The sound of rushing water accompanies every moment at this riverside campground, where the North Fork Soqualmish River flows directly alongside approximately 15 of the 50 total sites. Campers consistently note the proximity to water as the defining feature, with some able to fish directly from their campsite. The forested setting provides natural canopies over fire pits, which proves helpful during the frequent drizzle that characterizes the region.
Sites 2 through 6 claim the coveted waterfront positions, though competition runs high during peak season. "FCFS campground, so if you want to land a highly coveted creek-side site, start your hunt around 11am for campers to check out," advises Carolyn P.. The main loop offers more spacious sites along the river, while the inner loop provides tighter quarters better suited for groups camping together. Most sites maintain good separation, creating privacy despite the campground's popularity.
Access requires commitment. The final five miles follow a gravel road with significant potholes that demand slow speeds, particularly after rain. Several campers report tire damage, making a spare essential. Cell service disappears entirely once you arrive. The road passes Lake Cushman, offering glimpses of old-growth forest before reaching the campground. Standard amenities include drinking water, flush toilets during summer months, and trash service, though winter operations scale back to vault toilets.
The location serves as a gateway to Olympic National Park trails, though dogs face restrictions on most park paths. Mount Ellinor and Mount Washington trailheads sit about 20 minutes away. Swimming holes dot the river both within the campground and a short walk downstream. Hoodsport, the nearest supply town, requires a 30-minute drive for groceries and gear. For more camping options in the broader region, explore campgrounds around Olympic National Park.
Reserve in advance during summer months, or arrive by 11 AM for first-come sites during shoulder seasons when availability increases significantly.
