Remote, decent views

Pretty remote. Lots of traffic. Found a site that people with a Prius wouldn’t be able to get to.

Super buggy in June. No cell service. But, plenty of privacy and solitude.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is dispersed camping allowed in Green Mountain National Forest?

Dispersed camping is allowed along Forest Road 50 (FR50) in Green Mountain National Forest. This area offers remote camping opportunities with sites located off the main forest road. Some sites require high-clearance vehicles to access, as noted by the existence of spots that standard passenger cars like a Prius cannot reach. The forest features multiple pull-offs and established primitive sites where visitors can camp. For the most current information on specific areas open for dispersed camping, contact the Green Mountain National Forest ranger district office.

Do I need a permit for dispersed camping in Green Mountain National Forest?

No permit is required for standard dispersed camping along FR50 in Green Mountain National Forest. This free dispersed camping opportunity allows visitors to stay up to 14 days without formal registration. However, be aware that the area has no cell service, so planning ahead is important. For large groups (typically 75+ people) or special activities, a special use permit might be required. While no permit is needed for regular camping, always check with the Forest Service before your trip as regulations may change seasonally, especially during fire restrictions or wildlife management periods.

What are the rules and regulations for dispersed camping in Green Mountain National Forest?

When dispersed camping at Green Mountain National Forest FR50, you must camp at least 200 feet from water sources, trails, and roads. Practice Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash. Campsites should be at least 1/4 mile from developed recreation areas. Camping is typically limited to 14 days within a 30-day period. Campfires are permitted but use established fire rings when available and ensure fires are completely extinguished before leaving. The area experiences heavy insect activity, particularly in June, so proper preparation is essential. Privacy and solitude are available despite some traffic on the main forest road.
