RV campgrounds around Quilcene, Washington provide access to Hood Canal and Olympic Peninsula attractions. Located in a rain shadow region, Quilcene typically receives less precipitation than surrounding areas, averaging 25-30 inches annually. Nearby campgrounds operate seasonally, with limited winter availability outside year-round facilities in Port Ludlow and Sequim.
What to do
Boating access: Elwha Dam RV Park offers proximity to water recreation within walking distance. "There are lots of different options from tent sites to cabin rentals. Owners were very welcoming and accommodating. They have a veggie garden to share, lots of outdoor activity areas and places to explore within walking distance. It's a great base camp for exploring the peninsula."
Hiking trails: Multiple trails within 10 miles of Quilcene lead into Olympic National Forest. Lake Pleasant RV Park provides easy trail access. "Around the perimeter of the park are short hiking trails through the trees — somewhat steep gravel trails that give you an added level of workout over laps around the park. If you're looking for some extra miles, the walk/run to the Samammish River trail and/or Burke Gilman trail is less than 2 miles down the road."
Shellfish gathering: Beaches near Quilcene are known for shellfish. "If you like oysters and clams, this place is perfect. It's not fancy, tent sites don't have privacy between them. However, we had a blast here. Great weekend away. Family friendly."
What campers like
Privacy options: Port Ludlow RV Park offers secluded sites within wooded settings. "Simple campground with no real Amenities but the setting is fantastic with a lay out that lets you feel like you've got your privacy in the woods."
Waterfront views: Many sites include water views of either Hood Canal or Puget Sound. "This is a nice setting for an RV park. It's part of the Port Ludlow development, which includes a golf course, a marina, and shops. It's set in the woods, so there's lots of privacy. The best thing is that if you have kayaks or a boat you can launch and explore some beautiful sections of Puget Sound."
Convenience to amenities: Cove RV Park & Country Store provides on-site supplies. "Nice location for hiking or boating in the Hood Canal area, a great store, and fantastic and friendly management made this a very pleasant stay!" Another camper noted, "The park is small but not crowded and had all the hook ups needed for our first camping trip!"
What you should know
Cell service variations: Signal strength differs dramatically between campgrounds and even sites within the same park. "I'm getting 120+ mbs download on AT&T in my site right now, but several sites down from me, it can dwindle down to 5mbs!"
Hookup limitations: Many parks restrict electrical service to 30-amp. "Knocking another star as the majority of the sites are only 30 amp with antiquated posts. There are a few 50 amp sites but from what I saw they were all taken by RVers that are there on a more permanent basis."
Seasonal operations: Gilgal Oasis RV Park operates year-round with level sites for larger rigs. "A very small RV resort but very clean, helpful management on site but closely parked together. Full 50amp hookup. Close to Olympic National Park (Go early)."
Tips for camping with families
Recreation facilities: Campgrounds with play areas work best for younger children. "The pool, miniature golf, playground and basketball were great. Laundry facilities came in handy. Only downfall was no sewer and honeybucket needed to be reserved at $25.00; however, there is an RV dump onsite."
Weather preparation: Olympic Peninsula weather can shift rapidly, requiring layered clothing even in summer. "We stayed here last summer and loved exploring the area. A week just wasn't enough, we want to return and spend 2 weeks exploring and relaxing."
Beach exploration: Schedule activities around tidal changes for optimal beach experiences. "Nice spot, tight next to neighbors, laundry, guests must check in at desk. Beautiful area."
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Point Hudson Marina & RV Park offers premium waterfront locations but requires advance planning. "The RV park is next to the beach with nice full hookup pull through sites. I would stay here again."
Low clearance challenges: Many campgrounds feature low-hanging branches that can damage taller RVs. "There are both back-in and pull-through sites with concrete pads, fire rings, and picnic tables. Some tight turns and low-hanging trees but our 32' fifth wheel managed just fine."
Park amenities: Check each RV park for specific offerings like laundry, propane, and shower facilities. "This is a beautiful spot to stay in Washington. It's quiet, there is a garden of wood carvings, a small basketball area, and a community garden. We have loved our stay here and plan to return at a later date."
