Cabin camping options dot the forests and lakeshores near South Londonderry, Vermont. At elevations ranging from 700 to 2,000 feet, the region experiences crisp autumn nights that make insulated shelters particularly valuable from September through October. Water access cabins fill quickly during summer months when daytime temperatures typically reach 75-85°F.
What to do
River swimming access: The intersection of the Winhall and West Rivers at Winhall Brook Camping Area creates natural swimming spots. "We spent the week in the river exploring and relaxing. They had just had a series of rainstorms before we arrived so the river was able to be tubed down for a couple days," notes camper Mike C.
Pond fishing: Echo Lake at Camp Plymouth State Park Campground offers fishing opportunities and crystal clear water for swimming. "This Park has a huge beach and picnic area with a snack bar and boat rentals. We made a day of it and enjoyed the whole shebang!" reports reviewer M.A.D. P.
Hiking access: Trails connect directly from some camping areas to major routes. "The AT runs directly through this park. While on a 4 state section hike I traveled by foot through this park," explains Sarah K. about the Appalachian Trail access at Gifford Woods.
What campers like
Waterfront sites: Riverside cabin options provide background sounds and recreation. "The river is a constant lovely background sound and is wonderful to swim or just play in. Walk into town for the paper or fresh baked goods," says Melissa R. about Winhall Brook Camping Area.
Old-growth forests: Some cabins sit among mature trees. "The campground at Gifford Woods State Park is a hiker's campground for sure. The sites are large, private, and wooded," notes Tara S. about Gifford Woods State Park Campground.
Ice cream access: On-site treats provide convenience at certain locations. "They have an ice cream shop attached to their office/store, mini golf just outside of it too," explains Sammii D. about amenities at Hidden Acres.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Some cabins near South Londonderry have connectivity challenges. "Only downside for us was bad phone signal and everything seemed far away, like Walmart was an hour away!" warns Jennifer D. about Dorset RV Park.
Dump station locations: Most basic cabins lack plumbing, requiring use of central facilities. "They do have some walk up sites that can't be reserved ahead. The place books up early in the year for weekend visits so we went on weekdays," advises Gail P.
Bathroom quality varies: Facility conditions differ significantly between locations. "Bathrooms are super clean. Staff is friendly. Seasoned firewood available for purchase ($6 a stack)," reports Emil about facilities at Gifford Woods State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Some cabins offer proximity to play areas for children. "Great place to have a picnic and to enjoy the crystal clear water. The campground also has buildings to rent for large gatherings," explains M.A.D. P. about Kampfires.
Noise levels: Cabin proximity affects the sound environment. "If you're looking for a quiet spot maybe don't look here. If you have kids and don't mind them making friends and roaming the campground then this is great!" advises J L. about Woodford State Park.
Wildlife viewing: Animal sightings add educational value. "What a wonderful campground. Even though it is off season, there are several units throughout but dispersed so no one was right next to us. The site was somewhat level with a gravel base. SURPRISE- when I went to hook up the water, a pile of fresh bear scat was right there!" reports Ralph L.
Tips from RVers
Road access limitations: Some cabin areas have restrictions affecting arrival. "Follow the website directions to get here as there are covered bridges in the area with low Clearance and low weight limits," advises John L. about Ashuelot River Campground.
Limited hookup availability: Cabins near utility connections are limited. "Few sites have hookups so bring your solar and pick a sunny site. They do have some walk up sites that can't be reserved ahead," notes Gail P.
Campground layouts: The arrangement of cabins affects privacy and convenience. "The campground is well kept but the spaces are very open and visible and some are mowed lawns. A little odd- might be good for the less outdoorsy types," observes Erin T.
