some lake view. Roads are paved and can accommodate large rigs. Most sites are pretty level. Usual tables and fire rings plus lamp poles and some sites have covers for the tables if there are no trees. The sites that don’t have a lake view and nestled in woods and are more private. Though we don’t find a hiking trail the road around the park offered plenty of mileage for us. There is also a marina and access to the shore line for fishing. We were here the first weekend in October and it was a third to half full.

    Lakeview - Bull Shoals Lake

    Lovely spot

Clean, tree covered spots with larger gravel. I love that you don’t get that fine grit in your rig. People are kind and fun. I will return. Great for visiting Gettysburg

    Gilbert RV Park

Owner treated us like family !!!

When we pulled into the campground we were met with friendly smiles ! Jim and his wife are super nice and very helpful!! We got all setup and enjoyed our time around Gilbert. The quiet little town with some live music occasionally. Probably just a little over a quarter mile walk to the river or drive down to gravel bed where you can park. Take all your stuff and play in the river all day. There is a float service in Gilbert. Restrooms are separate from the showers. Men's and women's. They also have chickens so you might hear that Rooster every morning !! We had a super nice time here !!! Very simple place to stay. Just respect the camp rules and don't get too loud !! Please don't show up super late ! Jim and his wife are elderly !!! ( Just my opinion )

Guide to Melbourne

Camping around Melbourne, AR centers on the Ozark National Forest's northern edge where elevations range from 600 to 1,400 feet with distinct seasonal changes. Winter temperatures regularly dip below freezing, while summer camping means preparing for overnight lows in the 60s and daytime highs reaching the 90s. Several campgrounds close seasonally during winter months, requiring advance planning for off-season trips.

What to do

Cave exploration: 10 minutes from Blanchard Springs Recreation Area, visitors can tour a limestone cave system with guided tours ranging from accessible walkways to challenging spelunking options. "Cavern Tours are very cool! Keep food stuffs put away. Bring Bug spray...Lots," suggests Jarrod L. about Blanchard Springs Recreation Area.

Mountain biking on wooded trails: 1-2 miles from camp. "Quick access to the Sylamore Trail, the creek, and nearby mountain biking trails," notes Arkansas F. at Sylamore Creek Camp. The connecting trails form a network through the Ozark forest with moderate technical sections and creek crossings.

Fly fishing in tailwaters: 30 minutes north of Melbourne. The Norfork River below the dam offers premium trout fishing. "Great spot to fish or kayak has a boat ramp but the creek was rather low surprising since the lake at Mountain Home was flooded. Clear stream," reports one camper about the conditions at Dam - Quarry.

Folk music experiences: Walking distance from town. Mountain View hosts regular music gatherings that draw many campers. "We are here for the Bluegrass and Fried Chicken festival this weekend at the center. It is within walking distance with a secret walkthrough from the campground to the Folk Center grounds," shares Ashley B. from Ozark RV Park.

What campers like

Private swimming holes: Away from crowds. At Gunner Pool Recreation Area, visitors appreciate the secluded water access. "If you hike through the rec pool area it will lead you to the lake for some private skinny dipping. I look forward to being back there. In the off season for more privacy of course," says Hasan A.

Spacious campsites: Room to spread out. Gunner Pool Recreation Area campers consistently mention the ample space between sites. "The camp sites are well kept and very roomy," notes Brandie D. This contrasts with more crowded commercial campgrounds in the region.

Creek-front camping: Direct water access. Holiday Mountain Resort offers sites right on the water. "Creek is full of smallmouth bass, great swimming holes for the kids, and some shallow wading areas to lounge in chairs or find crawfish," explains Ethan W., highlighting the accessibility of water activities.

Shaded sites: Relief from summer heat. Many campgrounds feature mature trees that provide natural cooling. "Very shaded and mature trees. It is located not far from town on a busy highway Highway 5 but once you pull off the road you would never know," reports N.I. about Blue Sky RV Park.

What you should know

Limited connectivity: Plan accordingly. Cell service varies dramatically between campgrounds. "Nice, clean and beautiful! No cell service and that was perfect!" reports Angela L. about her stay at Gunner Pool. However, coverage improves closer to Mountain View.

Seasonal crowding: May-September busiest. Many campgrounds fill quickly during peak months. "Can be crowded in the summer but very quiet. Lots of summer activities to do. Views are beautiful," shares Leslie D. about Dam - Quarry.

Flooding concerns: Check conditions. Spring rains can affect access to some sites. "You drive over the spring to camp so be sure the water is not up before you make the drive!" warns Carla T. about Blanchard Springs Recreation Area, emphasizing the need to verify water levels before arrival.

Weather variability: Pack layers. The Ozark region experiences significant temperature swings, particularly in spring and fall. "Absolutely stunning in the fall," notes Nikki M. about Gunner Pool Recreation Area, referring to cooler temperatures and changing foliage that make autumn camping popular.

Tips for camping with families

Creekside recreation: Shallow water options. The many creeks provide natural entertainment for kids. "Great swimming holes for the kids, and some shallow wading areas to lounge in chairs or find crawfish," says Ethan W. about Holiday Mountain Resort.

Accessibility considerations: Some sites better than others. Blanchard Springs Recreation Area offers well-maintained facilities suitable for families. "Beautiful caverns with lots of hiking and water activities and a no-frills campground among rolling hills. Lots to do outside the park too," shares Lynn G.

Kid-friendly camping: Spacious sites. Families appreciate room for children to play safely. "Very kid friendly for swimming or walking or biking around in the campground. We will be back," states Bobby S. about Holiday Mountain Resort.

Wildlife education: Learning opportunities. The forest setting provides chances to explore nature. "Be sure to visit the hatchery across the street," suggests Shana D. regarding the fish hatchery near Dam - Quarry campground, which offers free tours showing trout development stages.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Check access carefully. Many campgrounds have limited big rig access. "It's certainly a family campground with more tents than RV's. Not really big rig friendly although there was a bus in site 16, probably the best site in the campground," reports steve M. about Blanchard Springs.

Utilities: Varied availability. Full hookups aren't universal in the Melbourne area. "Great pull through sites. Great sites for family camping... 30 and 50 amp service cable TV available, free WiFi high speed with additional charge," notes N.I. about Blue Sky RV Park.

Parking surfaces: Mostly gravel. Most RV sites aren't paved, which affects leveling. "Gravel pads that are level," mentions Wayne P. about Blue Sky RV Park, though conditions vary widely between campgrounds and sites.

Access roads: Navigation challenges. Many campgrounds require careful driving. "3 miles down a gravel, but well maintained roadway, the campground sat nestled between to sections of the water way," explains Crystal C. about Gunner Pool Recreation Area.
