Iron Creek Lake Campground sits at an elevation of approximately 5,300 feet in the Black Hills National Forest, about 49 miles from Devils Tower National Monument. The campground encircles a 24-acre lake with year-round fishing opportunities. Most sites require leveling equipment due to the hilly terrain surrounding the water.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Iron Creek Lake offers both trout and bass fishing in its cool mountain waters. "It's a Beautiful Mountain Lake. Wildlife all around. Great Trout, and even some Bass fishing," notes Russ N. from Iron Creek Lake Campground.
Hiking trails: A moderate trail circles the entire lake, providing consistent water views. "Hiking, fishing, and great views," explains Kevin K. about the recreational options at Iron Creek. The path is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels.
Water recreation: During summer months, kayak rentals are available for exploring the lake. "This is a great lake to have a water toy like a kayak, and there are rentals available too," mentions Aaron S. from Iron Creek Lake Campground.
What campers like
Peaceful off-season camping: Visiting during weekdays or shoulder seasons provides a quieter experience. "I stayed for 2 nights in the off season. When I called ahead the hosts said it was on them due to the off season and said to enjoy the space. Very very lovey people," shares Abigail C. from Iron Creek Lake Campground.
Lake views from campsites: Many RV sites offer direct views of the water. "This lake is very pretty! Nice little trails all around the lake and most rv sites have a lake view," explains Hannah P. about the setting at Iron Creek Lake.
Affordability: Campers report reasonable rates compared to other area campgrounds. "Super friendly and affordable, and views that were amazing!" says Lisa R. about her experience at Iron Creek Lake.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Prepare for a digital detox while camping in this region. "Absolutely no phone service!" warns Hannah P. from Iron Creek Lake Campground about connectivity at the campground.
Water pressure challenges: While water hookups exist, filling tanks can be time-consuming. "Water up the hill to fill your tank with, just takes awhile due to low pressure," notes Hannah P. about the water situation.
Dump station limitations: The dump station position makes complete emptying difficult for some RVs. "We didn't even use the dumpstation as the way it is positioned I couldn't get the tanks dumped," explains Aaron S. regarding the facility design at Iron Creek Lake.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly water areas: Shallow beach sections accommodate younger children. "The trail around the lake is easy to walk and there is some beach area for frog catching and splashing around with little kids," recommends Aaron S. from Iron Creek Lake Campground.
On-site food options: The camp store offers simple meal solutions for busy days. "The cafe/diner has things like burgers and ice cream," notes Aaron S. about the convenient food options available.
Weekend planning caution: Holiday and summer weekends bring crowds and a different atmosphere. "We happened to be here Father's Day weekend and let me say it was way over packed and a bit annoying. Reminded me of a summer camp which is cool if you're a kid," explains Hannah P. about timing considerations.
Tips from RVers
Leveling requirements: Most sites require substantial leveling equipment. "I have a 25' camper and the site they put me in was pretty tight and on a hill as most are here. Took all my blocks and a couple big stumps but we got it figured out," shares Hannah P. from Iron Creek Lake Campground.
Size considerations: Larger rigs may face challenges at certain sites. "There are many sites here on a hill, so depending on what you get, you may be in for a tricky parking situation with a longer trailer," advises Aaron S. about managing larger RVs at Iron Creek Lake.
Equestrian camping near Devils Tower, Wyoming: While not available at Iron Creek Lake, horse-friendly camping options exist in the broader Black Hills region for those traveling with horses. Some campgrounds within 60 miles of Devils Tower offer dedicated equestrian camping areas with trailer parking and corral facilities.
