Republic, Washington sits at an elevation of 2,569 feet in the Okanogan Highlands, characterized by pine forests and multiple freshwater lakes. Summer temperatures can reach above 90°F during the day, while nights cool significantly, even in peak season. Winter camping is available at select locations like Gold Mountain RV Park, though most campgrounds operate seasonally from May through September.
What to do
Wildlife viewing opportunities: At Bonaparte Lake Campground, visitors can spot diverse wildlife including ospreys and loons. "The lake had a pretty significant bloom of algae and a lot of mill weed at this time, but it was still a great visit. We saw many birds drawn to the marsh and trees, several kinds of fish, turtles, and nutria in the water," reports one camper.
Hiking at Sherman Pass: Located near several dog friendly campgrounds near Republic, the Sherman Pass area offers hiking trails with mountain views. "A great place if you're looking for a quick overnight stop with easy highway access. Water from a hand pump well and vault toilets available. Also a nice ADA trail at site," notes a visitor to Sherman Pass Overlook Campground.
Lake activities without motor noise: Swan Lake Campground prohibits motorized boats, creating a serene environment. "Great campground with easy access to the woods and a beautiful lake with views and fishing. Paved road, clean drinking water, vaulted toilets, locking dumpsters for trash, no motorized boats allowed," writes Shawna P.
What campers like
Stargazing opportunities: Night skies at Republic-area pet-friendly campgrounds offer excellent visibility. "The nightly call of the loons sing you to sleep as they howl to one another. The trout are in abundance but are some what if a challenge to keep hooked. Camp site are flat. Huge fire pits. And the night sky like you only see in movies!!" reports a camper at Swan Lake.
Clean facilities: Curlew Lake State Park Campground maintains well-kept grounds. "Nice, well kept state park on the southeast shore of the lake. Garbages emptied and bathrooms cleaned regularly," notes Jamie C., highlighting maintenance standards that benefit campers with pets.
Wildlife viewing from camp: Several sites offer direct wildlife observation. "We had a clear view of an Osprey nest that the hillside trails goes right by. In addition to the Ospreys we saw many birds drawn to the marsh and trees, several kinds of fish, turtles, and nutria in the water," reports a visitor to Curlew Lake.
What you should know
Cell service limitations: Coverage varies significantly at Republic Washington dog-friendly camping areas. "Zero reliable cell service in the park. Had to drive back towards Republic to make a call," reports Jamie C. about Curlew Lake State Park.
Loop layout affects experience: At Curlew Lake, campground design creates distinct experiences. "This is a big campground on a big lake, but the three loops help to create three different experiences. We camped in #79, one of seven tent sites on the somewhat isolated lower loop."
Seasonal availability: Most campgrounds operate on limited schedules. Snow Peak Cabin offers winter access for adventurous campers. "Ski touring into the Snow Peak Cabin in the winter/spring has become an annual tradition for me and my friends. The cabin is cozy and well stocked with cots, chairs, pots and pans, firewood, and solar lights!"
Tips for camping with families
Swimming areas: Some locations have designated swimming spots, though conditions vary. "The designated swimming area had a lot of geese poo so we opted to find other areas to swim," notes a Curlew Lake visitor, important information for families with children.
Group site availability: Swan Lake Kitchen offers dedicated group facilities. "Sweet group site with outdoor woodfired stove/fireplace under shelter with picnic tables. Includes two freshwater sources and a private beach with swim dock as well as plenty of camping room for the whole crew," explains Kate N.
Supply access: Republic has grocery options for pet and family needs. "Decent-sized IGA for groceries, convenience stores, and a few restaurants in Republic nearby," notes a Curlew Lake camper, useful for families needing last-minute supplies or meals.
Tips from RVers
Hookup options: Gold Mountain RV Park provides full amenities for RVs. "There are 21 sites available, each with full hook-ups. Check out the Ti-Pi's too!" reports Ashley F.
Site selection considerations: Not all sites accommodate larger rigs. "Most spots can fit trailers but some more private than other spots. Turn around loop is tight but doable with full size Dodge and 32' trailer," explains Teresa H. about Sherman Pass Campground.
Loop variations for privacy: At Curlew Lake, site privacy differs dramatically by loop. "The middle loop is on top of hill that has a wooded slope on the lakeside. There are two distinct areas here, one is literally a loop of sites on grass in classic WA State Parks fashion. The other section is series of 10 or so sites on the hillside and in the woods."
