With over 26 miles of Lake Michigan coastline, Wilderness State Park Camping sits on a peninsula where campers can view the Mackinac Bridge from their sites. The park operates three separate camping areas: Pines Campground offers spacious 20/30 amp electric sites set back from the water, while East and West Lakeshore campgrounds provide waterfront sites with full hookups for RVs up to 50 feet.
The lakeshore sites feature paved pads, solid picnic tables, and what one reviewer called "the beefiest campfire pit ever to come standard in a state park." Each waterfront site maintains uniform spacing and lake access, eliminating the need to hunt for the best spot. Sydney notes that "you have a pretty good view of the water and your own private path right down to the beach," though campers should expect high winds that can challenge tent setup and fire starting.
Miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails wind through the park's interior, while the coastline and nearby islands create opportunities for kayaking. The shallow sandbars at Sturgeon Bay warm the water considerably during summer months. Campers consistently find fossils along the shoreline, and the park's location provides easy access to Mackinac Island ferries in nearby Mackinac City. Wildlife sightings include bald eagles and various bird species.
Summer weekends book completely, but weekday availability and last-minute cancellations appear regularly on the Michigan DNR reservation system. Austin confirms "vault toilets but they are kept clean," though shower facilities close by early October. The single shower house for Pines Campground creates wait times during peak hours. Water spigots remain operational longer into fall than the main facilities.
For extended northern Michigan exploration, consider nearby Cecil Lakeview City Park or O'Neal Lake campsite - Wilderness State Park for additional nights. Book well in advance for summer stays, and bring wind-resistant gear for exposed lakeshore sites.
