Most cabin rentals provide beds and basic furniture but require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary widely, from simple fire rings to cabins with full kitchenettes. Some cabins have outdoor grills for cooking, while others may include small refrigerators and microwaves. Larger campgrounds like Salt Fork State Park and Grand Vue Park offer on-site restaurants or camp stores with basic provisions. Campers should check specific amenity lists when booking as features differ significantly between parks.

      Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

      Pet friendly campsite, with electric

While most of the campgrounds in the park are no pets- there are 2 loops that allow your furry companions! Loop F includes electric spots! Loved seeing the 'neighbors' dogs get excited and curious when I walked my 4-legged best friend around the site. Clean area , close to a modern bathroom (a few stalls & even 2 showers!) Looking forward to going back at the end of the month.

      Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

      Very wooded campground

General: 50-site (all but six with electric hookups) campground plus two yurts and three cabins. Two sites are handicap accessible.

Site Quality: The sites have gravel pads (except the handicap-accessible ones which were paved). The sites were completely covered with leaves when we were there which made it challenging to determine where the actual (narrow) pad was. Sites appeared to be level. A fire ring and wooden picnic table complete the site.

Bathhouse: A little dated but clean. Two of the stall doors did not latch properly. Didn't use the shower so cannot comment but there was a sign indicating it took a while for the water to warm up.

Activities/Amenities: There is a small camper store, laundry, and a playground. In season, there is lake swimming and a boat dock. There is a fishing area, mini-golf and disc golf, and several short hiking trails. Unfortunately, since we arrived late afternoon and had to depart early the following day (and were camping off-season), we could not take advantage of any of these things. What we lose in activities, we gain in a quieter camping experience with fewer crowds, which is generally preferable for us!

      Ryerson Station State Park Campground

Nice Little Park...with Loud, Destructive Neighbors

This is a nice little park that used to have a lake…until it was undermined (literally) and destroyed by the nearby coal company. The trails are pleasant, especially the one leading to the old Chess Cemetery. The PADCNR works hard to make this park into an attraction despite the fact that it no longer has its lake as a focal point. This means that they maintain a cold water swimming pool in the summer. And they keep the campground open year-round, which makes it a rarity. If you want to go camping in January, this might be the only conventional campground in PA where you can do that. The campground is pleasant, if a little…spooky. None of the spots are very secluded, but that's okay because you'll probably be the only camper here. Like much of the park, it's bordered by a public road, which means that there's some traffic--usually loud pickups and frack trucks. I've only ever camped here in the fall, when Greene County is at its most beautiful, and I've always had the campground (and most of the park) entirely to myself. There are two tiny cabins as well as sites for tents or campers. Ryerson is worth a visit. Not sure why the state can't make the coal company pay for its destruction of the lake.

      Salt Fork State Park Campground

      My Go-to Weekend Getaway

Saltfork is located about 45 minutes from my house, and makes for the perfect overnight trip.

There are tons of things to do, and lots of space in which to do them. My favorites includes hiking trails, and the lakeside dog park.

I stay in the primitive camping, it allows for more privacy and quiet. Although it also means you are relegated to the pit toilets. I personally don't mind them, but I know some campers will make the drive to the nicer shower house in the RV heavy side of the park.

Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, the fire rings in the primitive section need some work, as the grates are very old and small.

      Grand Vue Park

Right next to town with big fun and wide views

I did not stay in the cabins. I tent camped. The tent areas are out past the Vue Bar and Grill. They are spread out and each has a fire ring, picnic table and fire wood is free! The people there are great, easy check in. The tent areas are spread out and there isn’t an actual road to each of the sites. I actually thought this was cool but not if its raining and you have a small car.

The best part is the Vue Bar and Grill, the food is surprisingly good. Cooked well and is large portions. There is many other things to do there as well. They have an adventure park but we didn’t make it there. Planing to go back.

      Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

      Raccoon Creek Camping

This is a large state park offering electric only sites

The sites are set amounts the forest and there are several loops to choose from. Loop F is pet friendly. All sites are within walking distance to amenities

Amenities are quite run down but functional

Wildlife is beautiful and its a short ~10min drive to the beach area of Raccoon Creek lake.

Two (2) dump station spots and fresh water taps location throughout the park

NOTE: Many sites are not level, you will require blocks/timber to level out campers. Tent campers should choose their site using the photos on the state park site.

All sites have a paved car space.

      Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

      Camping in the trees

Electric Site 37 - pad is pretty level, plenty for our small camper and truck, on a slight hill to get to fire ring but lots of space to spread out. You could tent but not really a flat spot. We were near the non-electric cul de sac and a neighbor right across but not on top of each other. Trees are everywhere and wonderful during the fall season. We had a big night of rain and with the wind it dried up pretty quickly.

Camp store - small, not a lot in it but may be end of the season items only. Mostly shirts and mugs and very little snack food. The camp store staff were all very friendly and helpful and the store has limited WiFi if you stood in the right spot. There is a laundry room available there as well.

Dump station- 2 way and potable water on the other side of it. The only place to drop your trash too.

Trails - lots of trails to choose from. Some were pretty easy some were a little hilly. My favorite was the fern trail - lots of ferns and a very pretty stream. Hiking poles are recommended especially if it rains.

Playground - is available for kids and a huge shelter house too.

Firewood is $6 a bundle and burns well, no slab cut.

Water - have to go up to entrance as the water spouts are still shut off.

Showers - in womens the shower on the left never got warm, other two were fine. There are 4 flush toilets.

      Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

      Nice little State Park

Tomlinson Run is a small state park situated in the northern panhandle of West Virginia nestled between eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Plenty of things to do there including but not limited to…. Mini golf, hiking trails, biking, swimming, fishing, paddle boats, parks for the kids, and of course the camping. The campsites here are mainly gravel pads with the exception being the asphalt handicapped spots (2). Most spots are 30 amp with a few 50 amp (new for 2021). The park also has a few primitive spots available and some yurts and cabins to rent. I have a 38’ fifth wheel and the spots are tight for it (even the couple pull thru). Campground facilities are clean but dated. They state new facilities are coming soon. The campground is at the top of a hill and the spots are wooded and shaded. I would consider the camping to be spaced generously (room to stretch out). They have a small camp store and information available. A breakfast is available during peak season for a small fee. They do have water and a dump station available (free for campers to use).

      Atwood Lake Park Campground

      Incredible!

The Atwood Lake Campground is a true gem in a beautiful area of eastern Ohio! We’ve visited the Atwood region many times in the past but have never camped - but after this visit we’ll be back for sure. The campground is relatively new, with the campground area being completely revamped beginning in 2017. There are two overnight camping areas with seasonal sites in a separate section; we stayed in “Camp H” which is the newest area. There is a huge bathhouse with two sets of men’s and women’s restrooms and shower facilities along with a very nice laundry area. Adjoining the bathhouse area is a beautiful pavilion and children’s playground - all of which overlooks Atwood Lake. The campsites are nicely spaced though if you’re in the inner loop as we were or even some of the outer ring sites you’ll be looking right into your neighbor’s site. All sites are FHU on level concrete pads and include a metal picnic table and fire ring. If needed there are two very well equipped dump stations if you prefer to use them instead of the sewer connection at your site. Many sites are on cul de sacs directly on the lake with docks and fishing areas adjacent to the campsites. Lots of hiking trails, paved bike paths, a swimming beach and restaurant are in a nearby area. We loved the campground and will return soon!

    Guide to Wheeling

Cabins near Wheeling, West Virginia are located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains at elevations ranging from 600-1,200 feet. The region experiences four distinct seasons, with summer highs averaging in the mid-80s and winter lows frequently dropping below freezing. Seasonal operation varies significantly among rental cabins, with some properties specifically winterized for cold-weather camping while others close completely from November through March.

    What to do

Hiking extensive trail systems: Salt Fork State Park Campground offers numerous maintained hiking paths through varied terrain. "The hiking trails are in excellent condition and the park keeps them clear of fallen debris," notes one camper, who also mentions spotting "turkeys and 'turkets' and two 6 point bucks" just driving into the park.

Water recreation beyond swimming: Fishing opportunities abound at Austin Lake RV Park & Cabins, which features a lake with multiple activity options. A visitor explains, "Tons of stuff to do here... Inflatable slides and such in the lake, hiking trials, playgrounds, all sorts of stuff." This comprehensive water recreation setup provides alternatives to standard swimming areas.

Outdoor winter activities: The year-round operation at Ryerson Station State Park Campground creates unique cold-weather opportunities. One reviewer notes its uniqueness: "They keep the campground open year-round, which makes it a rarity. If you want to go camping in January, this might be the only conventional campground in PA where you can do that."

    What campers like

Private tent areas: At Tomlinson Run State Park Campground, tent campers appreciate the layout. "Most of the sites were pretty private and ours was probably the most private and had a lot of space since we were on the very end of the road / cul-de-sac," shares one visitor. The campground offers sites with significant separation, particularly for tent campers.

Campground-specific beaches: Raccoon Creek State Park Campground provides water access directly for campers. One reviewer comments, "It's a great place to take the dog out to swim and chase geese and ducks. A great little beach area to lay out and enjoy the sun." This offers alternatives to often crowded public swimming areas.

Spacious RV setups: Many cabin rental locations also accommodate larger vehicles. A camper at Ryerson Station notes, "There are brand new bathrooms and a shower house, water hook-ups, big sites that are mostly shaded. They reduced the numbers of sites from around 50 to 35," indicating a focus on providing adequate space rather than maximizing capacity.

    What you should know

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies dramatically between cabin locations. At Austin Lake, a reviewer warns, "No phone service at all, no matter the carrier." Similarly, at Ryerson Station, a camper reports, "There is NO Verizon service at the campground. We walked up to the amphitheater and were able to get out a few texts but no looking at the radar."

Additional fees for activities: Budget considerations extend beyond cabin rental rates. At Austin Lake, one camper cautions, "Kayaking, inflatables, beach, but almost anything you want to do will cost you an additional charge. Need to use the bathhouse? Better take quarters...bc the showers are coin operated."

Road access challenges: Many cabins near Wheeling sit in steep terrain. One visitor to Zion Retreat & RV Park advises, "Make sure you have a good tow vehicle as there is a steep hill at the entrance/exit of the campground." Similar challenges exist at other locations, where narrow, winding roads complicate access.

    Tips for camping with families

Dog-friendly options: Pet policies for cabin rentals vary significantly. A Salt Fork visitor highlights an unexpected amenity: "Dog park!! and right on the lake!! Found this by mistake on our way out, and the dogs loved it. Access to lake, a beach, well fenced."

Bathroom proximity considerations: When booking cabins with children, bathroom location matters. One Washington-Pittsburgh KOA visitor recalls: "We got the last RV spot right next to the bathroom. We had people walk through our site on shortcuts to the bathroom in the middle of the night."

Off-season advantages: For families seeking quieter experiences, timing matters. A camper at Tomlinson Run observed: "Comfy camping! Nice simple, small campground sites are for everyone, RV to tent, older bathhouses but clean. Swimming pool and lake for fishing and boating!"

    Tips from RVers

Terrain impacts on parking: Cabin areas with RV access present unique challenges. A Grand Vue Park visitor explains: "The tent areas are spread out and there isn't an actual road to each of the sites. I actually thought this was cool but not if it's raining and you have a small car."

Water supply access: Not all cabin sites provide direct water connections. At Tomlinson Run, a reviewer noted: "Have to go up to entrance as the water spouts are still shut off," highlighting the need to bring containers for water transport during certain seasons.

Electrical capacity variations: For cabins with electrical service, amperage matters. A Grand Vue visitor specifically mentions: "50amp, 30amp hookups at all sites," providing important information for RVers with higher power requirements who want to park near cabin accommodations.
