    Very Nice

This is the first time we have camped at this Thousand Trails RV Resort and we were pleasantly surprised. Beautiful campground that is well maintained. This campground is very family oriented and offers an abundance of activities for children and adults alike. It is also pet friendly and offers a dog park for your furry friends. We will definitely be back!!

The Colonies RV and Travel Park

Nice small campground surrounded by water.

Lovely small campground located inside a National Park land. Full hookup sites are named after the original 13 colonies. Nicely situated between Williamsburg, Hampton, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Tent sites, group accommodations, store, firewood, pavilion for rent and typical rv resort activities including corn hole, pickle ball......

    Thousand Trails Williamsburg

    Thousand Trails

I’m not sure if this is typical of Thousand Trails/Encore or not. The location is wonderful, as far as it’s close to interstate 64 providing access to Williamsburg, Richmond and Virginia Beach. Getting to the actual “resort” is difficult, hard to find and small roads. The sites are close, many are not level, not very big rig friendly and satellite is near impossible due to trees. It is unfortunate that it feels too residential, more trailer park feel. On the up side, the staff is friendly and try to accommodate as best possible. Activities abound including game room, indoor & outdoor pools, corn hole, basketball, beautiful putt putt course and adult/child activities. Suggest calling over online booking.

    American Heritage RV Park

    RV Camping

It was a nice clean campground but is definitely an RV resort. We stayed in a cabin that had two bunks and a full size bed, with a bathroom, microwave and small dorm size fridge. The pool was relaxing but the park set up reminded me of a typical American trailer park. Not my cup of tea but it was nice.

This is a nice park. My first time with Thousand Trails and it’s odd that you pick your spot once you get there. They were trying online check in but it didn’t work. Very clean quiet at night. This is a huge campground and lots to see and do.

    American Heritage RV Park

Good location with lots to do within an hour's drive

Usually when we go out with our trailer, the campground is basically the "destination." In this case, the campground was a place to park our "mobile motel room" so we could explore the area and do a day trip to the beach.

This was our first time staying where full hookups were standard, and we had a pull-through site on a level concrete pad. A picnic table was provided, and a metal "fire pit" will be delivered to your site if requested.

There was decent space between the sites, though of course not like what you find at a state park! But speaking of which, American Heritage RV Park is just 4 miles from York River State Park. After getting set up, we went there and we highly recommend it for nature lovers.

The campground is also close to Colonial Williamsburg, and a little over an hour away (depending on traffic) from Virginia Beach and First Landing State Park.

The bathrooms were clean, showers had hot water, and the campground was very quiet. A train comes through the area a couple of times a day (and night), but we didn't find that to be a problem.

It's close to I-64 (easy on/off) and easy to find, though the actual road INTO the campground is pretty narrow.

We chose to stay here instead of one of the campgrounds in VA Beach just because traffic in and around VA Beach is crazy. Seriously. I felt much better about just driving there with my car instead of towing the trailer through that mess.

We didn't check out the pool, but it seemed nice and we saw people swimming. Some folks we met said they'd been at the campground a week.

Be sure to ask about AARP, Good Sam, AAA, or other memberships you have because they'll give a 10% discount when you check in. We had good cell service on AT&T and Sprint networks.

While it was the most expensive place we've stayed so far, compared to an oceanfront motel room at VA Beach during peak season, it was a very good deal. We'll probably stay here again in the future.

More about this trip (and all we did in 2 days!!) is on my blog:

    Cozy and Welcoming

Every member of staff is very friendly and welcoming. It is a serene campground with beautiful walking trails. All the amenities for our two toddlers too… big pool outside, plus an inside pool and hottub. Also, a park, put-put + arcade room! Free popcorn, coffee and accessible microwave everyday! We recommend this park connected to the Thousand Trails membership.

    Excellent Bargain

    Season: year round

    Reservations: 757-878-2610 or 2565

    Pets: Leashed

    Sites: 9 $20.00 with w/e/s

    Cabins: 5 $75.00 daily

Picnic table, grill, playground, bowling, paintball, tennis, propane, water, electric, trash, laundry, showers, fishing

It was as if they have two sections in the campground. One section seems to have long term and then the section where the 9 sites are is nice and open with many mature trees. There is nice separation between sites. I loved the area but I am a country girl at heart. Nice to be in the heart of the military. BTW"GREAT" Military Transportation Museum. The commissary is fantastic, didn't go to the PX.

    Long term stay

We didn't stay in the "front" part of the campground (with all the weekenders), we stayed in the "long term" stay campsites waaaayyyy in the back. We were there 2-3 months.

Weekends definitely get busy. Staff is helpful. Boat ramp access, FHU, pool and plenty of room to stretch your legs. Sites up front are a little crammed together, but level. Not a bad place to stay.

    Needs Some Overdue TLC

    PROS

Perfect campground to explore the Historical Triangle

Campground along Virginia Capital Bike Trail, which was an excellent riding trail

    Site#335 level side-to-side

    Sandy gravel site

    Moveable plastic wood picnic table

    Shady site

    CONS

Overused James City County Park…definitely needs some TLC applied

Check-in clerk very curt and extremely non-customer service oriented

Never saw a camp host site or the actual camp host

Weirdly laid out full hook up campground. Some sites are 20 ft long

Sites are extremely close to each other

Had to park tow vehicle next to trailer due to short length of site 335

Tight roadway thru full hook up campground

    Dirt roadways = dusty

    Empty campsites were heavily littered

    No privacy from neighbor sites

Extremely low water pressure even when campground is not fully occupied

    Nice park in Gloucester

Great park! Much better than last year. It’s mite relaxes and you can actually rest and enjoy nature. They have New management. Employees are great; servicial and respectful. Quiet hours are being respected now. Lots of annual sites; they’re scattered around the park for the most part. 50/30 amp full hook ups. Large tent area with electric and water if you want to be in groups.

    Cheap but run down

The website tells a much different story than the camp itself. Mostly long term here and they don’t do a great job of making sure the sites aren’t full of junk. Can tell it used to be pretty nice but seems very run down now. A storm hit right after I got here and now I’m sitting in about 8 inches of water! Good for a night if you just need a stop over, but can’t say I’d like to be here any longer than that.

    Newport News Park

    Loop D

This campground is pretty nice, especially if you’re in an RV. No full hook ups, but there are many level spots and it makes it easy to go to the dump station that’s on site. There’s no swimming and the rental bikes are terrible, but the park itself is nice to walk and there are really lovely trails as well. The bathroom was horrendous and you cant use the potty unless you’re willing to straddle the toilet to shit the door. Nice camp store and the boat rentals are nice. It was sad to see no one picked up sites (many had trash left everywhere) and it was very frustrating to see people climbing all over the protected sites. Calling to let the rangers know did nothing. Overall nice, but extended stays may not be much fun for tweens/ teens.

    Williamsburg and Tidewater Gem

This park was very convenient to Williamsburg, Richmond, and Virginia Beach. The staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The bathrooms were clean, air conditioned, and well supplied. We found it ideal as a base camp to explore the tidewater area of Virginia. Sites were concrete, level, and most had trees for shade. New section at rear of park is not well shaded but new construction. Good connections for water cable and sewer. Wi-Fi was available and we had no problems connecting. Easy access to all the tidewater areas and close to restaurants, food stores, and shopping. Staff were exceptional and this has become a family favorite. We love the area and staff have shared with us the local options and places of the beaten path. Reservations are recommended and available on line. One of the top RV parks in the Tidewater area.

    Anvil Campground

Sandwiched in on all sides! And the noise!!

This is a 4 acre parking lot with a good number and quality of very small amenities (pool, dog park) with 60 “sites” sandwiched between roads and very active train tracks. It is NOT a campground.

Owners for several generations have built out the space well but never should have started. Then they’ve been totally dishonest in their marketing of a litany of amenities listed and pictured but skipping the road running the length of the narrow property on one side, with active train tracks and highway along other side. Meanwhile, you are packed in here such that you don’t put out your awning or any exterior items and weave your way through the next RV’s bump out, utility pedestal and septic hook up to get in your door.

With AC on, windows and shades closed, we can hear neighbor AC, TV, loud/long trains, cars on road and highway day and night. Train is so close that it shakes our RV.

Good level ground with gravel and some trees, but ridiculous to call this a campground and pay $60 for lower end “sites” on a weekday. Goes up from there. They have a liberal cancellation policy after first night when you see how bad it is. But if you have area plans, finding & reserving someplace else, moving etc. is a HUGE interruption. Or they could just be honest in their advertising & cut way down on sites smooshed together.

We expressed dissatisfaction and ultimately got 10% additional off beyond our 10% Good Sam Membership. It should have been much more. But don’t accept less, or better yet, don’t come in the first place. Unbelievable that this lot, not campground, is virtually full.

This is an amazing recreational campground for military families and retirees that is located right on the York River between Williamsburg and Yorktown. It is immediately adjacent to the Colonial Parkway for easy access to historic Jamestown as well, making for a great base for exploring the historic sites and state and national parks of the area. There are several Navy Bases in the area, so this is an easy retreat for active duty folks, but also open to uniformed service personnel or retirees and families from all over the country.

The campground is multi-faceted. There is everything for everyone—camper cabins (some dog friendly and some handicapped accessible) as well as an RV park with hookups as needed, and also standard tent sites as well as primitive tent cents. The various camping areas surround a central recreational area that includes golf course, playground and swimming pool, but there are also wooded hiking trails, two lakes with rowboats and kayaks and fishing, as well as shoreline and piers on the York River itself. The RV campground has a nice central bath house with showers snd toilets as well as laundry facilities. There is a small convenience store as well as a cafe if needed, but you are so close to Williamsburg and its myriad cafes and shops that you have amazing options! We have stayed here several times now, in fall and spring, and it was a great home base for exploring the whole “historic triangle

    Little Creek MWR RV Park

    Utilitarian

Overall, this campground is utilitarian at best. We stayed for five nights in April in a 25' Airstream. It is on a military installation so you need to have access.

    - RV office does not open; if you have any issue, you have to call the reservation line or see the camp host...but there was nothing to mark who the camp host was and they never stopped by.

    - Roads are decrepit with major potholes and in need of repair. The roads and some sites flood when raining. There are two one way roads in, but without a map of the campground available, you don't know which one to turn down in advance.

    - Bathrooms are dated but clean.

    - Dumpster not emptied in timely fashion. It was overflowing the first two days here and people were piling trash around it until it was emptied on a Wed.

    - Full hook up (electric/water/sewer) on sites; some have fire pits, some don't. Also the connection boxes are set back pretty far on the sites, so you need longer hoses/cords. We had a long electric cord that reached and had to add a second water hose and second section of sewer hose to connect. Water pressure was good.

    - Concrete pads and free laundry were nice. Ground around the concrete pads were rutted where folks either parked off the pad or didn't know how to park on it.

    - Free wifi if you sign up for MWR's, but we used our T-Mobile home internet with good connection (4 bars). AT&T on our phones was 1 bar at best.

    - Several small hiking trails nearby on base that were good for walking the dog.

    - Traffic getting off base starting around 1500-1600 is bad, so plan accordingly.

    - Expect to hear aircraft all the time. You get used to it quickly, but can be loud.

    - Seemed like some active duty personnel were staying here, as we saw them leaving in the mornings and coming back at the end of the day in uniform.

    - We didn't find firewood for sale on base and bought some out in town near another campground.

    - Follow the signs on base to the golf course and keep driving past the driving range to find a small beach on base.

Not the best look for a military campground, but if you just need a place to park to access the other amenities of the base and area cheaply, this is it.

    Chickahominy Riverfront Park

Riverfront Park, boat ramp and camping.

Its a nice park right on the river, sites are a little close but not bad with mostly full hookups. Easy access to bike trail that runs from Richmond to williamsburg, passing many plantations and farms, forrest, etc along the way. The bike path runs seperate from the roads, but is blacktoped for easy riding. They also have canoe, kayak rentals, a nice pool in summer, beautiful views off the bluff of the river as well as a trailered boat launch.
