Rock climbers and hikers exploring Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park will find North Rim Campground positioned at the end of a paved road that winds through pinyon and juniper forest. This first-come, first-served campground operates on an honor system, with 13 sites arranged in a single loop where campers pay fees at a self-service station.
The campground sits tucked among scrubby oaks and evergreens that provide natural shade and visual barriers between sites, though Crystal C. notes that "sites were average size and offered great views." Each site includes a large picnic table, fire ring, and bear-proof storage box—a necessity given the black bears that frequent the area. Vault toilets occupy the center of the loop alongside potable water spigots, though water availability is seasonal and trucked in during drought years.
The Chasm View Nature Trail begins directly from the campground, offering canyon overlooks without the crowds found on the more accessible South Rim. Oliver V. confirms the "Chasm trail starts from camp site with amazing canyon views." More ambitious hikers can access the Exclamation Point trail from the nearby ranger station. The campground attracts international big wall climbers who use it as a base for multi-day canyon routes.
RVs up to 22 feet can access most sites, though the tight loop and lack of pull-through options require careful maneuvering. Cell service remains nonexistent throughout the park, with limited WiFi available only at the ranger station. Yellow jackets become problematic during dry summers as they swarm vehicles seeking water sources. Mule deer regularly graze through campsites, particularly during dawn and dusk hours.
The campground operates from April through mid-November, with sites filling by early afternoon during peak summer weekends. Arrive before 1 PM on Friday for weekend camping, and bring extra water during drought conditions when trucked supplies run low.
