Eleven miles of dirt road separate White Horse Lake Campground from Williams, with the final stretch described by campers as washboard conditions that require patience but remain passable for most vehicles. This Forest Service campground sits at 8,500 feet elevation within Kaibab National Forest, where tall pines surround individual sites and the small mountain lake anchors outdoor activities from May through September.
The campground maintains a reputation for cleanliness that stands out among forest service properties. Daniel L. notes the facilities offer "clean and well stocked toilets and water are the basic amenities," while camp hosts keep vault toilets odor-free and well-maintained. Sites feature gravel tent pads, fire rings with grill grates, and concrete picnic tables, with many accommodating multiple tents and offering decent spacing between neighbors.
Fishing draws many visitors to the 15-acre lake, where no motorized boats are permitted but kayaks and canoes work well for accessing deeper water. A seasonal food vendor sometimes operates during summer months, renting paddle boards and selling snacks, though availability varies by year and Forest Service permits. Several hiking trails branch out from the campground, including access to Sycamore Falls and routes leading to Sycamore Canyon rim views.
Loop C sites 58 and Loop D sites 63-64 receive frequent mentions for their proximity to the water, while some E loop sites sit farther from the lake but offer more space. Deborah C. warns that "getting here was 10 miles of pure hell" but acknowledges the campground quality makes up for access challenges. The campground accommodates RVs up to 50 feet, though no hookups are available and the rough access road may concern some drivers.
Reservations through Recreation.gov help secure preferred sites during peak summer months. For additional forest camping options, campsites near Kaibab National Forest provide alternatives when this popular destination fills up.
