    Fun but dirty and noisy

Great Lake if you can hop on a kayak and get away from the day beach area. Weekends during the summer are crazy. It’s the only real lake in the whole area so it is what it is. We go 3/4 times a year. Bird watching is amazing. Also can hike the trail and see some cows. Water and electric on sites plus fire pits. 6/25/2020

    Tucson - Lazydays KOA

Not pretty but many amenities available

General: Large KOA campground laid out in typical RV style with no privacy/separation between sites. There is every imaginable kind of site here from tent sites (with water and electric) to back-in sites with water and electric to FHU sites, some with covered sites to sites with private pet areas or play structures. There are also cabins sprinkled throughout.

Site Quality: Most sites are gravel; some have grass. All are level. Amenities vary per site. Ours had a round table with four chairs (in lieu of a picnic table)

Bath/Shower: In okay condition but then I saw a sign that they were scheduled to be remodeled a few months after our stay.

Activities: There are so many offerings including two pools, a hot tub, a fitness center, corn hole, putting green, basketball, and bike/surrey rentals. Also a daily “schedule of fun” with daily classes including Zumba and yoga, arts and crafts, bingo, etc.

Other amenities: On-site restaurant (delivery to your camper available), laundry, little lending library, pet wash.

This campground is located in a less desirable part of Tucson with very few (if any) grocery stores, restaurants, etc. nearby. There is nothing scenic about the area and the campground is located on a busy street so you will hear road noise (and an occasional train). While we appreciated all the amenities, we prefer campgrounds with more privacy and scenery. This was a last-minute reservation when our plans changed and worked for an overnight stay.

    Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground

The most comfortable campground so far

Can't give this one high enough stars.

We're van camping and working remotely, so our priorities are internet connectivity, electricity, and running water.

The sites are all nice and flat, very well maintained, and pretty well spaced out. For the desert, there's surprisingly good vegetation between sites for privacy (but it is the desert).

The bathrooms are plentiful, immaculate, and have hot water, showers, heated hand dryers, and a dish washing station... All open, even in the winter!

Decent cell coverage on both verizon and t mobile, plus good free WiFi. Our site, in particular, had some issues with the different providers, depending on the direction of the wind, but I was able to work all day.

Our only itty bitty gripe is that the fire rings did not have grills. But really, that's nothing.

    Would gladly stay again!

Oh, and there's some pretty nice trails and caves, too. Make sure you reserve your tour well in advance

    Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground

    Very cool state park

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Regional/Public Park — Grounds that are on public lands, and have a cost for entry and/or overnight stay. Ratings for this category are based on: Cost: 5 Allure of the park/lands: 4 Amenities as available (bathrooms, showers, hookups, etc): 5 Layout and privacy of sites: 4

We wish we had more time to spend here! We used these grounds as a jumping-off point to visit Tombstone (meh), Bisbee & Lowell AZ along with a few other small ghost towns. We also headed to Chiricahua National Monument on our way out of here, though it is a trek(about 90 minutes). The area is remote and has a beautiful mountain backdrop. We weren’t able to explore the caverns at the State Park but will on our next visit! We’ve heard the tours fill up daily, so make reservations for your planned stay.

The price is very fair at $30/ night for electricity and water hookups. The showers and bathrooms were always clean. The layout was quite nice with plenty of personal space.

Worth mentioning, we were there in January and it was very, very cold. We were unaware just how cold AZ could get. This was our awakening.

    Enjoyed it here

Nice RV resort, pool, hot tub, gym, laundry, playgrounds, and a rib restaurant on site. Some sites had hammocks, a few had private dog "parks" (approximately 3' aluminum fencing with chicken wire attached on inside of fence to prevent escapes), some had fire chimneys built into the site, they also had a row of solar panels raised high enough above the site to provide shade when parking under them. The sites have decorative rock, concrete pad and usually a nice round metal table with 4 matching chairs or a higher table with 4 chairs. My site, as did a lot of others, had flowing fruit trees, other sites had different types of beautiful trees. The hook ups were easy to see, easy to access and we're illuminated at night. In the evening they have life entertainment and beautiful fire bowls situated around adirondack chairs at the pool area. Very pleasant atmosphere. There's a mail room, a gift shop and valet trash pickup at your site. A gate guard is either on duty or the front office will buzz you in. I enjoyed their landscaping since it was so different that what I see at home. I fell in love with the barrel cactus so much so that I picked one up to take home with me from a near by garden store only to find out that don't grow in my home state of Florida. (Probably why I have never seen one before.) Not wanting it to die I donated it to the park where they assured me it would be planted and enjoyed. The park is very clean and we'll maintained. The employees friendly and helpful. This was a great park. I look forward to returning one day.

    Wonderful resort

This place is incredible. Huge gated property with many different site options. Each site offers a metal table with 4 chairs. Some have playgrounds, private doggy runs, a fireplace, a sky deck, a covered patio, and many other awesome options. There are 2 main community areas. The larger one by the front check in offers a BBQ restaurant, a pool with spa, gym, laundry, putt putt, pickleball court, basketball court, corn hole, playground, indoor rec room with games and pool and other outdoor games. There is also multiple events throughout each day, some for kids, some for family, and some for adults. The second area has a playground, 24 hour laundry, clean bathrooms, a dog wash, and a pool with a spa that is still a very decent size. There are also multiple dog parks and bathrooms throughout the park. Phone service for Verizon and ATT are not good, but they do offer wifi. Very quick check in and quiet neighborhood. Huge property so not all of the spots were filled during our time in May, so we had empty spaces surrounding us. The spaces are not tight at all and very easy to park in. They have curbside trash pickup 24/7, so all you have to do is leave your trash on the curb and you’re good to go! Overall wonderful stay and highly recommend!

Best Campsites for Snowbirds In Arizona

When spending time on the road many times you will find campsite after campsite that is welcoming but not quite like home away from home. But when you drive through Tucson, there is a mecca filled with winter bird campers and long term campers which create a home away from home.

With only tent sites available on the facility, we were fortunate to find a site, however when we arrived we were so excited by the facilities we extended our stay by a day.

Office staff immediately greeted us and let us know about the facilities, which happened to feature a mini golf course, an indoor events facility, 2 swimming pools and hot tubs, an indoor recreation area and multiple on camp fire chinineas. In addition there was a fishing pond and dog park area.

Each of the 4 campsites were considered to be regular campsites instead of upgrade sites but when we arrived it was the most delux sites we had encountered along the way.

Pad sites were large and the first to actually accommodate our large tent and the ground was u like any we had seen before at a site. The soft mulch was similar to that of a modern day playground and made for a much more comfortable sleep over the two days we were there.

In addition to the standard picnic table of most facilities, this campground offered a kitchen facility at each campsite including a large copper sink and food storage as well as electricity and overhead lighting in the pergola designed to allow shade from the harsh Arizona sun.

It was the closest thing to glamping we had encountered by far!

Then as an added bonus, fresh fruit trees abounded ready for the picking. The front desk informed us of the allowance to pick what you want as everything was in season! An amazing treat on the road!

We spent many hours at the pool facility, enjoyed amazing neighbors, used the wifi and even did a load of laundry while in Tucson. The facility really was like a home away from home on the road.

    🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰

If the scale went higher we would rank it more Bunnies. There were no real areas we could see for improvement. Staff was very accommodating, long term and short term residents of the facility were amazing and this was a desert oasis like no other!

Guide to Tubac

Camping options near Tubac, Arizona range from state parks to RV resorts scattered across the Sonoran Desert at elevations between 3,000-4,000 feet. The region experiences hot summers with temperatures frequently exceeding 100°F, while winter nights can drop below freezing. Most campgrounds remain accessible year-round, though sites at Patagonia Lake State Park fill quickly during winter months when snowbirds arrive.

What to do

Explore historic sites: The Empire Ranch near Tubac provides access to a preserved working cattle ranch with educational exhibits. "We stayed while visiting family. It wasn't crowded as snowbirds had left. Wide sites and a lot of resort amenities, including two pools, fitness gym, pickleball courts," notes a visitor to Tucson - Lazydays KOA.

Visit nearby caverns: Kartchner Caverns State Park offers underground cave tours with unique formations located about 60 miles east of Tubac. "The park itself is very nice. The spaces are adequately far apart from each other. It does have several pull through spaces, which is nice. The showers were clean," reports a visitor to Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground.

Bird watching: The grasslands surrounding Tubac serve as important bird habitat. "Birder's paradise in April. Camped in site 10 - face in. Our cord/hose worked fine for our 28' rig and car. Lake lovely to canoe, we biked all over the camp," shares a camper at Patagonia Lake State Park.

What campers like

Peaceful desert environment: The open desert landscape provides quiet camping with minimal light pollution. "Google Maps attempted to get us in off Sunset. Big dip in entry road would bottom out most RVs. We then followed directions to take the dirt road across from Casino on Valencia and made it in no problem," advises a visitor to BLM off of W Valencia Rd.

Clean facilities: Many established campgrounds maintain high standards for bathrooms and common areas. "Nice little get away campground. Only 4 RV spots here and it's first come first serve. It was empty when we were there," reports a camper at El Bosquecito.

Accessibility to town: Many campgrounds offer convenient access to nearby communities. "There's a store there with basics. We had a reasonable back-in site with electricity and water. Only stayed one night but would definitely consider returning," says a visitor at Patagonia Lake State Park Campground.

What you should know

High summer temperatures: The Tubac area regularly experiences summer temperatures over 100°F, requiring preparation for heat. "We visited while exploring Tucson. It may look and feel remote, but good shopping, restaurants and attractions are very close," notes a visitor to Cactus Country RV Park.

Winter popularity: Campgrounds fill quickly from November through March with snowbirds seeking glamping close to Tubac, Arizona. "Great spot. Very flat, can get any size RV in here. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars is there are a few people you can tell live here," shares a BLM camper.

Limited water sources: Many dispersed camping areas near Tubac lack water access, requiring campers to bring supplies. "Stay only at marked sites. Some are really big, others compact. The ranch is wonderful to visit as is Las Cienegas with their amazing diversity of landscapes," advises a visitor to Empire Ranch.

Tips for camping with families

Choose established campgrounds: Families benefit from amenities like bathrooms and shade structures. "Your kids will never complain of boredom here. There is an unlimited amount of activities to keep them occupied. Laundry room and showers were clean. RV sites were spacious in my opinion," shares a visitor at Tucson-Lazydays KOA.

Consider glamping options: Luxury tent camping near Tubac provides comfort for families with young children. "Pricey, but worth it. Sites with outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, swings, patios.... lots of activities for everyone. No exclusions on yr of RV or camper. Tents welcome," notes another KOA visitor.

Check for educational programs: Several campgrounds offer junior ranger activities. "The park hosts the caverns and cave tours and a museum about the area. We are headed on a cave tour today! Nice trails surround the park and clearly marked for either hiking, bike or equestrian," reports a Kartchner Caverns visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site selection matters: Many RV sites near Tubac have varying levels and amenities. "The campground was not clean at all. Dog poop was everywhere and litter was strewn all over the campground. Our site alone was full of bits of broken plastic, paper, dog poop, and cigarette buds," warns a visitor to Patagonia Lake State Park Campground.

Bring leveling equipment: Many desert camping areas feature uneven terrain. "We stayed here for 5 nights at the end of March, 2023. The campground has paved roads, showers, dump station, water & electric hookups and the usual campsite set-up," shares a Kartchner Caverns visitor.

Check generator rules: Some campgrounds restrict generator use. "Good spot, level ground, lots of room. Any size camper will work. Turn north on the dirt road just west of the casino and follow the power lines north up a coupe hundred yards and you will see the camping area just off your right," notes a BLM camper.
