Best RV Parks & Resorts near Wilsondale, WV

Robert Newlon Airpark RV Park in Huntington features 50 sites with big-rig access and both 30-amp and 50-amp service. At Creekside Cabins & RV Park in Louisa, Kentucky, year-round camping is available with 50-amp hookups, though some sites lack fire rings. Mountain access requires careful navigation on winding roads with elevation changes. Several campgrounds in the region have limited cell service, particularly for Verizon customers, with one reviewer noting "no Verizon signal was available at the park." Dump stations are present at most parks, though weekend departure times can create lines. Many RV sites throughout the area share electrical pedestals between two campsites, requiring coordination with neighbors on amperage needs. Pet-friendly policies are common, though leash requirements are strictly enforced. Propane refill services are limited to larger facilities, with most campers advised to arrive with full tanks. During peak seasons, particularly fall foliage viewing periods, advance reservations are essential as many parks reach capacity quickly.

    Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

    It’s pretty nice

A lot of their sites have full hook up but not all of them. Read the details of the sites when booking. Some of the sites have really steep grades and aren’t big rig friendly.

Check in was a breeze had out car tags on our post.

They do have a full-time camp host on site.

I didn’t use the shower 🚿 house but they do have a couple on the grounds.

They have a putt putt course but bring your own putter and ball.

There is Verizon service but it’s spotty.

They do have WiFi but it’s very slow and not secure.

Place is very pet friendly. The people we have met here are great.

Sites are wide but really close together.

    Paintsville Lake State Park Campground

Nice lake, rec area and campground all nestled together

Spent the night here passing through. I did make a reservation just in case but there were a couple sites open. Nice, small campground, most sites are back in but there are a few pull through sites. The staff were friendly and the campground seems maintained fairly well. No wifi and Verizon is touchy. Out in the recreation area I had one bar and LTE though the data seemed pretty good. My site was right at the beginning of the campground. Inside my camper I could only get a signal if I put my phone in the window. The signal was good enough to stream and FaceTime but if I took it out of the window I’d lose signal.

The sites are nice and not on top of each other. They are a nice finer type gravel and mostly level. Big patio area with a picnic table and fire pit. Some of the sites at the front will give you a decent view of the lake, site 18 being the best I believe, I was in site 20.

It’s open year round according to the website. Not sure how big rig friendly it is and I couldn’t find any information on the website, I’d call first. I don’t recall seeing any 5th wheel or motor homes back there.

Overall, very nice campground and I would visit again. There is an 1850’s mountain house in the park just prior to the entrance to the campground/recreation area. There is a fee and you’ll have to check the hours. I forgot to take a picture but the song on the gift shop door said certain days by appointment only and I think Friday thru Sunday they were open for a period of time.

    Wildcat Camping and Fishing

    Very Nice Place

We have been here for a little over a month now. Nice level gravel sites with grass around them. Full hookups 30/50A at each site. Wifi. Could accommodate at least 40+ foot 5th wheels. There is a paylake with small shelter areas, playground, horseshoe pit, game room, community gathering area, store with snacks, drinks, tackle and other items. There are restrooms, but no showers or laundry. Beautiful area. About 11 miles to Paintsville, which has all the stores you'd need. Some closer convenience stores. Johnny and Regina, the owners, couldn't be any nicer. Very good monthly rates. Can receive mail and packages.

    Breaks Interstate Park Campground

    Great Way to Getaway

The Breaks are considered the “Grand Canyon of the south”. Great mountaintop views, hiking, geocaching, kayaking, paddle boats, a zip line, and seasonal white water rafting all available. A few miles from the campground you’ll even find river access with a sandy beach for summer fun. A wonderful getaway when you want to be away from it all. Several campground sections to choose from with primitive sites to full hookup with electric, water, and sewer. Dump stations are available also. There are laundry facilities and bathhouses (didn’t use either so not sure on condition), playgrounds, picnic shelters, cabins, and inns. Each campsite had a fire ring and picnic table. Spots are definitely not level, so bring a variety of blocks—you’ll need them. No outside lights at the sites so when it’s dark it’s d-a-r-k. Beautiful campground.

    Oak Hill Campground

One-Night Adventure: Our Shakedown Trip in the New Travel Trailer

Campsite Review for Site 6 – Gateway to Wayne National Forest

Our recent camping trip at this campground was an excellent way to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Wayne National Forest. The serene forest setting provided a perfect backdrop for a relaxing outdoor adventure, with the campground offering all the basics needed for a comfortable stay.

We stayed at Site 6 in our travel trailer, enjoying the ease of a pull-through site. Although the water and electric hookups are on the opposite side unless you drive through the loop the wrong way, this setup has an unexpected benefit—it faces directly toward the woods. This orientation allowed us to savor the tranquility of the forest, adding a layer of privacy and a more intimate connection with nature.

While the sites are decently sized, they are closely positioned with minimal separation, which might limit privacy in other areas. However, the majestic surroundings of Wayne National Forest more than make up for this. The proximity to hiking trails, wildlife sightings, and the peaceful ambiance of the trees create an immersive experience that’s hard to beat.

All in all, this campground is a fantastic base for exploring Wayne National Forest. The combination of basic amenities, convenient access, and the enchanting forest environment makes it a great spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Lake View Campground — Beech Fork State Park

    Beautiful and secluded

We visited in the end of October 2021. The colors and the views were spectacular. The drive into the park was very curvy mountain back roads. The site included a fire pit with grill and a picnic table. There was a fair amount of space between sites. Approximately 50-75 feet apart. The bath house was nice but could use a little refreshening. There are many activities including a shooting range, frisbee golf course, swimming pool, playground just to name a few. With Verizon as our service provider no cell signal was available at the park. Overall, we give 3 stars. Minus one star for no cell service and minus another star due to maintenance. Overall, very nice park.

    Breaks Interstate Park Campground

Nice Campground, Challenging to get to.

Nice Campground, once you get here. The roads to this amazing State Park are two lane and twisting. We have a 38' 5er and a CrewCab Dually tow vehicle. We didn't have a lot of issues getting here but it is quite mountainous with a lot of climbs to get here. The Park is well appointed and the campsites are nice for a state park. Be careful when choosing a site as some are challenging to get into with larger units. We had a pull through which was big enough for our rig. Sites are gravel and spacious. Fire ring/grill combo provided at each site. Bathhouses were clean and well stocked. Be sure to bring all necessary supplies BEFORE you get here, nearest stores are a 20 minute drive away on crooked mountain roads. Will we return? Maybe for a special event but not for a general getaway

    Jenny Wiley State Park Campground

Needs to be updated and repaired

Roads in campground are rough in places. Electrical boxes are in rough shape at some sites. 30 amp kept tripping the breaker. WiFi does not work. Several sites have full hookup but sewer hookups need to be repaired and water hookups are far away.

    Grayson Lake State Park Campground

    Below average

This is a small campground situated next to a golf course. There are several nice sites but others are not ideal. Our site (13) was ok, other than the scattered broken glass and trash. The main issue was lack of oversight from staff. The site next to us was completely packed with their fifth wheel, a large tent, pop up canopy, four vehicles, a kayak trailer, and a boat that was in the corner of our site. They did not leash their dogs and did not pick up after them. We didn’t complain about them encroaching on our site but felt that the campground should enforce their own rules. Another site nearby setup a construction light at night that lit up the entire campground like a stadium and stayed on late into the night. Basically, campers are left to do as they please regardless of whether it is inconsiderate of other campers. The positive is the location is only a few minutes from the boat ramp for the most popular kayaking spot.

Guide to Wilsondale

RV parks near Wilsondale, West Virginia provide access to the surrounding Appalachian foothills where elevations range from 600 to 1,200 feet. The area features a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons and average summer temperatures around 85°F. Camping facilities in this region often serve as base camps for ATV riders accessing the nearby Hatfield-McCoy trail systems.

What to do

ATV trail riding: Pappy's Creekside Camp connects directly to local trail systems. "The owner and staff very friendly and even set us up with a local group to show us around. They also offer parking and you don't have to worry about any one messing with your stuff because there is alway some one there," shares a tent camper.

Water recreation: Lake activities dominate summer options, especially at Oasis Point RV Resort. "They have a large pond that has a nice beach, a huge slide and a zip line. They have kayaks, paddle boards and floats first come first serve," reports a camper who enjoyed having the pond almost entirely to themselves.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Yatesville Lake State Park Campground receives praise for its generous spacing between campsites. "The campsites are a LONG distance from each other. You won't even hear your neighbors," explains a regular visitor who also appreciates the numerous hiking trails throughout the property.

Family-friendly activities: Oasis Point Resort caters to families with children through multiple water features. "Super nice, especially if you have kids. What you should know

Limited overnight stays: Some campgrounds restrict length of stay. Valley Breeze RV Campground enforces strict policies. "I was going to be in the area for 5 days. Noise considerations: Several campgrounds experience transportation noise. "The only real problem comes with the train tracks right here. The trains are close and do blow their whistle for crossing by the office," notes a camper at Robert Newlon Airpark RV Park.
