    Cape Disappointment State Park

    Expensive

Unless you manage to get one of the nice spots, you’re essentially paying a premium to park on grass with no privacy. It’s a beautiful area: but pick your site wisely.

    Love this place!

There is so much to do here and every time I've been to Ft. Stevens, we just scratch the surface.  We were down here in August as the last stop on our family vacation and we discovered a whole section of the park we didn't know was there!  This time, it was just me and my kiddo.  We came down for a rally put on by a PNW based group of the brand trailer I own.  The majority of the group was in loops O and N, though there were some of us (myself included) in other parts of the campground.  I ended up in loop M, which has full hook-ups so that was nice.  This was my first rally and it was my first big solo trip with just me and my kiddo.  The sites in loop M do seem sort of close together depending on where you are in the loop.  There are also a lot of trees, which could contribute to that feeling.  My back-in site, M04, was partially secluded with a row of shrubs between M04 and M05 and some shrubs and trees behind me.  I could see the road and the yurt village from my back window.  There is also a paved trail that goes along side the road.  If you go down into loop O, there is little trail that takes you over to the south parking area of Coffenbury Lake where you can pick up the 2 mile dirt trail around the lake.  FYI...no matter how fancy your fancy all terrain running stroller might be, it won't work on this trail.  Never fear though, there are plenty of paved bike trails that will get you throughout the park!  The only reason I am giving 4 starts instead of 5 is because I have a toddler that likes playgrounds.  The only playground is in the north campground.  It wasn't a long walk, but there were no paved trails which put us in the bike lane of the main road going into and out of the campground.  When it is busy, there are a lot of big vehicles going in and out.  It would have been nice to have a playground in the south campground or have a continuation of the paved path next to the road.  Verizon phone service is meh.  I had no issues calling or texting my husband, anything else was spotty as I had one or two bars.  While I don't go camping to scroll about on the internet, I do have a toddler that has a much earlier bedtime than me so it's nice to be able to catch up on social media or put in some earbuds and watch a movie on my phone or watch youtube.  Couldn't do any of that.

Management Was Very Particular - Borderline Discriminatory Behavior

We were treated in a discriminatory manner by the upper management. We felt extremely let down by how they behaved, since the main office worker, Jackie, had been very nice & professional.

Miranda, on the other hand,.. I do not recommend doing business with her. She looked down her nose at our RV, even though it is in great shape, only requiring a couple of easy updates that we had already explained how we were planning on dates to accomplish said updates.

Especially since, as you peruse the park, you see Multiple campers in violation of posted park rules, and much older & crummier looking RVs than we own, in much worse disrepair. Also, when Miranda called to deny us the spot, she began our phone call in a deceitful way, in fact lining me up to level the blow of rejection. Miranda is not kind at all, and treated my husband & I unfairly. We do Not recommend staying here.

Convenient, big, but you can also get away

I hadn't been here for years. I forgot how massive this place is...and how nice it is! We got a last minute reservation and ended up with a great site. It's a HUGE set of campgrounds, but it never felt crowded. And you can drive out on the beach and get away too. We sat for a few hours and had maybe 1 car per hour drive by. We were on loop H, which was good and bad. The bathrooms were horrible and needed torn down, but the next loop over was close and had great bathrooms and showers. Also, H didn't have a playground, so it was a little quieter with the kids. Or maybe it was just because we were camping after Labor Day and there were fewer kids in general.

    Twin Harbors State Park

    Meh

The layout of this campground packs sites too close together. It feels more like tailgating in a parking lot than camping. Other than that, this park is pretty great. It's a very short walk to the beach and a stone's throw from Westport. It's even got some decent trails for hiking around a bit. The bathrooms are pretty standard fare for state Park bathrooms, however, the free showers were a great plus.

    So many activities

This was our last stop on vacation. We couldn't get into Fort Stevens SP right across the street because it was full so we thought we'd give the KOA a try. We normally avoid KOAs, but this one was NICE! We had a premium gravel back-in site. The premium means full hook-ups, fire pit with some bench seating, picnic table, and a propane grill. Our row happened to back up to some trees and tent sites that were in a kind of gully below us. The first night, we had neighbors on either side of us, the second night nobody showed up. We were thankful for that as these sites are pretty close together. This is by far, the largest campground I've ever stayed at. There was a whole fun zone that had mini golf and a bouncy mat thing, outdoor pool and other things that we didn't even see because it was in another part of the campground. Our main purpose on this vacation was to visit Fort Stevens State Park and go into Astoria for lunch. I did manage to get in a quick swim in the indoor pool (you read that right--there are 2 pools). For such an active campground, I was pleasantly surprised at how everyone settled down by the start of quiet hours at 10pm, at least in our part of the campground. I wish we could have stayed longer to take advantage of some of the amenities, but it just wasn't in the cards this time.

Edit to add...we never managed to connect to the wifi.

Wrong RV location review above me

This is not Curlew Lake in Eastern Wa. This is Ilwaco near the Columbia River in the SW corner of Wa. We came to this campground by the lovely pictures of a large lake, nice camping sites etc. The Pro's: easy check-in Walking distance to the town and Marina. Close to Cape Disappointment State Park There is a laundromat. Cons: this is a fisherman's park. The sites are close together. No picnic tables at our sites. $59 is too expensive. Bad advise from the previous reviewer!!!

    It's fine, but expensive

Campgrounds nearby were closed, so had to come here. Price for all sites was $72 after tax in 2024. Has electric and water, limited wifi in campground. Took site 31. Sites were close together but luckily no neighbors for us. Lake is nice, Lake Crescent is much better if you're looking for a pretty lake to swim. Big Sitka spruce nearby. 31 sites total. Some cabins and whatnot available. Expensive camp store exists.

    So many mosquitos

Ferocious number of mosquitos that were persistent despite repellant. It’s bizarre they chose to put the campsites near the “lake” and swampy areas versus closer to beach access away from those areas.

Camp sites were also a little too packed tight versus other nearby state parks like Nehalem Bay.

    Nice campground with beach access

The location is perfect, with an easy walk to the beach, making it ideal for those who love the ocean.

The campground offers a variety of amenities, including a pool and hot tub, which are perfect for relaxing after a day of activities. For pet owners, there's a convenient dog park where dogs can run and play.

The RV sites nice, but not very spacious. It is super nice that full hook-ups are standard. Tent sites are also available and offer a comfortable camping experience.

    Bug Spray and Racoons

The wildlife is prolific, so no standing garbage collection can accept at the Corner Store. Which has fair prices and ice. I would ask for a camp site on high ground to distance the camp from the Mosquito breeding grounds.

    not again.. till fall/winter

the "hike in" camp sites are located between the trash compactor and recycling cans and the parking lot of the ranger station that leaves lights on all night.. so the trees are blown out by the light and it's nearly impossible to see the stars through the trees, and the trash compactor likes to go off randomly at 5:00 a.m.. athe sites are very small and close together. the other major problem is the squirrels in the campground and the previous campers that left piles of scrap for them to snack on. the first thing I see upon arriving at our campsite is a squirrel coming out of a neighboring tent that it chewed a hole through carrying a bag of graham crackers. (yes, do not leave food in your tent..) I chase the squirrel away multiple times to have the same squirrel come back over and over again.. I'm pretty sure that the same squirrel was the one that I witnessed climbing up into other people's tents and trying to steal food the entire time.

this is also a large campground with a lot of people and their children and dogs.. screaming children and barking dogs.. and that started at sunrise.

the campground and park are beautiful and I will try again in the off season..

    Great for kids!

This KOA was very nice. They have a variety of sites to choose from. Sites are small-ish, but they weren't full during our stay so we had plenty of space. Each site has a picnic table and a fire pit. They have plenty of kid-friendly activities, including playgrounds, a jumping pillow, horseshoe pits, 2 pools (indoor and outdoor), a rec room w/ air hockey, pool, indoor basketball and ping pong. We were there on a weekend, so they had bingo and a movie night during our stay. The rec room has plenty of activities to occupy the kids when it's raining (which it does here a lot). Internet was slow, and they have a lot of activities that are an additional fee. Overall, we had a good experience at this campground.

    Very noisy and cramped

The site itself is pretty straightforward, with the addition of nice covered areas at the rent sites (not sure if this is at all of them or just some). Unfortunately it was extremely hard to get rest at this location. The golf carts used to make rounds at all KOAs were nonstop, and moving fast enough to be disruptive. I didn’t expect late September on the Oregon coast to be so busy, but along with the carts there were people driving in and out of the campground at all hours of the night. The staff asked how my stay was and when I mentioned the heavy traffic their tone was defensive and slightly rude. I wasn’t complaining, just answering their inquiry honestly, and thought I would be met with a bit of understanding for my frustration. It’s a great location and I will give it another chance, but my first experience was not positive.

    Great location and endless amenities

We’re here during a non peak time but still active - spring break. The indoor pool is delightful the outdoor pool is closed the store/gift shop is extensive but closes earlier in the evening, the premium sites are gravel and not gigantic but there’s hardly anyone here. So it’s lovely. We used our campsite grill and had a delicious dinner, explored all of the kid activity zones and swam in the pool. The bathrooms are plentiful and clean, the amenities solid and themed. The staff kind and friendly. A really lovely destination KOA.

Well laid out with access to old military batteries.

Sites are mostly in shaded wood areas but since hookups are available solar needs shouldn't be a concern.  Most sites offer good privacy.  Hiking opportunities as well as to local historical military battery (big gun installation). They guns are gone at this site, but there is one on display a short drive away.

We had an awesome 2 night stay in site 103B. This site fit our needs well and was about 50 steps from Benson Beach. About 2.5 miles long and a jetty at the end. Light house , lots of trails! Just beautiful. We did not have WiFi or Verizon cell at this site.( not a problem)!

    Great Family Campground

There's not much to add to all of the other reviews except that we were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed being here for a few days.  We happened to get one of just a couple remaining sites mid-week in late June.  The park was full.  And yet there are so many places to explore and relax that we never felt too crowded.   This was our second trip out with our 8 year old grandson.  We didn't lack for activity, for sure!

We checked it all out!  The batteries, the Peter Iredale, the lake and the Jetty.  The only thing we might have enjoyed having were our bikes.  However with a dog, walking is better.

    Cape Disappointment State Park

Great Costal Campground with Nice Sites & Lots of Amenities

This is one of our favorite campsites to visit year-round. If you can get a spot during the warmer summer months, yay! If not, we've still enjoyed it during the more "off-season", both February and October :).

All their spots are great, it just depends on what you're looking for. They have full hookups, partial hookups, and dry spots - FYI the dry spots are the ones with closest access to the beach.

    Amenities:

    • Nice bathrooms w/ showers
    • Free shower facilities
    • Beach access
    • Fishing (if you want to take a drive down to the jetty)
    • Full Hookups
    • Partial Hookups
    • Local store (status of whether it's open or not is unsure)
    • Two lighthouses & multiple hiking trails
    • Within driving distance of Longbeach if you're up for some tourist activities!

    Cape Disappointment State Park

This State Park Campground Did Not Disappoint

Once we got near Ilwaco, we followed the state park signs to the campground(CG). Check-in was quick, but the camp host checking us in noted we were an hour early, so our campsite may not be cleaned and someone could be in the site. When we got to back-in site A57 with FHUs, there was no one there, and the campsite had been cleaned. As the loops at this state park are in a circle, the sites are easy to line up for a straight back in. Our asphalt site was level with the water and electric in the middle of the pad and the sewer at the back. We needed about 20 feet of sewer hose. The sites are decently spaced and for the most part, shaded by mature trees. We were able to get a usable Starlink north shot out of the back of the site. Satellite could be iffy depending on the site. Sites towards the front of the loop probably have the best chance for satellite as they are near the road. Water pressure was good at about 55 psi. We sometimes got 1 bar on Verizon, but to make a phone call, we had to drive to Ilwaco. We noticed that camping at the beach for Thanksgiving is a“thing” in this area, as the CG was full. There were deer milling around the CG and they did not seem concerned that we were there. We enjoyed walking our pups on the dog-friendly beach. The lighthouses were enjoyable as well, especially the views. A few amenities are nearby in Long Beach, but for the most part, you’ll need to drive about 30 minutes into Astoria/Warrenton, OR. A walk along Long Beach’s boardwalk was worthwhile, especially the whale display with an actual whale skeleton.
