Falling asleep to the sound of the Manitou River running a few feet from your tent is one of the more distinctive features of George H. Crosby Manitou State Park Campground, near campsites near Finland, Minnesota. All 22 sites here are hike-in only, with no RV access and no ranger station on-site. The park sits about 20 minutes off Highway 61, which keeps it quieter than the busier North Shore stops, though the parking lot can fill up on summer weekends.
The trails connecting the parking area to individual sites are genuinely demanding. Exposed roots, large rocks, and significant elevation changes are the norm rather than the exception, and some sections have been washed out. Mike O. describes the trails as "rugged but well maintained and marked," which captures the balance well. Trekking poles help on steeper stretches, and a paper map is worth bringing since cell service is essentially nonexistent throughout the park. Bug pressure runs high in summer, particularly in July and August, and multiple reviewers recommend permethrin-treated clothing alongside DEET.
River-adjacent sites are the most sought-after. Sites 3, 4, 5, and 8 sit close to the Manitou River and give campers easy access to water for filtering. Site 6 sits on an overlook with sightlines toward Lake Superior. The Manitou River Cascades draw day hikers and are roughly a half mile from some of the more central sites. Horseshoe Ridge Camp lies just east of the park for campers who want a nearby alternative. Deadfall varies by site, so carrying in firewood is the more reliable approach.
Each site includes a fire pit and pit toilet, but bear boxes are not present at every site, so food hanging gear is worth packing. Water is available from a hand pump near the trailhead entrance; all other water in the park requires treatment. The campground is open year-round, and reviewers note the trails change character noticeably in fall. At $20 per night with reservations available online, this is a good match for backpackers comfortable with a true pack-in experience rather than a car-camping setup.
