Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Coulee City, WA

Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park and Blue Lake Resort accommodate pets with designated camping areas for dogs throughout their facilities. Both campgrounds offer tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin options where pets are welcome. Blue Lake Resort features a dedicated dog park area that provides ample space for pets to exercise off-leash, while maintaining leash requirements in common areas. The sites at Laurent's Sun Village Resort charge a $25 nightly pet fee that isn't always communicated at booking time, resulting in unexpected charges for some campers. Smokiam RV Resort maintains a large pet area near the store and pool, creating convenient access for pet owners needing to exercise their animals.

Trail Lake Dispersed camping provides free, primitive camping options where pets can explore undeveloped shorelines. Dogs particularly enjoy the water access at many Coulee City area campgrounds, with several locations offering sandy beaches or gradual entry points ideal for pets who like to swim. Campers should note that while pets are allowed at most sites, some swimming areas and beaches specifically prohibit dogs, requiring owners to find alternative water access points. The wind can be particularly strong in this region, making secure tethering essential when pets are outside. Martha Lake requires a Washington Discover Pass and allows stays up to three days, providing wide-open spaces where dogs can enjoy shoreline walks away from crowded campgrounds. Wildlife becomes significantly more active around midnight at some primitive sites, requiring extra vigilance with pets during nighttime hours.

Jones Bay Campground — Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area

PLEASE NOTE: This campground is still closed for COVID until June 1

We made several phone inquiries and then finally visited May 15-17 weekend. Met a ranger at the closed gate to Jones and he explained that they are inexplicably remaining closed THROUGH Memorial Day weekend. This is the opposite of the recorded message, so save yourself the disappointment.

Open are Steamboat State Park and Soap Lake State Parks. Also, a park north of Coulee City is open as is the resoerts at southern end of Banks Lake.

There is little to no cell service in and near Jones Bay, but there is some at the State Park south of it.

    Blue Lake Resort

    Cute and Nice People

The spots were solid dirt and our site was on top of the one next to us. It would have been better suited for a smaller rig (we were in a thirty foot trailer). The lake was actually a pond and was so scummy I wouldn’t let our kids swim in it. The dog park was a nice touch and lots of fun sitting areas and outdoor games. Right next to the road. Hosts were accommodating and so nice. Turtles in the pond were super cute! The wine bar was a nice touch. Showers kept flooding the bathroom but they were clean. Laundry was expensive.

Spring Canyon Campground — Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area

Great campground right on the lake

We came here to enjoy the lake.  The campground was right on the lake shore with a great sand beach!

They sites are pretty close together but were usable.  The site we had was a back-in site, the site is gravel and pretty level.  There are no hookups at this location.  First time boon docking, so we were not sure what to expect. This allowed us to test out our travel trailer and it passed.

We have Verizon and there were no issues with cell service for us.

The campground has a clean restroom, we used our trailer shower.

Pets are allowed and with how the lakeshore was, we were able to walk around a bend and get away from others allowing us to go off-leash so our dog could play in the water freely.

    Laurent’s Sun Village Resort

Second time was not the charm

I was so excited to visit the campground again, but when I showed up I heard the words “we have new ownership” uh oh… the park was still the same with amazing water access, great boat launch area and lots of cabins for those not wanting to commit to a full camper set up. The newest verbiage that they do no encourage pets any more, and the $25 a night pet fee was a little unsettling. Also this was not communicated and we got hit with almost $100 in pet fees when we checked out. Night two resulted in the power to 20% of the campsites going out and would not be fixed. 100 degrees with no A/C was a great way to clear a section of the campground. Overall a good trip, but my rating went down to 3 stars because of the new pet policy. If you don’t have pets then it is a great place to stay. For us we love Blue Lake itself, but will be moving to another resort on the lake.

    Martha Lake Dispersed Camping

    Wide Open Space

Martha Lake was a pleasant surprise. We stayed overnight on the 4th of July in our Sprinter van to give our dogs a break from the fireworks. Although there were some fireworks nearby, they didn’t bother the dogs at all.

Martha Lake requires a Discovery Pass, and you're allowed to stay for up to three days. There were three other car campers the night we stayed, but we were spaced out enough that I could only see one other vehicle in the distance.

There’s a bathroom near the entrance, but we never had to use it since we had our own onboard. Fishing is allowed, and we camped right next to the lake.

Hands down, I’d camp here again if I’m in the area.

    Lincoln Rock State Park Campground

Surrounded by water and Columbia Gorge rock

This beautiful campground has everything you want and need: water, trails, scenic views, ample campsites, clean bathrooms and easy access.

The campground is just outside Wenatchee so you are close to many amenities and only a half hour or so from the lovely Bavarian town of Leavenworth nestled in the Cascade Mountains.

The Apple capital of Washington, this is the fruit basket of the Pacific Northwest. Go in late summer or early fall to stock up on wonderful fruit or take in a wine tasting.

At the campground there are boat launches for kayaking or motorboats and jet skis, with miles of water to explore. And fishing galore!

Search out the park’s namesake Abe Lincoln, found outlined in the craggy mountain rocks. One of the premier campgrounds of Washington.

    Daroga State Park Campground

Nice campground but the wind can sure howl

Typical state park for Washington. Clean and beautiful. A portion of the sights are walk in only, however they do provide wheel barrows to help pack in your gear. Walk is roughly a quarter mile on a paved trail. Great to ride your bikes to the cam ground. Group sites are also nice with large areas to congregate. Only draw back is the wind. It can sure make for a tough set up of camp. Sites do have a small wind break. See behind the tent in picture.

Guide to Coulee City

Camping in the Coulee City area sits within the Columbia Basin, a region shaped by massive Ice Age floods that carved dramatic rock formations and created Banks Lake at 1,570 feet elevation. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F from June through August, while spring and fall bring moderate temperatures ideal for camping. Winter camping is available at some sites but requires preparation for temperatures that can drop below freezing.

What to do

Hiking at Steamboat Rock: Access trails directly from Bay Loop Campground that lead to panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As one camper notes, "I recently kayaked to a boat in campsite with my friend and made camp on a sandy beach beneath the boat," showing how hiking can be combined with water activities at Steamboat Rock State Park.

Fishing opportunities: Jameson Lake offers excellent trout fishing during fishing season. According to a visitor, "Great fishing spot, has split season and is only open during fishing season... Lots of trout, caught limit every time. Witnessed someone pull a 18" trout last visit." The lake is known for consistent catches, making it popular with anglers.

Swimming in lakes: Blue Lake provides swimming options in warmer months. One camper mentioned, "The lake is so refreshing! It's super hot there and I could spend all day swimming in the lake," describing Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park. Many sites offer beach access for cooling off during hot summer days.

What campers like

Waterfront access: Campers appreciate sites close to shorelines. At Blue Lake Resort, visitors enjoy "great walking, can get out onto calm rides on water, get some fresh water swimming, catch good fish," according to one review. Many campgrounds offer direct water access for boats and swimming.

Wildlife viewing: Seasonal wildlife activity provides natural entertainment. One camper at Bay Loop Campground reports, "We spent Thanksgiving weekend camping this year. The campground was partially open but very empty... We hung out, hiked, fished, and enjoyed the deer, pheasant and wild turkeys wandering the grounds." Wildlife sightings are common at dawn and dusk.

Stargazing opportunities: The region's clear skies and limited light pollution create ideal conditions for night sky viewing. A visitor to Jameson Lake noted it was "Very beautiful night, great for star gazing," highlighting one of the benefits of this remote camping location.

What you should know

Wind conditions: Strong winds are common and can affect tent camping. A camper at Trail Lake Dispersed advises, "When we first arrived, it was pretty breezy. As soon as it died down the welcoming community came out in full effect," referring to insects that appear when winds calm. Properly staking tents and securing items is essential.

Insect activity: Mosquitoes can be problematic, especially near water in summer. "Beautiful spot, but literally the most mosquitos I've ever seen (and I used to work in the woods of northern Maine)," reports one Trail Lake camper who had to abandon their campsite. Bug repellent is a necessity during warmer months.

Site differences: Campground quality varies significantly across the area. At Laurent's Sun Village Resort, a visitor notes, "The newest verbiage that they do not encourage pets any more, and the $25 a night pet fee was a little unsettling. Also this was not communicated and we got hit with almost $100 in pet fees when we checked out." Always confirm pet policies and fees before booking.

Tips for camping with families

Activity options: Smokiam RV Resort offers various family-friendly amenities. "Very clean campground. Nice amenities for families. Put put golf swimming pool hot tubs basketball and volleyball court and nice playground. Paddle board kayak and paddle boat rentals as well," reports one visitor, highlighting activities that keep children entertained.

Beach selections: Choose sites with gradual-entry beaches for safer swimming. One camper at Coulee City Community Park mentioned, "We walked over to a nice sandy beach and kids walked aways into water before it got deep. The beach was nice and sandy." Sandy beaches provide better footing for children.

Weather preparation: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F, requiring sun protection and hydration plans. "It would probably be too hot for us during the summer," notes a Bay Loop camper who visited in October instead. Spring and fall offer more moderate temperatures for family camping.

Tips from RVers

Hookup reliability: Check electrical connections carefully before setup. One camper at Coulee Lodge Resort mentioned, "The 30 amp plug I plugged into was kind of sketchy. The terminals were melted pretty bad." Inspect connections before connecting expensive equipment.

Site selection: RV campers should consider wind exposure when choosing sites. "Stay in the outer ring if you have an RV," advises a Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park visitor, suggesting that certain areas offer better protection from the elements. Corner sites often provide more privacy and less foot traffic.

Dump station availability: Not all campgrounds offer dump stations. A Blue Lake Resort visitor noted, "There's a boat ramp and and rental boats and small store. If you get a beach front campsite you can beach your boat at your site... We had power and water. There's a free dump station." Confirming waste disposal options prevents inconvenient trips.
