The sound of waves carries across every site at Horseneck Beach State Reservation, a 100-site oceanfront campground set behind the dunes of Buzzards Bay in Westport Point, Massachusetts. No trees break the sightlines here. That openness means wind off the water is a constant companion, cold nights are common even in summer, and the lack of shade makes afternoon heat a real factor on exposed, paved sites.
Sites are angled along one-way roads, which makes backing in manageable for larger rigs. The campground accommodates RVs up to 35 feet with electric, water, and sewer hookups available, though not all sites have electric connections, so checking carefully at booking matters. Water spigots are distributed throughout. Geoff R. notes that "restrooms and showers are clean and well kept," though cleanliness has been inconsistent across past visits, with some reviewers flagging the bathrooms as needing attention during busy stretches. A dump station sits in an accessible location near the campground center.
Beach access is the main draw, and it is genuinely close: most sites are within a one-to-two minute walk through mobility mats that connect the campground to the shore. The beach fronting the campground is rocky and cobblestoned, but a day-use area to the west gets raked and cleared of rocks regularly, though it draws larger crowds. A roughly two-mile hiking trail leads out onto a spit of land where walkers can loop back along a sandy stretch. Fishing is also available along the shore. Stargazing is worth noting: the area gets dark enough at night that the Milky Way is visible on clear evenings.
Reservations are strongly recommended. The campground fills quickly, and the online system requires a two-night minimum, though calling directly sometimes yields single-night availability early in the season. Massachusetts residents pay $28 per night; non-residents pay considerably more. Ticks have been reported as a significant issue by multiple visitors, particularly in late summer, so bringing repellent and doing thorough checks is practical advice rather than precaution. Groceries are roughly ten minutes away. Campers looking for nearby alternatives can also find places to camp near Westport Point or consider Second Beach Family Campground and Meadowlark RV Park across the Rhode Island border.
Campers who book a site along the dune line, pack layers for cool nights, and come prepared for an open, wind-exposed layout will find this a worthwhile base for a few days on the Massachusetts south coast.
