A first-come, first-served campground on Lower Slide Lake in Teton National Forest, Atherton Creek runs $20 per site per night and operates from late May through September. The road in is paved to the campground, though several reviewers flag the last couple of miles as rough gravel, and ongoing road construction has occasionally added extra time to the drive. Sites max out at 30 feet for RVs, and the campground provides drinking water, vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and bear food storage boxes at each site. No showers on-site.
The sites are spread across a hillside facing the lake, with the most sought-after spots sitting directly on the water. Reviewers consistently name sites 14 and 15 as the lakeside positions worth arriving early to claim. The spacing between sites is generous, which contributes to a degree of privacy uncommon at more developed Forest Service campgrounds. A camp host is typically on-site and, by multiple accounts, attentive and helpful. Wildlife sightings, including deer, antelope, fox, and bear, come up frequently in reviews.
The lake gives campers direct access to swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. "The creek allows swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing," notes Daniel C., whose party made use of the beach for most of their stay. Weekends bring more foot traffic to the beach area, particularly from families with children. Cell coverage is minimal throughout camp, though a small signal can sometimes be found near the boat dock.
Campers using Atherton Creek as a base for Grand Teton National Park will find it a reasonable drive to Moose and other park entry points, road conditions permitting. Gros Ventre River Road Dispersed, Teton NF and Taylor Ranch Road Dispersed Camping are nearby alternatives for those wanting more flexibility, while the Gros Ventre Wilderness sits a short distance to the southeast for backcountry options. For a broader look at campgrounds near Teton National Forest, The Dyrt's listings cover the surrounding area.
Midweek arrivals have the best odds of finding open sites. Arrive Thursday morning if possible, as the campground can reach capacity by Friday afternoon. Bring your own toilet paper as a precaution, and plan for no generator use outside the posted 8 to 10 window.
